I really enjoyed this debut novel by Maddison Michaels. Sophie, the heroine is the witty, courageous friend I want in my corner, and Devlin is the perfect rake. The pace is quick, the author presents the Victorian era well, and I love a little mystery with my romance.
In her debut novel, Maddison Michaels brings us a charming historical romance. Queen Victoria blackmails Devlin Markham, the Duke of Huntington, into marriage in exchange for her backing one of his financial dealings. She has chosen Sophie Wolcott as his bride to be. Fortunately, Markham is rather fond of the tomboyish Sophie. When she spurns him, he buys the property her pet project, an orphanage, is built on and, in turn, blackmails her into marrying him in order to keep her orphanage open. The two are satisfied with the business-like marriage, but somehow, despite the fact that it’s a business arrangement, can’t keep their hands off each other.
Underlying the love story is a murder mystery, and the killer seems to be heading Sophie’s way. There are numerous plot twists and the usual wronged feelings/heartaches caused when couples don’t communicate well.
I was taken out of the story once by the word shindig which seemed too America.
An exceptionally clever who dunnit wrapped up in an enchanting love story, is the wonderful debut and first book in the Saints & Scoundrels series, by Maddison Michaels. I adored this book. There was mystery, an eventual love, and lots of colourful characters to keep the pages turning.
Devlin and Sophie were enjoyable to read about, with playful, witty banter that made them an adorable couple. I had lots of theories about who was commiting the murders too, but I did not guess who it was in the end. A fabulous twist!
I’m looking forward to reading book two in this series, The Elusive Earl!
I listened to this incredibly well written romance mystery on Audible with the talented Justin Eyre.
I loved the Duke and Lady Sophie. How their situations fined them needing to marry! Such a wonderful story, with great characters. Devlin and Sophie are perfect for each other. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense in this book!! I cannot wait to read and or listen to this very talented books!
Maybe 4.5 stars – there was a lot to like about this book and I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, she was able to change the tone of the book going from fun and flirty to down right terrifying and back to fun without disrupting the flow of the story, which in my experience is quite impressive, especially from a debut author!!
Lady Sophie Wolcott and Devlin Markham, the Duke of Huntington meet when Sophie falls out of tree after spying on the man of her dreams and seeing him propose to another woman. Devlin aka the Devil Duke is in the midst of a heated tryst when Sophie lands in the bushes. He helps her up and sends his trysting partner on her way. He and Sophie talk for a bit and she is surprised that she is not nearly as heartbroken as she thought and that she is attracted to Devlin – but that will never do because he is a rake and she will never, ever let herself fall for a rake.
A year later, Devlin is meeting with the Queen, he needs her approval for the construction of the Trans-Atlantic Cable, a project he is heavily invested in. The Queen refused to sign unless Devlin gives up his rakish ways and settles down with a respectable woman. Devlin is not happy about being blackmailed by the Queen, but agrees. He knows exactly who he is going to marry – Lady Sophie, the woman who didn’t fall for his charms and the woman he hasn’t been able to forget.
Sophie has decided that she is not going to marry, she will devote herself to the orphanage that her mother supported and be content with that. So when she hears that both her former crush Richard, Lord Abeland and the rake she can’t forget Huntington are both looking for wives, she feigns disinterest. Later that evening she sees Richard and knows that what she felt was just a youthful infatuation and she is over him, but Huntington is a different story, when he approaches her and flirts and says they should marry, she is tempted, but after seeing what her mother endured at the hands of a rake, she just laughs it off. He promises her a huge donation for her orphanage and tells her he will call on her the next day.
The next day Sophie has two visitors, first Richard shows up, he wants to know if Sophie has heard from a former resident of her orphanage, Jane. Jane worked as a housemaid at his home until his wife died, and now he is looking for a missing journal, he is not accusing Jane, but needs to talk to her. Sophie admits that she hasn’t heard from Jane, but will write to her. Unbeknownst to Sophie, Jane has been murdered and now the murderer thinks Sophie knows who he is and has her in his sights. When Devlin arrives, he and Richard begin to argue and things escalate quickly. Mabel, Sophie’s aunt walks in and sends both men on their way. But she is giddy thinking both men are courting Sophie.
