Oslo is sweltering in the summer heat when a young woman is murdered in her flat. One finger has been cut off and a tiny red diamond in the shape of a pentagram — a five-pointed star — is found under her eyelid. Detective Harry Hole is assigned the case with Tom Waaler, a colleague he neither likes nor trusts. He believes Tom is behind a gang of arms smugglers — and the murder of his partner. But … But Harry, an off-the-rails alcoholic, is barely holding on to his job and has little choice but to play nice.
Five days later, another woman is reported missing. When her severed finger is found adorned with a star-shaped red diamond ring, Harry fears a serial killer is on the loose. Determined to find the killer and expose the crooked Tom Waaler, Harry discovers the two investigations melding in unexpected ways. But pursuing the truth comes at a price, and soon Harry finds himself on the run and forced to make difficult decisions about a future he may not live to see.
One of the brightest stars of Scandinavian crime writing, Jo Nesbø has been compared to Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, and Henning Mankell. His novels are bestsellers throughout Europe, acclaimed by critics and revered by aficionados of thrillers and mysteries. Brilliantly plotted and paced, The Devil’s Star shows Nesbø at his absolute best, combining powerful emotional resonance with truly stunning suspense.

I found the book to be a difficult read and lost interest.
I’ve read a number of Mr. Nesbo’s works and I truly love his unique style. This book, as all the others, keep you on the edge of your seat. While the main character survives, he is never left without scars that continually shape the poor soul he keeps plodding along. Definitely recommend this one or any of this author’s books.
with an alcoholic as the main character I lost interest quickly and quit reading. Not even a sympathetic drunk
I liked it
A most enjoyable read. Harry Hole is a genius! Can’t help feeling bad for him.
Love Harry Hole
Excellent plot, vivid characters, and my favorite: Harry. Highly recommended as a book to lose yourself in for several days. (And it’s all grammatical!).
The psychological depth of the characters was impressive
I’m a fan of Jo Nesbo. All of his books are great.
Creepy, creepy, creepy and dark. Made me want to read more Harry Hole stories, which I did. Kept me reading past my bedtime.
Jo Nesbo and Harry Hole are not to be missed.
Just the best. Read the entire series.
Harry Hole is both sympathetic and believable. You’re rooting for him while Nesbo keeps you preoccupied with red herrings! Looking forward to the next venture into Oslo.
Another great read in the Harry Hole series!
I love the whole Harry Hole series. The protagonist is deeply flawed and the plot is intricate. I could hardly put the book down.
