London 1889. A dead man is found floating in the city’s waterworks. Fearing an epidemic, the Metropolitan Police call upon bacteriologist Dr Anton Kronberg to examine the body. All signs point toward cholera having killed the man…but for faint marks around wrists and ankles.
Evidence for a crime is weak, and the police lose interest in the case. But Kronberg suspects that the dead man’s final days had been steeped in cruelty. Soon, a second victim is found, and Kronberg gets embroiled in a web of abduction, abuse, and murder.
But catching a killer and staying alive would be easier if the doctor didn’t have secrets of…her own.
Warning: medical procedures are depicted without apology.

I picked this book free read it and went back to buy Book #1 and will read the rest. A beautifully written historical Mystery.
I so admire authors willing to go through the process of producing an historically accurate, if fictional account of a time and place. All that and a wonderfully original story about a young woman who takes on a hidden …
The first few pages paint a picture of the conditions during the time of the story. It is a little uncomfortable to read but it is necessary for our understanding of the story.
Great characters and world creation. I didn’t want to put this book down. My eyes forced me to read it in 2 sittings, but it is 3am as I finish reading it. A great …
Good read, interesting story with some new characters and some classic characters. Hard to put down, read this in a day.
I always loved Sherlock Homes stories. This did not disappoint. It was written in the style of Doyle but modernized. Great read!
Interesting portrayal/exploration of personal and social sexuality!
I really like how this book progressed. I found myself trying to make time to get back to it. I never thought I’d like a Sherlock Holmes mystery, but with new characters and crimes, it was an intriguing and entertaining read.
Bring on more of the Anna/Anton stories! Anna is a worthy competitor to the Mary Russell character.
Sherlock Holmes is back and I can never get enough of him. The Devil’s Grin is a well written page turner that happily returned Sherlock to my life. Book two of a series, i missed book one and may go back, definitely going to read book three.
The clever intersection of a heroine detective connecting with Sherlock Holmes was a great plot twist. I warmly recommend the read.
A woman in Victorian England disguises herself as a man every day in order to practice the medical profession she loves as a bacteriologist. Two bodies show up, one with cholera and one with tetanus, and it appears they were intentionally made ill. An interested party to the mystery is Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed the erudite exchanges between the …
Love this book!! Plan on reading the rest of the series. Such a fun twist to Sherlock Holmes. Highly recommend.
Anna Kronberg is a great writer. This book is very realistic for its time period. It kept my interest throughout and I wanted more!
Thought provoking
I like anything Sherlock Holmes but this was quite a twist!
Perhaps i would have enjoyed this book more had i read the first in the series. I liked it well enough but don’t feel much interest in reading more. The woman-passing-as-a-man theme is fine for a short time, but i don’t really believe in this character’s double life.
Interesting character, a woman having to pretend to be a man in order to practice medicine. Involvement of Sherlock Holmes a nice way to move plit along and add some intrigue
This is a page-turner! I liked Dr Kronberg, and thought Sherlock Holmes was well portrayed. I will definitely read the next installment.
great book, fabulous writing
If you like Shelock Holmes you will enjoy this.
So riveting, exciting and so well written, you hate to put it down. The best part is that it’s part of a set of four, and they are all excellent. I live in Florida so no snowstorms here but in a hurricane where power can be out for days, you can find me sitting next to a big candle with these books. If you love Sherlock Holmes, as I do, you are …