Later that evening Sophie’s man of affairs comes to see her with terrible news – the property that the orphanage leases has been lost by the owner in a card game and the new owner is going to tear the place down and build row houses. Sophie learns that the new owner is none other than Devlin and tells her man that she will handle it. She goes to see him and they strike a bargain – she will marry him and he will deed her the property and give a monthly donation, they seal the deal with a kiss. They break apart when someone screams and a small boy runs in the room. Nicholas is Devlin’s ward, but he looks like he could be his son, and when Sophie asks, Devlin is completely honest with her. Sophie tells Nicholas that she and Devlin will marry and promises to take him to visit the orphanage. Devlin then informs Sophie that they will marry within the month.
Sophie returns home to find Tina, another maid in the Crowley residence waiting to see her – Tina tells her that Jane has disappeared and she is worried – what Sophie doesn’t know is that Tina talked to Jane before she left and knows who the killer is and has tried to blackmail him – Tina asks if Sophie has heard from her and Sophie then asks her butler if she has gotten any mail – it seems like her mail for the last couple of weeks has disappeared. She promises Tina she will look into Jane’s disappearance. When she goes to pick up Nicholas, she asks Devlin if he can get her an invite to the Crowley’s house party – at first he refuses, the parties are not suitable for innocents – but when she tells him why, he agrees, but insists on going with her.
Tina and her fiancée Robbie meet with the killer and get what he promised them…
That night at the opera Sophie learns that Devlin has sent their engagement announcement to the paper – before she has told her family. They encounter his Aunt, the dowager Marchioness of Brampton, who clearly hates Devlin. And then her brother shows up unexpectantly and overhears, he punches Devlin and refuses to let Sophie marry him. Sophie has had enough for one night and tells Devlin to call on her tomorrow. Mabel fills Sophie in on Devlin’s family and her heart softens towards him. When the butler brings Sophie her mail, she learns that their footman was murdered the night before and when she learns that he too worked for the Crowley’s she is sure there is something nefarious going on. She decides to call on the Crowley’s and runs into Devlin as she is leaving. She tries to get him to leave, but when he hears where she is going, he insists on going with her. They leave the Crowley’s with more questions than answers. They chat on the ride back and Devlin kisses her – when they return to her home, her brother opens the carriage door and grabs her – this time Devlin punches him – they move into the house and the two men have at it – Sophie calls for her doctor friend and Devlin is upset to realize that Alec McGuiness is in love with Sophie – Daniel (her brother) thinks that it is hilarious that the rake is falling for his sister and that he thinks that he can actually control her – the two men form a truce.
When Sophie arrives at the Crowley’s, she learns that Jane and Tina are dead. Even more disturbing, it seems like someone is trying to frame Devlin for the murders. She begs him to speak to his aunt, believing that she can clear things up, but Devlin refuses. They make love and Sophie knows she is lost, but Devlin makes it clear that he can never love her. She is hurt, but accepts that he never made any promises to her and tries to shut off her feelings. Devlin is sorry that he hurt her and doesn’t like this new cold Sophie, but before they can work things out Devlin is called away with an emergency.
Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands and ends up in the villains hands instead. Can Devlin find her before it’s too late? Will he be able to tell her that he was wrong to push her away and that he loves her?
This was a very good book with a very good mystery and several twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. And there was a huge OMG moment when the real villain was revealed. The book is well written, flows great, had somewhat steamy love scenes, wonderful secondary characters, a truly awesome declaration scene and a very hard won HEA.
