Bestselling author Jim Kraus returns with a heartwarming tale about a dog who has people convinced he can talk. Wilson Steele is a single professor and Vietnam veteran who likes living alone, insisting it’s too late for him to have a family. His mother disagrees. When she impulsively adopts a rescued black lab mix, she insists Thurman is special, and has whispered of the coming of grandchildren. … grandchildren. Wilson brushes the notion off as fantasy. When his mother learns of her retirement community’s ‘no pets’ policy, she forces Wilson to take the lovable dog. Wilson notices Thurman’s growls do sound like words, but he knows he’s just projecting his own thoughts on the animal. If Wilson is talking to neighbors on their walks, and spending time with Emily, a widow with three children, it isn’t because Thurman encouraged him. After all, everyone knows dogs can’t talk…can they?

I love how Jim Krauss uses animals to “speak” truth to humans. It makes me look at our family dog and wonder what secrets he’s keeping.
Thurman was a wonderful dog…wish I had him. First book I’ve read by this author, but not the last. It was such an easy book to read…maybe a little slow the first chapter, but after that didn’t want to put down
I loved the characters and storyline of this book. I wish my dog would talk to me!
Wilson Steele is a professor who has led a very quiet and private life until his mother adopts a black lab mix named Thurman. She cannot keep Thurman in the senior living apartment where she lives. Even though Wilson knows dogs cannot talk he keeps thinking Thurman is growling words and his mother asks Wilson to take care of Thurman for her. Meanwhile Hazel who lives across the country sorts through her Mother’s things after she dies. Hazel comes across a picture of her mother with a man and our wedding is written on the back. Only Hazel never knew her mother was married. How Hazel and Wilson’s lives intersect is a beautiful story.
This is a great book about a Vietnam vet dealing with the past and the dog who saved him. It’s realistic in that vets have to deal with some really difficult memories. A really good read.
A wonderful down to earth story that is imagination but heart rindering.
I loved it. I Love stories about dogs and cats.
Loved this book, and would happily read more from this author. The way the dog and the man help each other is wonderful, and being a dog person, believable (or at least I hope for the kind of back and forth this book portrays – maybe we are all just too busy and jaded to see it like this.).
Was fun to imagine that this could happen. Flow was a little stilted but I stuck with it because I liked the characters.
Sweet story about the relationship between a dog and those who loved him. And this dog can talk!
What a wonderful, unexpected story this was. I expected a light, whimsical book, but I found a moving story of people deeply hurt by life who found healing with the help of Thurman, a very unusual dog. I learned a lot about the emotional damage of war and how that affects others after the war. I loved this book.
Loved this book!!! I could picture in my head Thurmond talking, dancing and doing all the crazy things he did. It was wonderful. Loved this dog.
Liked very much. Good, clean and easy to read.
I was very pleased with this book. I am now following the author.
I didn’t think Jim Kraus could outdo The Cat That God Sent, but The Dog That Whispered is right-on hilarious. I can’t wait to read The Dog That Talked to God. Kraus’s writing style is ingenious. The dog’s interpretations of human affairs is laugh-out-loud, but the book also has it’s serious side. Bravo, Jim Kraus!
I really enjoyed this book, even though when I got it I was not sure I would finish it because I have picked out books with a good intro and then after the first chapter I decided it wasn’t as good as I first thought.
