Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in this electrifying #1 New York Times-bestseller from C. J. Box.Wyoming’s new governor isn’t sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. … and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes–these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and “ranch romances” aren’t uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else.
At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he’s become Nate’s advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he’d imagined.

I always wait eagerly for the next Joe Pickett novel by C.J. Box, but this mystery exceeded my expectations, probably because it focused more on the central character of Joe Pickett and his daughter Sheridan than his rather outlandish sidekick Nate Romanowski. The descriptions of a deadly cold Wyoming winter add to the suspense throughout this story, and the complications kept coming, building up to a satisfying ending. Keep ’em coming, C.J.!
If you are a fan of C J Box’s character Joe Picket, then you are going to thoroughly enjoy this latest Picket novel. Joe is a character who manages to always solve the crime while bumbling through a tough environment, This time Winter in Saratoga WY. The characters are just regular people except for possibly Nate Romanowski, who is back in this book in a good way. This was a very quick and enjoyable read with a couple interesting twists. Loved the newest Joe Pickett book. The glimpse of his relationship with Sheridan as a grown up is priceless. I love this character.
I love Joe Pickett and his family. Wyoming has a new governor and he isn’t very nice. And, an old enemy of Joe’s is working behind the scenes to ruin him. There is a missing British tourist and Gov. Allen sends Joe to look for her. Joe can’t figure out why he was sent to find the woman. He can’t find out what happened to the Game Warden from the area, who is just gone with no explanation. Nor can he find out why the DCI (Department of Criminal Investigation) was taken off the case. Nothing is making any sense and the pressure on Joe is mounting when Nate shows up.
The only bad thing about reading a Joe Pickett book, is the wait for the next one to come out.
Anything by C. J. Box is a good read
Great book
I had not read a Joe Pickett story in quite a while and really enjoyed this one. It was very fun reading about the oldest daughter and seeing Nate again. I really liked the story also. I have always loved this series.
I like to read CJ Box because he is a Wyoming author. And I relate to the
region he writes about.
Joe Pickett is sent by the governor to find Kate’s Shelford-Longden who had gone missing back in July. Nate Romanowski and some friends who were also in falconry wanted to speak with Joe. They wanted his help in getting permits to hunt with Eagles. Sheridan Joe’s oldest daughter was working at Silver Creek Ranch where Kate had disappeared from. This is a well-written book and a page turner. I recommend that you read this book…
No one, I truly mean no one, can wisk me away into a novel with such descriptive details of the scenery, that I mentally feel a physical draw to the area, except C. J. Box.
This novel THE DISAPPEARED spoke depths to my heart and had me engulfed into the plot with Joe Picket, Nate, And Sheridan.
I learned a great deal about the true cost of renewable energy and what sacrifices our beautiful nature, animals, and countryside sacrifices in order for those to benefit from it.
The plot to this story was one of C. J. Box’s best books.
Mystery, murder, revenge, and disappearance.
Absolutely phenomenal!
I like the way CJ Box writes, and builds his characters. There is suspense and surprises.
I enjoy all C.J. Box books with Joe Pickett. It does not leave you looking for action. The fact that he is a game warden, has a family that is lively and involved in the action taking place is great. Joe always seems to get into trouble but comes out in the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action and also clean content.
I thought this book was very good as are all the other books of his I have read. Love all the characters that have become a type of family. Can not wait for the next book in the series.
First book in the series that I have read, but now I know I want to read all the others.
I have read the whole series so far. I’m waiting for #19 to be released in March. I have enjoyed every one of them.
Another great book with Joe & Nate. Hard to put it down. I read it in 2 days! Now I have to wait until March for next book to find out what happened to Joe with new governor.
I read every entry in this series, because they are so realistic in terms of life in the west, the people, the attitudes, and the issues that are being dealt with by people who live there.
Easy to follow and great characters
Big fan of Craig Johnson’s Longmire series and this reminds me of his hero and friends. Great plot twits and picture of Wyoming winters.
I grew up in Wyoming, so Box’s books always take me on a nostalgic trip back to the mountains and plains I was so familiar with. He really _sees_ Wyoming because he lives there and apparently loves it as much as I did. His characters–especially Joe Picket–are genuine and engaging. I look forward to each new publication.
