Do you believe there are ghosts and demons and Diviners among us?
Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City — and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfield girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her Uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession … and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.
Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.
As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened….

You had me at the 1920’s, you kept me with the spooky evil spirit mystery. Evie is a character full of spunk. She is clever and witty, getting caught in some shenanigans. I enjoyed the cast of unlikely friends and the mystery. Through it all Libba Bray did a great job entwining history in also!
It’s 1926, Evie O’Neill leaves her hometown to live in New York City with her Uncle Will. Evie can tell what you’ve done by touching an object you own. This is my first book by Libba Bray, it’s unusual. I like this book, it’s out of the normal stuff i like but it’s good to change things up a little. I like Evie, maybe a little too upbeat for me …
Book 111 towards my goal of 290! 3.5/5 stars for this Historical Fantasy reread. I didn’t quite love it as much this time around. Some bits felt very slow, and this book is CHUNKY. May try to read book 2 in the series, but not set on it at this time. Definitely has a creep factor to it!
I loved this first installment to this paranormal, mystery series! If you’re into the 1920’s and love mysteries, this book is the one for you. Not only was it extremely well written, but I enjoyed figuring out the truth behind each character’s story and then learning whether they had gifts or not…Plus, I love detective stories, and this book’s …
Set in 1920s New York City, this book is a fantastic introduction to a group of young people with amazing powers…and the dangers they are about to face. One of my favorite series!
This is a great start to an amazing series! The cast of characters are engaging–each with their own flaws and endearing quirks. The actual plot itself is sinister and haunting in this alternate reality which takes place in the 1920s. I am listening to the last book in the series called King of Crows. If you like audiobooks, I highly recommend …
Some parts of the story were really good. It was intriguing enough and I liked how all the main characters had something special/paranormal about them. The mystery was a nice touch as well, adding some supernatural suspense to the story.
I couldn’t like enjoy this book as much as I wanted to because it felt like too much was going on at once. The …
I LOVE this whole series! The 4th book just came out so I wanted to review the first one. It’s a supernatural epic mystery set in the 1920’s that fans of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries TV series will love (fans of the Miss Fisher book series will also probably love this, but it reminded me more of the TV series than the book). It seems extremely …
This one took me a minute to get into, probably because of the multiple POVs (so many!). But once I realized who all the main characters were going to be, I found myself equally intrigued by each of their storylines and eager for them to all come together and realize their connections. By the end of the book, I was totally hooked and I am onboard …
I absolutely love everything by Libba Bray, but this series is especially awesome! I couldn’t put it down and have read all the books available. Just waiting for the fourth and final installment, then I might have to go into mourning!
After Evie causes problems in her hometown in Ohio her parents ship her off to NY to live with her uncle for a few months until things die down. For a flapper like Evie it is just fine with her. With the speakeasies, Ziegfield Follies, and parties NY is the place to be in 1926. Her uncle is the curator of the “Museum of American Folklore, …
Creepy, but beautifully atmospheric. DEFINITELY a new favorite.
Love the entire series …can’t wait for the next book 🙂
Reasons I recommend this book? Um, because I’m obsessed with anything Libba Bray writes?
I love the creepy, supernatural world that Bray has created and the intersectionality in the book- Bray assembles a wonderful cast of diverse and well-rounded characters that you can’t help but root for and want to follow. The 1920s setting is vibrant and well researched and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait for the next book in …
