Can there be any greater challenge to London’s Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke?—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1813By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister—the lovely and almost-on-the-shelf—Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth—it’s all an elaborate ruse to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as … mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.
But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her . . . but somehow Daphne is falling for the dashing duke . . . for real! And now she must do the impossible and convince the handsome rogue that their clever little scheme deserves a slight alteration, and that nothing makes quite as much sense as falling in love.

Having watched the Netflix series first, reading the Duke and I was a delight! The attempt at conception, which is pretty nonconsensual on Simon’s part in the tv series, is actually even more shocking in the book! However, Daphne and Simon’s following conversations negotiating the decision are much more satisfactory in the book, compared to the …
I found this a very enjoyable read, with lots of humorous banter and endearing characters. I have not seen the Netflix version, and as I do not have a Netflix subscription do not intend to. I always find that I prefer the original book to a production anyway.
Simon Arthur Henry Fitzranulpn Basset, Earl Clyvedon was the sixth child to be conceived …
Like everyone else, I was swept in by the tv series Bridgerton, and so I went and bought the first book. I didn’t read it until after the show, but I still loved it! I have also bought the second book in the series, we’ll see if I get around to reading it before the second season comes out.
First one day read in months! Quick and fun and pretty close to the show, I enjoyed getting lost in this one!
In Regency London, it’s the start of a new season. For Daphne, Bridgerton is the second season. She is everyone’s friend, but no guy finds her desirable. (At least that what she is convinced, I think is more of 3 older brother issues. :)). One night, she runs into Simon, the new Duke of Hastings and the most eligible bachelor in London. They form …
I absolutely loved this book!! Simon was charismatic, but reclusive. It made you want to get into his character and find out what had happened in his life that he was trying to protect himself from. Daphne was a strong female character who didn’t want to be told what to do, by ANYONE – not her brother, not her husband, not ANYONE. Which was …
I know I am very late to getting on the Bridgerton band wagon, but better late than not at all, right?!! I first heard about the Bridgerton’s via the Netflix series, and was reluctant to start because it couldn’t live up to the hype, surely…. but of course it did. I binge watched those eight episodes in an embarrassing short amount of time. So …
While I was aware of the show before starting this series, and I fully admit to that being the reason for picking it up, I have not seen even one episode of the TV Show. All of my thoughts on this book are without bias from the adaptation. I would also like to add that I listened to this book on audio and I definitely feel that the narration …
I enjoyed The Duke and I. I believe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it before watching the Netflix show. I actually like the show better than the book. They are both very similar but I like the extra character involvement with the show. I am sure I will see more from the other characters in future books. I love Daphne’s brothers. …
If you like the Netflix series, the books are 10x better. You get an inside viewpoint of both characters with more details and insight into the other main characters of the rest of the series.
This is a wonderful start to the Bridgerton series. Of course, I watched the first season and knew I wanted to read all the books. This story features the Bridgerton’s fourth child but eldest daughter, Daphne and Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings.
This is Daphne’s second season with no desirable prospects for a husband. Simon has recently returned …
This was the first book featured in my Spill the Tea with Dee, Book Chat. We had so much fun reading The Duke and I, watching the Netflix version and then spilling on it all.
Julia Quinn brought together a wonderful cast of characters.
So, this is not the first Julia Quinn book I’ve read. I actually started with her prequel to the Bridgerton Series called Because of Miss Bridgerton in the Rokesby Series, but I decided to finally read The Duke and I when I found out that it was becoming a Netflix series. I love Julia Quinn’s romance novels even if they get a little uncomfortable …
This series got me really curious for quite some time but it was after the news about becoming a tv show that I finally decided to read the books.
Historical romance was something I loved when I was younger but I kind of forget about them for some time. I’m so happy I decided to came back with this series!
I really enjoyed the story and the …
Loved this book and the characters. Couldn’t put it down!
I loved it! Couldn’t put it down.
The Duke and I is the first book to Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series. The first book focuses on Daphne, the fourth of eight siblings in the Bridgerton family, and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset. Readers will also meet the other Bridgertons’ and other secondary characters that I liked getting to know more than the main characters at times in …
I’m a sucker for a good historical romance, and Julia Quinn is a master at creating them. Of course, I will have to have more of this Bridgerton series on my e reader.
I so enjoyed this book! I came to it after watching the Netflix series and I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series. It’s a fun read and I love how much extra stuff she added in the back. I enjoyed reading about the author’s background and how she ended up using the narrative voice to convey information and her relationship with her dad. …
Oh Simon and Daphne. I have loved these two since I first read their story 15 years ago. But now that Bridgerton is a hit on Netflix I decided to reread The Duke and I and I still love it. Loved how Simon overcame his sad childhood and I loved how Daphne was able to make him realize that being happy is the best revenge of all. These two were so …
