I was waiting for this dark mafia romance sooo much and as always Dani never disappoint.
The characters, the plot, it’s die for.
Victor is a dominant alpha male who is jealous and possessive and Sofia is just the light to his darkness.
Can they have happily ever after with their story?
This story was absolutely delicious. I love a good mafia, book and this is one of them. It’s dark, dangerous, twisted, and steamy. It has everything you’ll expect from a mafia story and more.
The Devil’s Plaything is about the King of Columbia. He is the ruler of all and what he says goes no matter what, so when something goes awry, he has to deal with it the best way he can.
Dani, is the best at what she does and I love her books.
I couldn’t put this one down. It kept me up into the wee hours of the morning and it was totally worth it. There are a few scenes that could be a trigger, but most of those are the detailed violence you would expect in a mafia romance. There is one scene that could trigger someone who is sensitive to non-consent, but for the most part the story isn’t as dark as some of Dani Rene’s other books.
I loved the characters of Victor and Sophia and their steamy, passionate romance was the perfect blend of brutality and tenderness. There were quite a few surprises throughout the story that added to the intensity, but for the most part that intensity comes from the interactions of the main characters. I loved that Sophia was so fiesty and didn’t back down when it came to her anger with Victor. She was defiant and snarky, even when she was frozen with fear. The calm, controlled Victor was the perfect counterpoint to her. He is the guy your parents warn you about that you can’t walk away from. He isn’t a nice man, but he is a hero in his own way.
Aside from the amazingly written romance between these two, the story has a very strong plot. It is a roller coaster ride of dangerous situations, intrigue, and secrets that kept me glued to the pages. That’s one of the things I love about this author. She doesn’t just focus on the romance or the back story. They are both rich in detail and fully developed, so I don’t find myself skipping parts or skimming over anything. Every single scene is well thoughtout. It’s pure pleasure from beginning to end.
This book was amazing! It was so dark and twisted! I absolutely loved it!!
Dani Rene has written another amazing dark romance. This is a mafia/enemies-to-lovers/kidnap romance, know before you start that it is a DARK romance!! This story is classic mafia romance- Victor Cordero, the notorious diablo or King of Colombia, takes Sofia Montera when her father fails to pay off a large debt. Like all good antiheroes, in the beginning you see a sharp contrast between good (Sofia) and evil (Victor.) As the story precedes you realize that everything is not black and white. I really enjoyed this read and think anyone who is a fan of this genre will fly through it.
I love Dani René’s dark romance reads, add in mafia elements with sizzling chemistry between the main characters and I’m in heaven!
Victor Cordero is the King of Columbia, the Devil himself, cross him and pay the price.
Sofia Montero offers herself as payment for her father’s mistakes, hoping to save him.
Neither of them realise what they’ve gotten themselves into.
Deliciously dark story, beautifully written characters, Dani René at her best!
I love a great mafia romance and The Devil’s Plaything was one dark, compelling and engaging read.
Victor Cordero was the ruthless king of Columbia who enchanted me from the start. Rich, powerful and sexy as sin he attracted Sofia like a moth to flame. I loved Sofia’s tenacity and how she wasn’t afraid to stand up to the Devil if need be. I adored watching her turn her spitfire side loose especially when it brought out Victor’s dominant and possessive nature. Watching the sparks fly between these two as their intense chemistry sizzled was enchanting.
Real, gritty and intense The Devil’s Plaything was a twisted and intense read that I refused to put down until I had devoured every dark and delicious word. Now I’m left keeping my fingers crossed that a certain right- hand man will get his own story sometime soon.
If you are a fan of quick and dirty mafia romance, this is a good choice for you! I personally struggle with it, and this was no exception. I have to suspend a lot of my disbelief to really fall into the story here, but it’s well-written and very sexy!
If this is your thing, you’ll enjoy it!
The Devil’s Plaything by Dani Rene is the story of Sofía Montero and Victor Cordero.
Victor (37) is a dark and dangerous man know as ‘The Devil’ but his also the King of the Colombian drug cartel. No one betrays or steals from him and lives to tell the story. So when one of his older employees ends up stealing from him of course he goes into action. But Victor learns the man has a daughter and thinks that the would be the ultimate revenge by taking that daughter. Sofia (18) is a young innocent women who has her own struggles but didn’t know of her father’s exact work until she became the payment for her father’s betrayal. Sofia does know the dark reputation that Victor has but it doesn’t stop her from showing her strong side. Victor has never felt such a passion nor connection to anyone like he has for Sofia. This of course makes him more angry with the uncontrollable feelings but where Victor is the devil….Sofia is the angle that may just take him on.
