Oslo is sweltering in the summer heat when a young woman is murdered in her flat. One finger has been cut off and a tiny red diamond in the shape of a pentagram — a five-pointed star — is found under her eyelid. Detective Harry Hole is assigned the case with Tom Waaler, a colleague he neither likes nor trusts. He believes Tom is behind a gang of arms smugglers — and the murder of his partner. But … But Harry, an off-the-rails alcoholic, is barely holding on to his job and has little choice but to play nice.
Five days later, another woman is reported missing. When her severed finger is found adorned with a star-shaped red diamond ring, Harry fears a serial killer is on the loose. Determined to find the killer and expose the crooked Tom Waaler, Harry discovers the two investigations melding in unexpected ways. But pursuing the truth comes at a price, and soon Harry finds himself on the run and forced to make difficult decisions about a future he may not live to see.
One of the brightest stars of Scandinavian crime writing, Jo Nesbø has been compared to Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, and Henning Mankell. His novels are bestsellers throughout Europe, acclaimed by critics and revered by aficionados of thrillers and mysteries. Brilliantly plotted and paced, The Devil’s Star shows Nesbø at his absolute best, combining powerful emotional resonance with truly stunning suspense.

Always recommend Harry Hole stories. Great reading.
I love all Jo Nesbo’s books. Harry Hole is an interesting, yet sad character.
Not my favourite Harry Hole book but if you’ve read and enjoyed the previous books there’s no reason why you wouldn’t enjoy this one.
As usual lots and lots of background detail and in some cases you’re not sure how relevant it is until much later in the book. I did feel Harry’s alcohol and mental health issues were overdone and the story didn’t …
All of Nesbo’s work is first rate. Harry Hole is a great but tortured soul.
Loving this character Harry Hole. Very entertaining and realistic detective. Seems like a good translation of the original novel. Fast paced, great storyline with an intelligent hard to guess plot.
Joe Nesbo strikes again with a book (like so many of his) that I could not put down.
More twists than a strawberry twizzler………
I love all of his books! This one did not disappoint!
Another great book by Jo Nesbo. Nobody does the serial killer genre, quite like him. And once again, Harry Hole is the guy you root for but who can’t seem to get out of his own way. His own battle with alcoholism is just as daunting as the race to catch the killer. Though not as good as The Snowman, it’s still an entry worth reading in the series.
I have read all of the Harry Hole Detective books by Jo Nesbo and all of them were great. I can’t tell you much about any one of them but would highly recommend them all. Guess it’s time for me to reread them.
Detective Harry Hole is cajoled into accepting a case working with a hated partner. The investigation points to a serial killer with specific methods, but seemingly no motive. Hole’s personal life and demons always complicate matters. Set during a very hot Oslo summer, this suspenseful thriller doesn’t disappoint. The author writes the best Nordic …

Wonderful book. Great characters and intricate plot as well as characters which grow and evolve during the book. Unexpected events and bizarre twists. Great read!
This book shows why Jo Nesbo is at the height of his game.
Love the characterizations but a lot of violence.
I read and love all of Jo Nesbo’s books. The writing is always excellent and the stories compelling.
Big fan of Nesbo – his one hits the mark
Fast paced … buckle up!
