Delaney Murphy has always known she’s the Devil’s daughter. And although the title itself is a burden, she never expects to inherit all her father’s infernal abilities. When her newfound magic begins to poison the people closest to her, Laney must make a choice. To protect the world from the worst she can do, she leaves everyone she loves behind and builds a new life for herself, alone, in a … place where she can control the urge to give in to the magic living within her.
But when she recognizes a familiar pattern in a string of murders, Laney leaves her peaceful, isolated life behind and goes on the hunt, unleashing a threat she never dreamed possible. Confronting this menacing specter could mean giving in to temptation and becoming the one thing she fears most. Will she use her magic to do the right thing, even if it means hurting the ones she loves?

The devil is her dad . . . but he’s not such a bad guy after all.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a twisty, turny romp through the Nebraska countryside, with a fun reimagining of the devil and his daughter. I’m looking forward to reading book 2!
Completely epic spin on the devil … and his family and love life.
A fun take on the devil’s daughter!
My first read by this author, I wasn’t certain of what to expect but as I write this, I’ve already devoured about 25% of her next book in the series.
‘The Devil’s Own’ is a really fun urban fantasy sort of spin on Satan, or more accurate, his daughter. She’s a good character with strong values who pretty much just wants to get through life without hurting anyone. Naturally, her status is high profile and various entities want her dead so there’s no shortage of excitement or action.
Cover:
Excellent! Relevant to the story; no doubt that is Laney on the cover.
Editing/ Proofing:
It’s pretty clean. I noted a few incidents of things I’d do differently or the occasional missed comma, but nothing that pulled me out of the story.
Character development:
Advanced! Brilliant work here. I expect I’ll keep learning more about at least some of them as I read on into the series and more of their backgrounds become relevant.
Overall:
The author even manages to work in a small town that I so much want to move to … and a dog who is full of personality. This book weaves an intriguing start to a series, some legends/myths, comedy, love, action, danger, mystery, thrills and so much more and puts a very modern spin on all of it. I cannot get enough of the various types of demons and their traits.
Completely suitable for young readers. While there might be some blossoming love, there is no heat. (And it’s not needed.)
Very good read and clearly, by a very talented author.
4 stars
Th his was a fun easy read. Fun characters too.
Laney has powers and now she has to find her place in the world. Having a father like hers is not really helping and then there is a series of crimes alerting the enemy to Laney’s existence. This makes her life even more dangerous and a lot harder.
Someone is taking out local girls working in bars and Delaney wants to take him down. She’s confident that all the defensive training she’s received can be put to good use. I mean, her father has excellent resources to train her, he is the devil after all. But now, something or someone is coming after Laney, but why?
Even though she’s chosen her home for a reason, Laney’s father, Agnus, doesn’t like her living out in the middle of nowhere alone. So he’s sent along some protection and she’s going to have to get used to having some extra company while they wait for the inevitable.
There are some great characters in The Devil’s Own. Laney herself is strong and assertive, my most favorite kind of main character. Miss Tilly in town, who “sees” is a strict, no-nonsense woman, and I would love to see more of her and her abilities. Moose is a hellhound her father has sent, and he’s instantly likable. I wouldn’t mind a Moose of my own. Callum is a demon, he’s strong and talented, and even though he’s been ordered by Agnus to be there, you can tell he wants to be. The three of them are an unlikely trio and even though Laney is used to being alone, they might just break down the walls she’s built.
An unexpected man, a detective no less, enters the already crowded mix. Torren was an unexpected character in the story and I don’t have high hopes for him. He’s not an overly deep character and I wasn’t as drawn to him as the other characters. To me, Torren just doesn’t fit into the already existing Trio. I do have high hopes for Cal and I think the whole situation is easier with him because he lives this kind of life.
The writing and storyline are good. I thought Fox’s take on the devil was super fun. While I knew this was the first book, I was a bit disappointed that it’s more of a serial than a series, as you don’t get a wrap-up and will need the following books to finish the story. But, Fox has me hooked, and I cannot wait to continue Laney’s story and see where the story takes us. Overall a really fun read!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this, but I really enjoyed this read!
What happens when your dad, a presumed dead Rockstar, is also the Devil? And you just want to live a normal, human life because your mom is human, but your dad’s abilities start showing up in you, and in a very unsubtle way?