Really enjoyed this dark alpha read. I can’t wait to read more from this author!.
The Devil’s Plaything is a dark mafia romance by Dani Rene and is told in dual POV.
“Victor Cordero is the devil. Cruel. Sadistic. Heartless.” The King of Colombia is as ruthless as they come and believes that falling in love would make him weak. I fell for Victor Cordero almost immediately. He is cocky and arrogant and a complete asshole yet with every despicable act he committed I found myself falling harder. There was just something about him that had me so enamored with him. Dani Rene sneaks little glimpses of Victor’s heart and humanity into this dark brutal story line and each flip of the page felt like I was peeling away Victor’s layers to get to the real man underneath.
“Sofia Montero is an angel. Beautiful. Sweet. Intoxicating.” Sofia is a fragile young woman who has led a very sheltered life. She’s always been a good girl, but she craves the darkness and the ruthless King of Colombia has always intrigued her. Despite her attraction to him she hates him and everything he stands for. Her story is not what you’d expect, and I admired her tenacity and strength in the face of the tragedies she has suffered.
When Sofia’s father is caught stealing from Victor, he demands her as payment. Desperate to save her father she agrees to be his prisoner. Both have their own agendas and are determined to beat the other at their own game. What will happen when the devil makes an angel his plaything?
“She’s offered herself up as the prey…And what she doesn’t know is how much I love the hunt.”
The Devil’s Plaything is a mind blowing read full of everything dark romance and mafia lovers want in a book. Danger, suspense, violence, betrayal, hate, passion, lust and so much more. Not to mention Victor’s sexy and a bit mysterious right-hand man Javier.
Victor and Sofia are the epitome of fire and ice! Love-hate perfection!
“Our mouths fuse with venom and passion, pure and feral, lust-filled and hate-fueled.”
I was completely hooked from the first page and every page that followed was more riveting than the last sucking me into this world that was so much more than I ever imagined!

Dark Mafia Romance; I love it!
Ms. Rene has deviously drawn this reader in to Sofia’s story! Payment for her father’s wrong doing to the unforgiving mafia leader, Victor.
Victor is a man not to be loved! Or, is he? I, like many other readers, wonder about their normalcy when our author’s bad boys make us love them when we shouldn’t! Ms. Rene has made me root for the bad boy! Victor, please, come through for me!
If you like dark, Ms. Rene has done a fabulous job with this genre! More, please!
I received an advanced reader copy, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Dani has done it again! Another phenomenal read. A dark, twisted and emotional romance that pulls you in from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down! The Devil’s Plaything is a phenomenally written story with amazing and unforgettable characters. Sofía Montero and Victor Cordero are what most would see as an unexpected couple, but these two couldn’t be more perfect for one another. It’s by far my favorite mafia romance to-date.
Dani stepped out of her usual genre and wrote this magnificent mafia book that had me hooked. What an incredibly strong alpha who had me swooning and devouring this story in one sitting. Victor is your strong alpha who is on top of his drug cartel and thinking he needs no one besides his best friend. Sofia is the perfect princepesa who is sold to Victor to pay off her father’s debt. The building of their relationship with the tug and pull and HOT steam created for a fantastic adventure with twists and turns.
Be warned — there could be trigger issues for some in this read however if triggers aren’t an issue you won’t be disappointed.
This novel travels on the darker side of humanity. It is a fantastic read, that has you not only rooting for the ‘bad’ guy, but feeling the love. Victor and Sofia are amazing. Their beginning is not traditional; Victor is an extremely possessive alpha male and Sofia is a strong willed, spit fire of a woman especially when she feels fear. The path they started on was not easy, they both fight against themselves and each other. It is an emotionally packed journey that will have you rushing through the book, only to be sad it’s over. I LOVE this book!
First dip in the Mafia pool for this talented author, NAILED IT!!
I was not the least bit surprised that Sofia fell for bad boy Victor, what red bloodied woman wouldn’t. Looks, money, power and a hell of a sex drive, now that’s a man I could sleep beside at night.
