Harry Bosch has been given three years before he must retire from the LAPD, and he wants cases more fiercely than ever. In one morning, he gets two.
DNA from a 1989 rape and murder matches a 29-year-old convicted rapist. Was he an eight-year-old killer or has something gone terribly wrong in the new Regional Crime Lab? The latter possibility could compromise all of the lab’s DNA cases currently … currently in court.
Then Bosch and his partner are called to a death scene fraught with internal politics. Councilman Irvin Irving’s son jumped or was pushed from a window at the Chateau Marmont. Irving, Bosch’s longtime nemesis, has demanded that Harry handle the investigation.
Relentlessly pursuing both cases, Bosch makes two chilling discoveries: a killer operating unknown in the city for as many as three decades, and a political conspiracy that goes back into the dark history of the police department.

Detective Harry Bosch’s mandatory retirement is on the distant horizon, three years away-but he’s feeling increased pressure to close cases. He grabs two, one a cold case and the other a current murder . . . possibly, one more sinister than the next. Add to all that the involvement of Irvin Irving and you’ve got a real page turner.
This series is a bit hit & miss for me (I’ve not read them all), but this one was a massive hit. The story was quite complex with two cases going on at the same time, political shenanigans and Bosch’s private life but I didn’t at any time feel confused or distracted. The various strands were merged together seamlessly, never slowing the pace. …
I have been reading Harry Bosch novels since Connelly started, and, I’ve really enjoyed them. Connelly writes great police procedurals and manages to keep the pace up while providing the details necessary to satisfy the readers who demand details, details, details. That’s not an easy thing to do.
For more years than I care to count, he has kept …
Connelly got two stories going in this book. Yet, the reader never feels confused. If you want to read a very good police procedural this is it! You’ll learn exactly what it’s like in a cop’s world. Not an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but still a good book.
I simply enjoy this author’s books.
He is an excellent writer. Very entertaining.
Michael Connolly and Harry Bosch are an unbeatable combo.
I snap up Connolly’s work as fast as he can write it.
Main character was believable and antagonist was a wonderful foe.
I’m late to the Bosch series and started in the middle, but heck, it doesn’t matter, they are brilliantly written
Always on the look out for a Bosch book and this one did not disappoint. Plenty of twists and turns that you don’t see coming.
Yet another 5 star book by Michael Connelly.

Connelly never disappoints
Great character
Love every he had wrtten. Wonderful characters that stay with you long after you finish.
The Bosch novels are police action at it’s most authentic. You have officers who have a less than perfect home life partly because the job takes priority with it’s relentless round the clock schedule. You want to know how large departments are organized and operate read this. Jerry Weber
Any Michael Connelly book is well worth reading. Heronymous Bosch is one of the best characters I’ve ever followed.