I would be happy to recommend this book and will definitely be looking out for future books by this author – I didn’t give the book 5 stars because there were some minor inconsistencies in the story, some modern verbiage and a major title flub at the end of the book – but nothing that ruins the flow or the story.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
The Devilish Duke is my first book by Maddison Michaels, I look forward to reading many more. Ms. Michaels has delivered a book that is well-written and loaded it with amazing, lovable characters. Sophie has dedicated herself to teaching and training the young people at the orphanage she helps with. Devlin has been told he must marry by the queen if she is to endorse a business plan. Sophie and Devlin’s story is packed with drama, humor, suspense, action and sexy bits. I enjoyed every page of this book and hope to read more of Maddison Michaels’ books soon. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received this book from NetGalley for a honest review. This was a wonderful story with the two Mc trying to resist being in love. The Devil Duke as he is called has quite a reputation but is strangely attracted to Sophie. Sophie just wants to obtain funds for her charity to keep the orphanage afloat. This story had some mystery with lost of twist and turn. Fabulous read.
This is the first book of a new to me author. I loved the chemistry between the heroine, Sophie, and the hero Devlin. I also enjoyed the mystery in the story. I can’t wait to read more of her books!
4 1/2 stars
Starring Devlin Markham, the notorious “Devil Duke” of Huntington and Lady Sophie Wolcott.
Okay, first chapter had me laughing!! And I was picturing Devlin as Crocodile Dundee with his big knife trying to get Sophie free of the bushes…. so funny!!
Sophie is a confirmed spinster. Her father was a philanderer and Sophie saw the heartache that caused her mother, so she’s determined not to fall in love or marry a rake. Sophie spends her time on her charity work and that’s enough to make her happy. She’s a very strong heroine who knows what she wants and is a little tigress when it comes to defending those she loves. She was such a little dynamo. I love how men are always fighting for her… she’s always trying to break up.
Devlin was such a yummy hero. Every time he was on the page he made my toes curl. When it comes to love, Devlin believes in it, but has seen the heartache that comes with it… so it’s something he wants to avoid at all cost. But the best rakes fall the hardest, and Devlin can’t help feeling possessive over Sophie and wanting to keep her safe always. Love will fall at his feet… literally… he just has to push his fears aside and let it consume him, before it’s too late.
Devlin needs to marry Sophie in order to advanced in a business venture, and he’s not above blackmailing her to get an acceptance to his proposal. Sophie sees the benefits of being married to a Duke… access to his bank account and owning the building that houses her orphanage are the things Devlin are dangling before her eyes. They each expect certain things from each other and their soon to be nuptials… everything that is, except for love. Together Devlin and Sophie are a wonderful heat… these two were sparks upon the page. They will soon find out that falling in love is less dangerous than an impending enemy that is set to destroy Devlin’s name.
By the way… Nicholas, Devlin’s ward, added a fun comic relief. His view on marriage “hurting” had me chuckling.
This is my second Maddison Michaels story that I’ve read and I absolutely loved it. She’s on my “New Favorite Authors of 2019” list and so glad I “discovered” her. I have a feeling I’m going to be making a space for her on my keeper shelf.
This is book #1 in the Saints and Scoundrels series… great start!! This story was gifted to me. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My star system:
4 1/2 stars: Book was great… loved the characters…. made me cry in some parts…. will definitely be re-reading this story.
Read more books in this series! They will not let you put them down!
M.M. – you wowed me with the characters! I love the orphanage of the 1800’s – sad story but oh, so true. You made it hard to put the book down.
Loved it!!! On to book two!
This is an amazing debut, I fell in love with Devlin Markham, Devil Duke of Huntington from the moment I met him when the charming Lady Sophie Wolcott fell from a tree and made her acquaintance with him and here starts a journey with suspense, fabulous banter and a slow and steady sensual pull from two people who never meant to fall in love, do yourself a favour pick this one up and have a very enjoyable time and trip back to Victorian England you will not be sorry.
