Outgoing and sociable, Emily tries to befriend the doctor’s wife, but Alisha is strangely subdued, barely leaving the house, and terrified of answering the … subdued, barely leaving the house, and terrified of answering the phone.
When Emily goes missing a few weeks later, Ben is plunged into a panic. His wife has left him a note, but can she really have abandoned him for another man? Or has Emily’s curiosity about the couple next door led her straight into danger?
A gripping, sinister thriller with a twist you won’t see coming from the international bestseller Lisa Stone.

I was gripped immediately
Emily and Ben have moved next door to Dr. Burman and his wife, Alisha. Alisha never seems to leave the house .. she doesn’t talk on the phone. Her husband spends a lot of his time in a building out back that he keeps padlocked. What’s he hiding?
Their cat, Tibs, goes missing. Dr. Burman brings to Emily the cat’s collar … supposedly he found it in his yard.
And then Emily goes missing … leaving a note stating she was leaving Ben ..and their small son.. for another man. Really?
There is so much more to this story than the few lines above. There are secrets and lies and just plain evil involved. This was a fast read for me .. I just had to know what was coming next. It definitely will make you wonder who your neighbors really are.
The reader learns early on exactly what is happening, but that only whets the appetite to discover what comes next. It kept me gripped until the final unpredictable ending.
Many thanks to the author / Avon Books UK / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily. opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Absolutely brilliant book. Highly recommend to anyone!
I really enjoyed the story. The story built up well and kept me glued to the book. Could not wait to finish it and now hoping for a sequel.
For anyone who has ever wondered what the neighbors are up to, this is a fun read, assuming your idea of fun is watching things go very badly for a young mother trying to be a good neighbor. I enjoyed the way the author lays out the facts so we can see a pattern and figure things out before the characters can. But things don’t always go the way we expect, and that is fun too. The prose is conversational and the various elements of the story—dialogue, description, thought, action, backstory, etc.—are in good proportions. It’s an easy, enjoyable read.
Paging Dr. Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! Cuckoo? Line 1!
Something strange is going on in the home of Dr. Amit Burman and his sick, recluse wife, Alisha. They have top-notch security, CCTV and plastic film on their windows.
Dr. Burman has a very sick wife, a medical degree, a bad attitude, a secret shed and an unnatural interest in cryogenics. Hmmmm, I wonder what he’s up to?
Their neighbors, Ben and Emily, are curious about all of the secrecy. Emily, in particular, is relentless in her nosiness. She drops in on them even though she clearly isn’t wanted, spies and takes pictures and videos from her bedroom windows and barrages Alisha with personal questions.
When Emily goes missing a few weeks later the mystery really begins…
Just how sinister are Dr. Burman’s activities and how far was he willing to go to keep them secret from his pesky, nosy neighbor?
Great characters and unpredictable (to me) twists and turns. I loved it.
The Doctor by Lisa Stone
Creepy doctor next door his wife ill with disease, daughter noone knows about…. starts off creepy and goes from there. It draws you in slowly and keeps you asking if you really want to know your neighbors or are you better off minding your own business. Thank you Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this and leave my opinion.
A scary look at what is to come in science
I loved reading this book. So suspenseful Still thinking about it. This book is a 10!
Good God this was the scariest book I have ever read. Well done but it will be sometime before I can read one like this again.
Scared the neck out of me. Spine-tingling, but I loved it.
Started off a little slow, but then got very scary. Would make a good movie.
Hard to stop reading it at .
Its definitely the best so far by Lisa Stone. Its keeps you gripped to find out what happens next. A must read
This was definitely a different kind of thriller. This doctor was so delusional in his believes and the things he did where all kinds of crazy. I got goosebumps reading, but I just couldn’t put the book down. if you want to read something new and original, this is your book.
An intense, thrilling read with darkly disturbing elements and sinister undertones that compels the reader to read and read until the very end. It follows two sets of neighbours and their varying view points as the story unfolds, growing in intensity with every new chapter. Em has since the very first time she saw her neighbour going to and from his shed felt something off about him and has avividly watched a f documented his comings and goings. Reaching out to his wife at every opportunity trying to strike a friendship hoping to maybe learn more. That proves mote difficult than she expected and things are definitely more wrong than she thought. Amit has a dark purpose and is steadily working towards that goal, growing more unhinged by the day. You will not want to put this down! Definitely a five star read that will have you on the edge of your seat hoping for a satisfying conclusion!
Not what I expected very slow story development.
I liked the pace of this book. Kept me wanting to read more.
Didn’t like this book or the characters
