New York Times bestselling author Diane Chamberlain delivers a thrilling, mind-bending novel about one mother’s journey to save her child. When Carly Sears, a young woman widowed by the Vietnam war, receives the news that her unborn baby girl has a heart defect, she is devastated. It is 1970, and she is told that nothing can be done to help her child. But her brother-in-law, a physicist with a … brother-in-law, a physicist with a mysterious past, tells her that perhaps there is a way to save her baby. What he suggests is something that will shatter every preconceived notion that Carly has. Something that will require a kind of strength and courage she never knew existed. Something that will mean an unimaginable leap of faith on Carly’s part.
And all for the love of her unborn child.

A genre-bending emotional journey from a writer who gets to the heart of things. I’m a longtime fan of DC. This might be her most ambitious book to date–a desperate woman, a mysterious man, and a supernatural journey of hope and healing.
I’m a huge Diane Chamberlain fan, and this might be my favorite of her books. It’s a little different, but still classic Diane Chamberlain. I loved the story, the writing, the characters, the sense of time and place, and the fabulous twist toward the end. THE DREAM DAUGHTER is a unique and powerful read. I can’t recommend it enough.
I love the way Diane Chamberlain took a chance on a book she clearly loved writing. The chance paid off beautifully.
I was told not to read the back cover and just dive in, and that’s what I did. The book did not disappoint. Chamberlain is a fantastic stroryteller, and I was drawn into these character’s lives–all the joy and all the heartache.
This remarkable and unexpected tale by an author I’ve enjoyed over the years is a surprising storyline for her and so very well done! The characters are so engaging that I’m still thinking about them long after I reached the last page, and Ms. Chamberlain deserves big kudos for taking this probably scary risk and pulling it off like the gifted writer she is!
The Dream Daughter by author Diane Chamberlain is AMAZING! It is a different type of time travel story which is filled with emotional events and scenes. Caroline Sears, Carly, has a secret she did not share with her husband Joe before he left for Vietnam in 1969. She thought she might be expecting a baby, but did not want to tell him until she knew for sure. But a few months later Joe is with a group of engineers which are listed as being killed in November. Now she is consulting with a specialist because a new procedure has shown her baby has a heart defect. The prognosis is dire and in 1970 there is no fetal surgery to intervene for unborn babies. Or maybe there is a solution to this tragic situation? Carly’s brother-in-law, Hunter, has an idea of how Carly may be able to save the life of her baby girl, travel forward in time to 2001! Now how to convince her that he is not insane and had traveled from 2018 to 1965?
I thought about this story for hours after I finished reading the book. It broke my heart in some scenes. I was very young during the Vietnam War era, but I remember my folks watching the news at night and how sad my mom and aunts would be as the stories and toll of casualties would be in the evening news.
The Dream Daughter is about believing the impossible and having the hope to try and make a miracle happen. The story is about having the faith and trust in others to accept the possibilities to try to do the impossible.
It is a wonderful story about the love a mother has for her child. It is about loving someone enough to let them go and to separate yourself no matter how much it hurts! Very beautifully written!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Ever since I read the Time Traveler’s Wife I’ve been a fan of time traveling books. Diane Chamberlain gives the sub-genre a fabulous twist in The Dream Daughter and ends up with a story that satisfies on many levels. I loved it!
The Dream Daughter takes the reader on a mind-bending, gut-wrenching ride filled with laughter, tears, and astonishing insights. A glorious, gorgeous novel. Read it!
“…the love of a mother could make a hero out of an everyday woman.”
I literally can’t say anything about this book’s plot without spoiling the entire reading experience. I went into this book blind and am so glad I did because I was perfectly captivated and I could not put it down. Just know that it is something you wouldn’t normally expect from Diane Chamberlain but it showcases her talent and reminds her readers that she still has some incredible story ideas up her sleeve. It’s beautiful, desperate, heartbreaking, surprising, and full of palpable emotions. It’s about motherhood and all the things you’ll do for your child. It’s about taking giant leaps of faith and knowing when to let go. I loved this book. Check it out.
Carly Sears learns that her husband was killed in Vietnam, then she learns that Joe’s unborn baby, still inside her, has a serious heart disease and will die soon after she’s born. But Carly’s brother-in-law, a brilliant mathematician and scientist, has a plan that MIGHT save her child, except it sounds unbelievable. Still, Carly decides to risk it to save her baby daughter. And then, the carefully laid plans her brother-in-law put in place for her, go wrong. I was never sure what was going to happen next in this story, and that kept me reading. That, and the characters were so well done. I don’t read literary novels often, but this one was a winner.
I couldn’t put this book down!
I tried reading this when it came out but never could get past the first few chapters. Every time I went to the library the cover kept pulling me towards it saying open me and read. Finally the other day I succumbed to the call and brought it home. I fell instantly in love with Carly’s story and hated to stop to be an adult and take care of my family.
Personally, I don’t believe in the time travel theory and that there are portals all around us but as I was reading The Dream Daughter I found myself thinking what if you could? Would you be brave enough to do as Carly did to save your child?
I highly recommend The Dream Daughter.
One of my favorite all-time books. A must-read this fall. Original and engaging with twists and turns that will keep you reading until the last page. For fans of The Time Traveler’s Wife.
Chamberlain writes with supernatural gifts…fate, destiny, chance and hope combine for a heady and breathless wonder of a read.
I am not normally a fan of time travel novels or movies or tv, so after a few chapters in and I saw where this was going I thought, oh no. But I had to read it as I love Diane Chamberlains books. So glad I did. It takes a few twists and turns least expected and ends quite differently than I would have expected. Great characters especially the main characters Carly and Hunter. Travel to New York and the NC Outer Banks in the 70s and 2000/s.
Even though thinking too much about the intricacies of time travel, if it were possible, makes my head hurt, I found that I simply could not put this book down. Faced with an extremely difficult decision, Carly puts her faith and her trust into believing the impossible simply for a chance at saving her unborn child. Diane Chamberlain has written an incredible novel of fiction that portrays the lengths a mother will go to for her child. And while there is an element of time travel, it does not read like science fiction. Perhaps this is because Carly’s future is in line with our present day that makes it more familiar to readers? Whatever the reason, I truly enjoyed this book that proves that Chamberlain is a master storyteller that continues to surprise her readers no matter what direction her stories take.
I love Diane Chamberlain’s books and jumped at the chance to read her latest work. I went into it totally blind. Wow! The Dream Daughter was amazing! It was a completely different story than what I’ve come to expect from Ms. Chamberlain’s books and I loved it!
This book took me a bit to get into but I really enjoyed the whole story. I liked how it all worked together and how it managed to all come together. It was well worth the read and there were many feels that I felt that I was not expecting. I would recommend this book although there is some language involved.
I absolutely loved this book. It was hard to wrap my mind around time travel, but the story was so unique and crossed so many eras that I have been part of that I was really able to connect. Carly had so many hard choices to make and obstacles to overcome, without being able to tell anyone her predicament. I would not want to be in her shoes, but what an amazing and hard adventure.
This book was an enjoyable read from the start, but the last quarter of the book made it exceptional.
