As a midwife running her own home birth practice, Audrey Novak deals with pressure like a superhuman. Until, that is, she meets her handsome and arrogant neighbor, Dr. Ammon Parker. Ammon, who believes only in modern medicine, is just as unprepared for the infuriating—and inconveniently beautiful—midwife. When the two are repeatedly called to the same labor and delivery unit, their clashing … ideals and fiercely independent personalities threaten to derail both their professional goals and their pride.
Outside of work, Audrey is a passionate rock climber, tantalized by a secret route she’s heard about in an online forum. Her hunt for the climb’s location leads her to the intriguing BelayingonofHands, a man who claims to have set the route. Soon their anonymous virtual flirtation and witty exchanges deepen into a true connection. But when Audrey discovers the man from online is actually Ammon, she’s blindsided. It seems they have more in common than she could have imagined, but will their differences keep them from making the climb to true love together?

The Little Hospital Around the Corner!
I loved this modern adaptation of “The Shop Around the Corner”! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect even with the description. Audrey (whose last name is even Novak like Klara’s!) & Ammon are kind in the same field of work, so to speak, but not amicably after Ammon offends Audrey. And then Audrey offends Ammon. And they just can’t seem to help themselves. They were so at odds with each other that it was difficult to see how they could ever end up together!
But kudos to the author for keeping them from becoming unlikable even while they were being so annoying to each other. Happily, they each have an online friend they can vent to & share advice with, lol.
The development of their relationship from enemies to friends to more is believable, and the pacing of the story was perfect – I picked the book up, was drawn in right away, & didn’t put it down till I was finished – – with a very happy smile on my face that lasted the rest of my day! A very enjoyable read!
*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic
*Religion: LDS (Mormon), but only as background, nothing preachy
This was a really fun book by Sarah Alva. I really loved the “You’ve Got Mail” elements. I loved the main characters and how much they hated each other at the beginning. I loved how as they got to know each other they were able to find common ground and let go of some of their previous perceptions. I thought this was a great book and I really loved her ending to the story. This is a wonderful book that I would recommend to others.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this contemporary story. I would describe it as a modern version of You’ve Got Mail. Super cute, fun, and a great HEA!

This was a fun and engaging “you’ve got mail” romance! Ammon and Audrey are neighbors, co-workers, and as it would seem, enemies. Their work at the hospital has them frequently at odds with each other but they have more in common than they think.
Ammon and Audrey are very multi-dimensional characters. They were both vulnerable in their fears and self-doubts and thus relatable to the reader. Their story arcs included some serious self-reflection and commitment to change. I did not like either character much at the beginning but adored them both by the end and rooted for their happily ever after.
I loved the sparks and the repartee between the pair and I enjoyed several of the side characters. This book was just so much fun to read and I laughed and smiled through the last page. This was my first book by the author but it will certainly not be the last!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but it in no way affected my opinion.
I was so intrigued by the title the minute I first read it. Opposition first came to my mind, and that’s what’s in full abundance in this Contemporary Christian Romance: Opposites Attract…eventually! The main characters, Audrey the Midwife, and Ammon, the Doctor don’t have a terrific start as their beliefs differ in the perfect way for women to give birth. In fact, you could say they are “Frenemies” throughout much of the book. This fact alone makes this novel so much fun to read. You have two people that have such opposite views about childbirth, one is kind of arrogant and the other can be prideful. The sad part is that they both were hurting in their own ways. One thing after another happens that compounds their problems. Add in both of their rock climbing passions, an online forum where they sit anonymously behind their screens, and somehow they fall for each other; until the truth comes out.
I loved the paths that the characters went down that helped them become stronger people. In the end, Ammon learns to let go of his pride and arrogance, while Audrey learns to open her heart and trust again. There is a lot of witty dialogue, funny moments, and several heart-wrenching scenes that will make you cry: I mean, get the tissues ready!
This romance of highs and lows will entertain you and make you think. I learned to love the characters as they fell for each other. Clean Romance readers will want to buy this one and then tell their friends about it.
A midwife and an ob-gyn resident both wondering if their life is what they want.
Audrey is a certified nurse midwife that specializes in at home birth and believes that the less medical intervention in a delivery the better. Although, she also recognizes the essential piece modern medicine plays and is very willing to call on a doctor whenever she needs to consult someone else or encounters a problem with a mother-to-be. She tends to be very protective of her position and specialty, often appearing prickly and defensive. Audrey wonders if she will ever be a mother or if her career will need to be enough. Ammon is an ob-gyn resident who wishes mothers-to-be would just let him do his job and stop interjecting their preferences and thoughts. He feels a need to present a strong, assured presence and often appears egotistical and gruff. He wonders if he has chosen the wrong medical field to specialize in. He feels that something is lacking. Both have a love of rock climbing. They find themselves neighbors their apartment building as well as co-workers in labor and delivery at the hospital. As they butt heads over how to handle cases and that disagreement bleeds over into their private lives will they be able to find a way to work together and even get along? Will they be able to recognize the strengths the other brings to situations both professional and personal? A good read. Be aware the first part may seem to move a little slower as medical practices and ideas are introduced and explained in the story. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Funny, sweet, and romantic, The Doctor and the Midwife is everything I love about reading contemporary romance. Ms. Alva’s characters pulled me in from the first page and their love story held me captive until the very end. This is one book I will be recommending to all my friends!
Going from enemies to falling in love isn’t my favorite trope, particularly if the enemies are pretty mean to each other. It’s just not that fun to read about people constantly harping on each other; it has to be really well done to keep it from being too abrasive. This book didn’t start out so well for me; I felt like both Ammon and Audrey were too rude and I really wasn’t liking either of their characters. However, I kept reading and did end up liking both of them and the story. I thought the doctor and the midwife aspect was interesting and original. Overall, this is a fun, clean contemporary romance.
I read an ARC provided by the publisher via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
