Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in this electrifying #1 New York Times-bestseller from C. J. Box.Wyoming’s new governor isn’t sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. … and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes–these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and “ranch romances” aren’t uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.
At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he’s become Nate’s advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he’d imagined.

love the CJ Box books
I love any and all of C.J. Box’s stories. His Joe Pickett books are always page-turners. Nothing else gets done during one of his books. I read so fast the first time that I usually go back and re-read a few months later. His characters are so alive and entertaining, especially his best friend, Nate, and wife, Marybeth. If you like mysteries, unpredictable plots and action, you’ll enjoy his books. One of the few authors that I buy in hard back,
One of the better Boxx books.
Love following this ranger and his family
Always enjoy the Joe Pickett books, but must say C.J. Box forgot to end this one. I felt like he had a hard deadline to make, so that’s why the abrupt ending. Still, I wait every March for the next book, and would have picked this one up even knowing about the missing ending.
I like all the C. J. Box books in the Joe Picket series. Each is a complete story, but uses the same central characters. I’d recommend this series from the beginning which will provide the character development and explain their actions in this book. Open Season is the first book in the series.
This one gets five out of five stars!
A great read.
Box is the master of character development. He makes you fall n love with his family.
As with any book by CJ Box..I loved it.
Ultimate story teller!
Love this author! His books grab you from the start and keep you turning the pages
C J Box as written several great stories about a Wyoming game warden named Joe Pickett and there is always a lot of twists and turns to his plots. Not always an easy read as the description of situations Joe Pickett encounters can be a bit gruesome but over all I have enjoyed everyone of the series I have read.
Just enjoy everything this author has written.
I recommend this book with some reservation. While I like the Joe Pickett series and enjoyed this entry, I felt cheated by the abrupt ending and number of story lines left hanging. I will undoubtedly read the next book, because I like the characters, not because I want to find out how things turn out. I want closure now, but by the time the next installment comes out, I’ll have forgotten the story.
Not as good as previous books by CJ Box.
I have read all his books. They are fun to read and enjoyable. This one features our hero Joe Pickett, his grown daughter Sheridan, and once again Nate Romanowski comes to the rescue.
C.J. Box is one of the best crime writers around. He consistently delivers compelling characters and intriguing stories. If you’ve never read him you shouldn’t start with this book because the characters have detailed personal lives that progress through the books.
If you are a fan of Stephen Hunter you will like Box. His style is different but you will immediately recognize the common stance the two authors have on a variety of current issues.
Enjoy this author and his Joe Pickett character. Wyoming settings are familiar to me which enhances the read.
Love the Joe Pickett series. Box cannot write them fast enough for me. Cannot wait to see what happens to Pickett in the next book.
I admit that I am in love with Joe Pickett and once again this book proves that the Wyoming game warden is a great stand-up guy. New Governor Allen sends Joe to another district to look into the disappearance of Kate Shelford-Longden the CEO of an English advertising agency. The game warden who was in the district is no longer there and no one knows what happened to him. Of course, there is something else involved that Governor Allen is keeping to himself and Joe is sent off to do the governor’s bidding. Lucky for Joe Kate was last seen leaving Silver Creek Ranch a high-end resort where his daughter now works who gives him some insight into Kate. With research help from his wife Marybeth and his good friend Ned by his side not only will Kate’s mystery be solved but also the issue Ned reached out to Joe about for help. Another great Joe Pickett installment now I just have to wait for the next one.
C J Box never disappoints.
