It’s 1936, and Tobias Henry is stuck in the frozen hinterlands of Michigan. Tobias is obsessed with two things: God and girls.
Mostly girls, of course.
But being a Baptist preacher’s son, he can’t escape God.
When his father is blinded in a bizarre accident (involving hard cider and bird droppings), Tobias must ride the rails to Texas to recover a long-hidden stash of money. Along the way, he’s initiated into the hobo brotherhood by Craw, a ribald vagabond-philosopher. Obstacles arise in the form of a saucy prostitute, a flaming boxcar, and a man-eating catfish. But when he meets Sarah, a tough farm girl under a dark curse, he finds out that the greatest challenge of all is love.

Compelling characters, well written, thought provoking, entertaining, can you tell I loved it. And the title drags you in at the beginning.
I loved it. Read it over a weekend. Great read.
Read it a while back it was very good but that’s all I remember LOL
I really loved the start of the book. Written in the first person, the author told the story of maturing as the son of a preacher while being skeptical of his father’s beliefs. IT was funny early on, and there were subsequent parts that made me chuckle. There were also somewhat large gaps in the story, and the ending was just ok. It is a quick …
Really enjoyed the story and the travels across the country.

Loved this book! It was about a over zealot preacher who sends his son to Texas to finding hidden money and the crazy adventures the son has along the way. The son, Tobias, befriends a hobo before finding family in Texas. His family in Texas take him in and he learns more about his dad and life. A fun, …
Whatever you think this book is, you’re probably wrong. It caught me off guard, totally. I laughed and pondered and just gobbled it up. It’s inspired and unique in my long reading history. Sadly I haven’t found that the author followed this book up with anything to match it. Too bad.
I believe that I read this book because it was touted as a modern day Huckleberry Finn. There are some superficial comparisons to Huckleberry, but they are only superficial. The characters are amusing, and their experiences are often funny. However, I could not help feeling that it was a bit juvenile and “hokie.” The relationships between …
Some swearing, some hellfire, a hobo, and a not-too-beautiful girl. What do they have in common? A young man from Remus with a strong desire to experience life in all its richness. You’ll turn the pages, you’ll laugh, you’ll wonder at the twists and turns of life as Tobias steps forth on his mission. But you’ll never be bored or disinterested in …
Very special book to me and Funny
It’s so great to see authors from my neck of the woods (and ABNA alums) make it!
This story was a feast for the senses – including a wry sense of humor – with a charm and nostalgia that blends seamlessly with the that odd mixture of cynicism and hope that comes from coming of age. It’s the story of an everyman character who finds deep, deep …
Good story line and made me laugh.
A good story, but it moves a little slow at times.
Fun, easy read, with interesting characters.
This is one of the first books in a long, long time that I have literally enjoyed EVERY page! Reminiscent of “On the Road”, with some elements of “Candide” mixed in a bit with “Oh, Brother – Where Art Thou”. It was an absolute delight.
A lovely entertaining read
Absolutely adored this book! A tale of a young man and his travels while on his search for buried treasure. A must read!
Stupidest book I’ve read in quite a while.
I found this book disappointing; I expected something clever. The material was not new to me.
Easy read and fun. Main character had some choices to make and sometimes they were not easy.