Lady Sophie is single and four and twenty some would say on the shelf already and she is happy to stay that way, after the man that she felt she loved married someone else, her father was a rake and broke her mother’s heart and so Sophie throws all of her energy into the orphanage where she helps orphans learn to read and acquire positions. But meeting the Devil Duke is about to upend her life in many ways and when she is convinced to marry Devlin to save the orphanage and mystery abounds regarding one of her charges from the orphanage he is the man to turn to.
Devlin is a man that goes out and gets what he wants in life, he has secrets that have been kept for many years and has the worst reputation in the Ton as a rake, and he in in trade would you believe and when he wants Queen Victoria to sign off on a deal her answer is get married first. There is one woman that has taken his interest after meeting her in a situation not normal for Ladies of the ton but their easy banter makes him think that he could live with her, plan settled he is out to get her anyway he can, never realizing what will happen with his emotions.
This is a fast paced incredibly good story one that I fell into from page one MS Michaels has written a story that bought Devlin and Sophie to life on the pages as well as the other characters, the mystery, the sensual pull and the dialogue, murderers after revenge their business marriage starts to change and seeing Devlin cope when Sophie stands up to him, oh my what a story I loved it and truly I highly recommend this one. Thank you MS Michaels this one is a keeper and I do hope there are many more to come.
I really enjoyed this one. A strong, female lead. An equally strong, clever male counterpart. Both disdain marriage and have trouble opening their hearts, both learn their bodies and hearts sometimes have very different ideas from their heads. Witty and very fun clashes of wills between the characters. Also, a nice bit of intrigue – not a straight, whisk-you-away romance. More twists and turns, some darkness, and the light of love.
Was really a good book.
I was expecting a simple romance. This book was much more. There is mystery and action. The characters are well done. The heroine is confident and honest. She doesn’t hide what she is thinking (which is refreshing In this genre). There is a mystery with danger and suspense. The book was very enjoyable. I am so glad this showed up in my Bookbub daily deals!
I have not enjoyed a book this much in ages! This book was absolutely enthralling! It was full of romance, action and suspense! It played with my emotions and shocked me quite a few times with it’s twists. VERY well written, VERY complex plot, moved at a beautiful pace, great characters that are wonderfully developed and interesting. This book is guaranteed to have you glued to it right up until the end. LOVED IT!!!!!
These two are a ton of fun together. Sophie is spirited, sassy, and not only willing to stand up for herself but for Devlin too. Which makes her all the more attractive to him. Devlin embraces his “devil” moniker but he isn’t truly as bad as they make him out to be. Instead he’s got some pretty big walls thanks to an awful childhood and it will take a strong woman to get past them. Lucky for him, Sophie is up to the challenge.
I do kinda wish there had been more (or maybe better) clues about who the killer was so the reader had a better chance of figuring it out. It was tied up nicely, with a logical motive, a clever villain, and an exciting ending. But I felt like I was given details only as I needed them so there was little chance of guessing what would happen ahead of time. That isn’t necessarily bad but it could be frustrating for those who like to be more involved in solving the whodunit.
I read somewhere that Michaels is a new author but she proves herself to be quite the writer. Nicely paced, great characters, excitement, romance, danger … she brings it all and does it well. I’m definitely going to keep my eye on her – I think she’s got a great future ahead of her!
*** I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. ***
I enjoyed the writing. There is great chemistry between Devlin and Sophie; you get a good taste of the life of the ton as well as the servants; and I really enjoyed the twists of the mystery. I did not see the ending coming. Eagerly looking forward to more of Ms. Michaels books.
What a tremendously amazing book! I really can’t begin to praise this book enough! This book is incredibly well written and had me hooked from the very beginning… well the cover to be honest! The characters are fantastic! There are many characters and they all seem so real! Sophie and Devlin are completely captivating characters. I loved them both. The story is perfectly paced, easy to follow and unpredictable! There were many parts that had me laughing, and the writting was so vivid that I felt what the characters were feeling throughout the entire book. I wish I could give more than 5 stars… Really, I don’t want to give anything away, it’s definately a story you need to read for yourself!