Delaney is a relatable, likeable character. To protect everyone she loves, she secludes herself with these new powers. She only sees her dad and uncle Newt with any kind of regularity, leaving this bold, quirky, fun and sassy heroine pretty lonely. At her roots Delaney feels GOOD, and I really like her as a character.
I love this genre, and I wasn’t let down by this story at all! I can’t wait for the next in the series. I recommend this read!
A nice little mystery
Hmmm, where to start. Normally I’d give a brief summary but pretty much anything I say beyond what’s in the blurb will give away plot points that are more fun when discovered on your own. I liked this book and ended up reading it in one sitting. I guess I’d classify it as a clean, young adult paranormal mystery.
What I liked: Aside from the paranormal aspects, the characters are realistic; the plot moves right along and it’s a pretty good mystery too. Good enough to keep me up until 2:00 AM. The ending is a happy for now with a promise for more in the next book. Which I am looking forward to.
Amazing series. Cannot wait for book 3, Earthly Shadows (Murphy’s Law Book 3) !
I love a good murder mystery, and with paranormal elements thrown in, this one is a winner!
Kindle Unlimited
A Young Adult urban fantasy, The Devil’s Own: Murphy’s Law is the first in a series about Delaney Murphy, daughter of Satan, who attempts to live a life in the shadows as soon as it becomes obvious she has inherited more than her father’s red-tinged hair. And she must re-enter the world again when a series of murders have returning-serial-killer written all over them.
A quick read with interesting characters and a fast pace, The Devil’s Own is an entertaining series that will bring a bright spot to your Covid world. I was especially fond of the roles played by the dog. Dogs. I checked this first of the series out from Kindle Unlimited when I was gifted the second in the series, Judas Kiss, by the Author and publisher. This is a series I will keep track of for those windy days ahead of us here in the high plains desert. Just the ticket to get me out of the doldrums.
This was a nice start to the series, but I struggled with the main character’s father’s relationship/connection with everyone. maybe it’s made more clear in the rest of the series. I will probably pick up at least the next book.
4.5 Stars!
I’ve read plenty of novels dealing with the abstract idea of the devil. When I read the summary for The Devil’s Own, I was intrigued by the idea of not only getting to know the devil up close and personal, but to discover the traits he passes on to his half human daughter.
Delaney Murphy is the daughter of late rock legend, Angus Murphy aka the devil. Not even Angus knew that his daughter would inherit some of his darkest powers, but she did. As a teen and in the worst place possible, Delaney’s powers manifest and cause her to go into hiding in the bowels of hell with her father for two years.
The way I understand it is both Delaney and Angus need the energy of others to survive. They call it feeding. Since her assent back to the earthly plane, Delaney has lived a life of seclusion on a large property outside of Omaha, Nebraska. That was until she caught the scent of a demon serial killer.
Delaney goes undercover to catch this killer and makes it out alive, but not unnoticed. Once back in Nebraska, Angus sends someone to watch over his only daughter and keep her safe. Callum pops up at a most inopportune moment, but gradually grows on Delaney. I thought this might make a romance while fighting evil, but someone else shows up to make the duo a trio. Torren was the detective assigned to the case Delaney went undercover for. He tracks her to Nebraska and finds out who she really is. The trio along with the most adorable hell hound, Moose, set out to fight a new evil literally in Delaney’s back yard.
What I had envisioned as a supernatural mystery with an in-depth look into the devil was so much more. At only 205 pages, Fox packs information and thrills into every one. From start to finish, Fox kept me guessing and gave me a new insight into the underworld and the effect it has on the earthly plane. Since this is the first in the Murphy’s Law series, I envision reading more about the other worldly adventures of Delaney and her crew in the future. I don’t know when the next book comes out, but I can’t wait to sink my teeth into another story from K.A. Fox!
I received The Devil’s Own for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
The book hooked me from the beginning and kept me turning the pages. I loved the father daughter relationship, and the tension and stakes between them. Looking forward to book two.
I don’t read YA. In fact, I haven’t read YA since I was YA, or much fantasy for that matter. But a friend recommended this and I quickly found myself captured by the smooth writing and exciting story. If you like clever stories about strong young women fighting against mysterious forces of evil, this is a great story for you…