As young as she was in age, Sofia to me was an old soul. She saw so much devastation not only in her town and country but in her own home losing her mother at such a young age. I loved the way she stood up to Victor. It showed a true fighting spirit even going through the medical issues she had.
Given the strong personalities of both main characters you would never imagine then connecting like they did. That being said, Love/Hate relationships are sometimes the strongest. The chemistry between Victor & Sofia will melt your kindle so don’t hold too tight or you will get burned.
Javier was an amazing secondary character. More than once going toe to toe with Victor, but true loyalty will always shine through. I’m seriously hoping there is more of him to come in the future.
High 5 to this awesome multi genre author on adding another notch to her belt. So looking forward to seeing what comes next.

“Everything looks better from above, my king […]
I adore you, can’t you see you’re meant for me?
The summer’s hot
But I’ve been cold without you
I was so wrong not to doubt, your Medellín tangerine dream.”

What’s this book about? (I’m trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
Victor Cordero is the King of Colombia. With that name, there comes a cruel reputation alongside of it. Sofía Montero is a victim of circumstance. She’s innocent, but her father is not. He made a mistake. And she’s the payment.
This isn’t my first Dani René read and I’ve definitely read a bunch of mafia novels. This story is dark and steamy as hell. It was an easy read and most certainly a page-turner. The back and forth between the leading couple was thrilling. The innocent heroine put up a good fight! Her relationship with her family was one of her best qualities. The chemistry between Victor and Sofía build slowly; as both were fighting what was growing between them. After a while, it was undeniable though! The steam was exquisite between the main couple; graphic scenes in other situation that were bloodier were also present, so beware of that. This novel does the mafia genre justice, that’s for sure.
Victor was as dark and mean as can be; it was difficult to relate to him in some way and for that, I give only 4 stars (which in itself means that it’s still an excellent read). In my opinion, his redeeming quality (without counting Sofía) was his best friend Javier. I found him entertaining (word-choice in a mafia novel LOL) and definitely worth of his own story.
I recommend this read to lovers of Colombian bad boys, mafia reads and doomed innocent heroines.
3.5
I am a lover of all things dark, the darker the better actually. I think there’s something inherently honest about dark romance, the grit and violence that accompanies them speaks to my soul. Having said that I was very excited to read this the blurb piqued my interest and I was all about it. However, it just missed the mark for me on a few aspects.
. , ’ .
Victor Cordero is the King of the Colombian drug cartel. He’s dark, twisted and deviously violent wrapped up in a beautiful package. Through this story we hear a lot about how violent and angry Victor is, how he doesn’t forgive and doesn’t give any mercy. However, it felt more like talk than actually showing us his dark tendencies. You see a couple things but not enough to show me that he is the King of the drug cartel. I wanted to see him run his Town and destroy all those in his way or that wrong him, and you don’t really get to see much of that. His character for me just lacked some substance and I couldn’t really feel his connection to Sofia. Everything about them felt superficial, I wanted their connection to jump from the pages and make sense and it fell a little flat for me.
, .
I liked Sofia with her fiery temper and without giving anything away there is an underlying layer to the storyline that took it in a direction that I wasn’t prepared for but enjoyed. But I really wanted Dani to go more in depth with it, I think it could have gone so much deeper than it did and could have really brought out more intense feelings in the story and added a more powerful level of desperation in the characters.
. . .
All in all, there were just some things in this story that I wish had more depth. The writing style is there, and it is rife with potential it’s just missing some elements for me. Dani has a wonderful way with words and her precision in executing them is meticulous, I just wanted more. This story is good and the bones of it are great, it’s definitely worth a read. And ultimately I think that’s the test of a good writer when you like what you read you just need more of it.
Fantastic mafia read. Victor and Sofia chemistry sizzles. Their is so much going on and plot flows flawlessly. Loved this story.
After reading Dani’s first mafia novel, I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing she cannot write and completely smash. I absolutely love this book. It’s brutal, dark, passionate and all consuming. It’s the way a mafia book should be written. I can’t recommend it enough. Victor is my new book boyfriend. He is the stuff that dark fantasies are made of. Taking, no asking but underneath it all he has a heart…well for some. If mafia is your bag then you have to read this book!
