Can there be any greater challenge to London’s Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke?—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1813By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister—the lovely and almost-on-the-shelf—Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth—it’s all an elaborate ruse to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as … mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.
But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her . . . but somehow Daphne is falling for the dashing duke . . . for real! And now she must do the impossible and convince the handsome rogue that their clever little scheme deserves a slight alteration, and that nothing makes quite as much sense as falling in love.

Witty banter and ballgowns? Yes please! Julia Quinn has been my gateway to Regency romance, and the Bridgerton series is a perfect comfort-binge. I love the sassy heroines, and swoon-worthy heroes. I just read that Shonda Rhimes is developing the series as a TV show for Netflix, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it!
No one writes a reliable comfort-read like Julia Quinn–always tender, romantic, snapping with wit and populated with characters you would love to know. Start with the first in series to fall in love with the sprawling Bridgerton clan (and JQ’s writing). This is my favorite of the series as well–I <3 Simon!
Oh, how the Bridgertons have my heart — and always will! I’ve always been a fan of Historical Romances, and Julia Quinn is the queen of them all. Start off the series here with book 1, and don’t be surprised if you end up reading them a dozen more times. Utterly delightful, fun, and engaging romances!Julia Quinn The Duke & I
I don’t even know why I’ve had this just sitting in my Apple Books for so long–unread. Well, I finally fixed that! I have been devouring this series. I love the Bridgertons so much. It’s witty, smart, and the dialogue is a dream to get lost in. Daphne and Simon were effortless to read and I’ve loved every second of it.
This is the start of a great series. Once you read one, you’ll have to read the rest.
Fantastic story, with humor and romance throughout. Another Julia Quinn hit
You must read this entire series! You will be happy that you did.

loved this one too
Absolutely loved it and I’m so glad it’s now a series for TV.
I love historical romances and The Duke and I is no exception. I love the build up of Daphne and Simon’s relationship. Their banter is so funny and witty. My favorite part are the Lady Whistledown letters though. I love that they’re at the beginning of every chapter. I can’t wait to keep reading the rest of the series!
Loved this story! The Netflix series deviated quite a bit from the book – but it too was very enjoyable. Highly recommend both.
Much better than the movie. I didn’t care for it as much as some other books in the series. I was horrified at the choice of actors in the movie. The characters in the book were very lively, and the book was entertaining as the characters seemed to grow. The story was better in the book as it focused more on the main characters. I loved …
First off, I won’t lie I bought this book because I saw it was out on Netflix and wanted to read the novels first. I did watch a couple shows but let me tell you the book is way better. Daphne is the 4 child of the Bridgestone and is in her second year of presenting for a husband. She comes from a loving supportive family her father has passed and …
Just enjoy reading any Julia Quinn story it is always amusing, entertaining and a page turner you will always continue reading until the end, and then go in search of her next book.
Oh how I loved this book! This has been the very 1st time that I’ve watched the screen adaptation of a book before reading it and I am NOT disappointed in any way. While Shonda Rhimes added her sass, the original was delightful and quite hilarious throughout.
Read it, read it!
Loved this book!!! I should have read it before watching the series but I couldn’t help myself lol. I love these characters and can’t wait to continue with the Bridgerton bunch!
Wow! I can’t believe I waited all these years to read this one, but it definitely was worth the wait and couldn’t have been at a better time in my life. I needed the pick me up of Ms. Quinn’s Bridgertons series now more than ever.
Simon and Daphne are a delightful pair and like all of Quinn’s heroes and heroines you fall madly in love with them …
Simon is one sure of him self complicated man. Daphne is one compassionate caring woman. They have amazing chemistry. Love that Simon was so sure he would never marry and would never have a family. He sure changed his way of thinking after meeting the beautiful Daphne. Can’t wait to read more.
Like some people, I read this book after watching the first season of the Netflix series Bridgerton. Since I don’t read much historical romance, I expected The Duke and I to be rather stodgy without all the Hollywood glam, but I became easily addicted to this story that is filled with humor and warmth.
Daphne’s delightful dry wit and kind …
I had sworn off Regency romances, but I loved the Netflix series, then my daughter recommended these so – finished it in 1 day, went on to read the second. Witty realistic dialogue was the key to my reading enjoyment. I’ll continue the series when I have time.
