They arrested me as a witch. And I’ve one night left to live. At least, I thought I did, until the nobleman turned up.He calls himself Meridas, and he thinks my magic will be of use. Also, he’s a dragon.A sky-cursing handsome dragon person, if I’m being honest here.I don’t like the idea of being used, but it’s not like I have a choice. Not unless I want to survive the next day. It helps that he … want to survive the next day. It helps that he lives in the floating cities, though.
I always wanted to get out of the slums. Maybe not quite in this manner… but a girl’s gotta take every opportunity presented, right?
It does help that he’s everything a girl looks for in a man. Kind. Attentive. Strong and determined to save his sister, and save me. Things I’m definitely not used to.
Things I wouldn’t mind exploring further, if I get the chance…

Well worth reading!
The first book in the Six Isles Witches and Dragon series a well written book that once I started reading I did not want to put the book down. I will be looking for the next book. This is a short quick book to read. Alex and dragon shifter Meridas is one I recommend. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Meridas watched his home die when he was nine years old. He and his little sister, Vash, watched the island topple out of the sky and fall. Their mother had stayed on the island, trying to find a cure for the Creeping Rot that attacked the core, trying to prevent this catastrophe. They thought they had more time.
Alex had been abandoned and was taken in and cared for by Mistress Sue. She took in all the abandoned babies and sick people and did what she could to help the helpless. Above them, the floating cities held the dragons who had wealth. Down below, they were poor and struggled. In her 24 years, she had never met a dragon, though she had seen small flying specks cross the skies between the Six Isles as she looked up. Now from her jail cell, she asked a guard when she would be killed, and he told her tomorrow at sunrise.
When she had found a dying kitten, she first sensed something within her. She saw what was wrong with the kitten, and sort of pushed something of herself into it. The kitten regained strength and she took it to its mother. She did it again when a dying baby was brought to Mistress Sue. The baby survived, as well as others after that. But the last person she had healed did not like magic and ran to the police to turn her in. She told them Alex had cursed her. Her only regret was that she didn’t get to say goodbye to the kindly Mistress Sue.
Her cell door scraping open woke Alex, and she saw an immaculately dressed man with a glowing orb standing there. He called her a dirty little thing and looked disgusted at her horrible clothes and filthy skin. But he told her all crimes are forgiven if she is taken above, assuming that she really is a witch. He took a knife and cut his hand, then demanded she heal it. She wasn’t sure if she could; she was weak now and had been inactive for weeks. But she washed her dirty hands and touched him, rewarded when she felt his pain and pushed that his vessels and skin heal. He was shocked that it was true and, without delay, told her they would leave now because he had need of her magic. She was indeed a healer, a rare life witch.
Meridas was eager to take the young witch to the hospital to see his sister, but the hospital would not allow visitors yet. The Six Isles did not have a healer witch and he had been unable to find one until now. He had to attend a meeting in the morning and could not wait until it was over.
Alex felt the wrongness of the disease as soon as she approached. It would only attack the magical, but it seemed to sense her presence and wanted to attack her. It was sucking the life out of the young woman. The disease did attack Alex as soon as she touched the woman, but Alex fought against it, pulled her hand away, and a green sticky mess came with it, left the woman, and withered to ashen black. Alex was exhausted and sweating and told them to never ask her to do that again – even though she realized that was exactly why she was here! Would this be her new future? Did Meridas have plans for her after this? Or would the Fates have something else in store for these two?
I thought this book was done well. It certainly brought up the stark separation of the rich and the poor, and the attitudes that seem to attach to those statuses. I enjoyed the strong characters and their loyalty to those they care about. Meridas was devoted to his sister. Alex was kind and caring for Mistress Sue and those she took in to help. I think this is going to turn into a very good series, so grab your copy and catch up on the story’s beginning!
What an absolutely exciting, magically filled world Lisa Daniels has given us. Filled with soul crushing poverty, eye widening opulence, dragons and witches of all kinds. This is the kind of story that fills the imagination with wonder while keeping the mind racing trying to figure out the mystery within the plot. I’ll be watching this series closely.
The first couple of times I read the title of this book, the words tripped me up because they didn’t seem to go together. Don’t pair dragon’s with life but rather life with witch. What is a life witch? In this creative world, a life witch is a witch who heals.
We first meet Alex, the heroine, in the slums of the Undercity, a dark and dirty world of society’s poor that live a miserable existence beneath the surface of the planet. She is in prison, due to be executed in the morning for witchcraft. A woman she healed, saving from certain death, turned her in to the authorities. During the night, a wealthy man from above the surface, living on one of the Sky Isles, comes to her cell. He’s looking for witches who heal. Witches are uncommon in general, as they are thrown in jail and killed when they are found out. The rarest type of witch is the life witch.
As soon as Meridas, the wealthy man who is actually a shifter dragon, discovers that she is indeed a healing witch, he immediately brings her to his home Isle floating above the surface of the planet. A disease called Creeping Rot attacks beings who have magic. Meridas’s sister has this and is on the verge of death. Alex can pull the disease from the young woman, and it disintegrates almost as soon as it hits the air.
Meridas takes Alex into his household as a servant, hoping she’ll be able to help with other healing issues. He sees to her education and makes sure she is well fed. He is determined to find out more about her background because healing witches are so rare.
What other oddities–medical and otherwise–will Alex face? Will her lineage be figured out? Will she and Meridas develop feelings for each other beyond servant and master?
The book had some of the common issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, but this did not distract the book.
The author has created an interesting world of Haves and Have Nots, of strange objects and disease, and of troubled pasts and uncertain futures. The different types of people and magical beings were fascinating to read about and watch interact. I know this is book one, so I will be interested to see how the rest of the series works out.
A different world. A Life Witch it sounds strange doesn’t it? I though so. They are very rare and can heal people. I like this story. It shows how less fortunate people can better themselves if they have the chance. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.

Alex is a life witch who was captured and put in prison. Meridas is a dragon shifter who needs a life witch to heal his sister. Together they a strong team. I really enjoyed this magical story and the world this author has created. This is a entertaining story filled with witches, healers, dragon shifters, magic and so much more. I look forward to reading the rest of the Six Isles Witches and Dragon series.
A pretty good book. A quick paced easy read. This magical tale provides some mystery, suspense and a bit of romance. I like the characters and plot. There is something devouring magic and Alex, a life witch healer, just may be the solution. With the support of Meridas, a dragon shifter, he will help her crack the case of the Creeping Rot. Alex grew up as an orphan ready to be executed for being a witch and now her people the Zamorkan’s are coming to stake their claim to her and her magical abilities. Meridas and Alex now must also deal with a Conclave of Zamorkan and their sinister plans to attack the Isles. This has been an interesting tale and I look forward to reading what happens next.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. The Dragon’s Life Witch by Lisa Daniels is the first book and an interesting introduction to the Six Isles Witches series. This is not your typical take on dragons, witches and magic. This quick read has a storyline that gives off a slight GOT/Avatar type vibe and quickly becomes addictive. There is an interesting twist to the story and I’m just dying to know if….. Also, I enjoyed the characters and can’t wait to see how they continue to evolve in the next book.
