Ninety-nine percent of the time, the world spins like a top, the skies are clear, and your refrigerator is full of good food. But the world is a volatile placeOCostorms rage, fires burn, and diseases spread. No one is ever completely safe. Humans live as part of a very complex ecosystem that is unpredictable and merciless. Could you protect your family in the case of an emergencyOCodomestic or … global?
The “Disaster Preparedness Handbook” will help you to establish a practical disaster plan for your entire family (covering all fourteen basic human needs) in case the unpredictable happens. Additional information is also presented for those with special needs, including the elderly and disabled, children, pregnant women, and even pets. Well-researched by an army veteran and current NASA engineer, this is the essential guide every family should have, study, and keep handy, in case the unthinkable should occur.”

All-purpose book for any kind of disaster. Tons of information about what you and your family should do and should have in case of any emergency. This isn’t just about the “end-of-the-world” type of disaster or what to do in the event of a zombie attack. Useful and helpful information about what, who, when, where should there be a tornado, flood, hurricane, earthquake,
and other such things that might befall us in this life. Does not help so much in the event of a divorce, bankruptcy, or if your toilet backs up. Easy to read and follow instructions. Not your every-day read, but very useful to have at hand should a disaster happen to you.
detailed information on the full spectrum of disaster preparedness
Good book for its purpose. Very informative.
Excellent book for the person new to preparedness and for old hands as well. Written in a very easy-to-understand manner, with many illustrations and pictures, lists, charts, and recommendations, as well as pages for making notes and several checklists. Comprehensive selection of topics addressed at about a mid-level of detail. You can read the book cover to cover but each chapter also stands on it’s own. This book is designed to inform as well as to stimulate a person to take recommended actions to increase their state of preparedness.
These are the topics Dr Bradley covers: food, water, shelter, power, heating and cooling, air, sleep, medical/first aid, communication, financial preparedness, transportation, protection and special needs. Also encouragement and guidance in creating a preparedness network with your own family, friends and community. In fact, Dr Bradley very much believes that often survival depends on responding in conjunction with others, instead of a single family or individual attempting survival alone.
Another issue he discusses is the importance of testing your preparedness by trying out your response to various simulated disaster scenarios, to discover what you don’t have that you needed (or really, really wanted!) He provides several example scenarios to try, and how to implement them. In my opinion, some of them might be a little intense for very small children (like the house catching on fire in the middle of the night and blasting a fire alarm to wake everyone up), but kids need to know about disaster response, too, so perhaps could be implemented in a little less scary way for very little ones.
Dr Bradley does not purport to cover every possible topic related to disaster preparedness, nor does he teach bushcraft. But this book is perfect for those of us in urban or suburban areas, or even ranches and farms, who are not likely to prep at the level of the SAS Survival Manual (yes, I have that one, too), but still want to be prepared for the types of disasters that are most likely to occur where we live.
I traveled to Panama to live for a few months, and this was the preparedness book I brought with me. It covers so many topics, in such an approachable manner, it is worth having.
I recommend this book as a very good overall preparedness manual.
Great ideas for being prepared!
Good information presented in a way I found hard to follow. All the basics there to prepare for any disaster.
