Hig somehow survived the flu pandemic that killed everyone he knows. Now his wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley. But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside … outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.

Finding a way to live with loss…
I seem to gravitate towards apocalyptic novels… But then “The Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jorden was also about the coming of the apocalypse…
“The Dog Star” is a first-person narrative from a point of view of a pilot about the years right after a flu epidemic that wiped away the life as we know it. The story …
I didn’t like this book at all. In fact, I couldn’t even finish it. It was a selection for my book club, which is the only reason I tried to read it.
Ever since reading The Road, a gray a thoroughly depressing image of the world, I have shied away from apocalyptic novels. I made a fortunate exception with this book. While it does not sugar-coat the ugly realities of a world without law and order, plentiful food and water, etc., it presents readers with lives that have substance, choices, and …
Maybe I’m a pessimist, but this is a realistic twist on the well-traveled post-apocalyptic novel. The characters are just the types you would imagine as survivors, but also engaging as humans. The story isn’t pretty, but it’s believable. I’m building a bunker!
This book is unbelievably beautiful and unbelievably sad. It is a dystopian novel that reminds you of what is important and beautiful in life while at the same time portraying scenes of horrible violence and gruesome death. You must read this book.
Very interesting; I couldn’t put it down. I would be interested in reading a sequel to see what happened to the other survivors scattered across the country.
Different sort of post apocalyptic novel. Have listened to it twice and will probably read it again.
The fact that I read a book more than once is the best recommendation I can make. The narrator didn’t detract from the story and managed to enhance it. The best of all possible environments for enjoyable listening.
Poetic writing but in the end just a somewhat better than average post Apolcoliptic novel.
Not your typical post-apocalyptic romp, this book is thoughtful and original in its approach to what has become a popular subject.
Something for everyone. West lovers. Dog lovers. Adventure lovers. Apocalyptic literature lovers. Fans of dystopian literature. People who enjoy reading novels with rounded, dynamic characters …
This book was at first hard to figure out. But you see that it was the end of the world and a survival manuel. A romance also and a happy ever after.
I love this genre. But, I couldn’t get into any of the characters and story line was a disappointment. I wasn’t even a fan of the way he told the setting, and I live in Colorado! I don’t need an easy read, or a happy ending. But this was just too disjointed, Eeyore, and unfulfilling.
I really enjoyed it. The main character was brave but also tender hearted.
What a treat!
Very meditative, with first person narrator struggling to find meaning in dystopian near future, but somehow neither depressing or sugar coated.
I am glad I read the book, not my normal read at all. Another version of the end of the world.
But I liked flowing the exploits of the 3 people that made it out alive.
I just couldn’t get on board with this. I don’t mind this type of writing style when it comes to short stories, but in novels it is too long and tedious for me to keep with the pace. If a writing style that isn’t grammatically correct and if you like a story where the point of view is super zoomed into the MC’s head, then you’ll enjoy this book. …
