Oslo is sweltering in the summer heat when a young woman is murdered in her flat. One finger has been cut off and a tiny red diamond in the shape of a pentagram — a five-pointed star — is found under her eyelid. Detective Harry Hole is assigned the case with Tom Waaler, a colleague he neither likes nor trusts. He believes Tom is behind a gang of arms smugglers — and the murder of his partner. But … But Harry, an off-the-rails alcoholic, is barely holding on to his job and has little choice but to play nice.
Five days later, another woman is reported missing. When her severed finger is found adorned with a star-shaped red diamond ring, Harry fears a serial killer is on the loose. Determined to find the killer and expose the crooked Tom Waaler, Harry discovers the two investigations melding in unexpected ways. But pursuing the truth comes at a price, and soon Harry finds himself on the run and forced to make difficult decisions about a future he may not live to see.
One of the brightest stars of Scandinavian crime writing, Jo Nesbø has been compared to Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, and Henning Mankell. His novels are bestsellers throughout Europe, acclaimed by critics and revered by aficionados of thrillers and mysteries. Brilliantly plotted and paced, The Devil’s Star shows Nesbø at his absolute best, combining powerful emotional resonance with truly stunning suspense.

It had a good story a little different. Main character is a flawed guy. Actually two villains in the book. A little slow reading maybe due to the translation.
I really enjoyed this book I have since gone on to read several other in the series
One of the best books in the Harry Hole series. I recommend reading in order.
As a big fan of Joe Lesbo, this novel was a hit. Great read!
Harry Hole is a complicated character..hard to like him, hard not to like him. Always entertaining
This book is awful Slow read boring I deleted it
Another wonderful thriller by Jo Nesbo. Definitely 5 stars.
I love Jo Nesbo and for anyone who hasn’t read him & likes well written thrillers — you are missing out!!
DNF. I got totally entangled in references to earlier books in the series that made no sense. I finally gave up.
Not to much suspense but interesting to read police action in another country.
I’m completely hooked on the Harry Hole series and am reading my way through it. Spectacular sentences, character descriptions, complex timing weaving multiple threads of the plot. Breathtaking.
Jo Nesbo is far and away the best crime writer today in any language today. About one step past Steig Larson in vividness and twisted characters. His detective, Harry Hole, is (naturally) an obsessive and somewhat destructive personality. Gripping read.
Best to look up the order of the Harry Hole novels and read them in order.
Another great Harry Hole tale.
Harry is a tragic character. With his alcoholic lifestyle and everything that he has gone through he is lucky to be alive. But here he is giving us another incredible adventure. Too bad the latest book are priced out of reach for me and others. I’ll not buy them at those prices. Too bad!!!
Anything by Nesbo is worth reading.
A very interesting mystery about a cop with a drinking problem, but nonetheless very much respected among his peers. The only thing I didn’t like and found annoying is names and people and places that were difficult to pronounce. It kept my interest, with lots of twists, and very unpredictable.
Too much of Harry’s alcoholism but overall very good. Nesbo is easy to read with good sentence structure and always suspenseful.
Jo Nesbo does not disappoint.
I enjoyed this book very much, stayed up late to finish the ending.
It. Was a page turner and I could not always figure out the next turn as in all his books. It was exciting and keep you on the edge of your seat
