When a rake beyond redemption…
A walking scandal surviving on little more than wits, whisky, and wicked skills in the bedchamber, Benedict Chatham, the new Marquess of Rutherford, is at the end of his rope. Deeply in debt and down to his last farthing, he must marry nothing short of an absolute fortune, or risk utter ruin.
Must marry for money…
Enter Miss Charlotte Lancaster, unfashionably tall … unfashionably tall heiress to just such a fortune and a clumsy, redheaded disaster in her five London seasons. While she dreams of leaving England for a life of trade in America, her father schemes to trade her dowry for a title—and Marchioness of Rutherford will do nicely. Charlotte wants her independence, not a husband, and certainly not a disreputable devil who renders her weak and wobbly with a single scorching glance. But she’s a practical sort, and a year with the devil might buy her freedom … provided she can resist his seductive charms. That shouldn’t prove a problem, for he could not possibly want someone like her, and the feeling is mutual. Really. It is.
Love grows in the most unexpected places…
When her father demands a startling price for his daughter’s hand—one year of fidelity and sobriety—Chatham must change his libertine ways … at least temporarily. And when he does, Charlotte begins to see him in a new light—not as the scandalous charmer she married, but as the husband she just might adore.

Original only because I haven’t read yet where the father lays out just what the hero must do in order to get his daughter’s dowry. Good going! And the heroine is so very endearing; you can’t help by enjoy her.
Becomes a real love story of what comes first, what to do second, why not third (Sorry, it’s not Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on first” this time.)
A beautiful, passionate story of a hollow and utterly broken man, saved by the love of a good woman. Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review. I also purchased a copy because Eliza Braden is one of my favorite writers.
First, WOW, awesome cover!!! And yes, that is totally Benedict Chatham! We’ve seen Chatham in the three previous books of this series, and have been so anxious to read his story. This is a beautiful love story between Chatham and Charlotte, although there is definitely not much love between them at the beginning, being an arranged marriage. So beautiful how they learn to work together and support each other, and gradually fall deeply in love. Plenty of steam too, but the LOVE is the main focus
Elisa Braden is an amazing author, and for those who have not read her books, it’s a must that you give her a try. Again, this is her fourth book, and they just get better and better!
Absolutely loved this!
Super main characters with a good supporting cast, fabulous story, lovely narration.
I just loved how Charlotte came back from total despair at having to marry Benedict Chatham, which her father arranged, and how she not only copes but makes it into a totally successful situation/marriage together with her now sober and hard working Marquess.
I listened to the audiobook version and my voluntary and unbiased review is recorded above.
Starring Benedict Chatham, Marquess of Rutherford and Miss Charlotte Lancaster. Forced marriage trope.
I absolutely loooooooooved this book!! Oh my heart, I am totally ugly crying AF and I don’t even care. So. Much. Feels!!
Even though Charlotte was taller than the average debutante and a social klutz… she was a very strong heroine. I loved how resilient, independent, and intelligent she was. She was definitely a go-getter. I love that when she is dropped into a situation she makes the best of what she has…. and she tackles each project with enthusiasm and heart. She had such a wonderful influence on Chatham… definitely the light in his darkness.
Chatham was such a beautifully broken hero who totally needed redemption. Ah the best kind!! Everyone he has ever loved has left him cynical and afraid to trust his heart. He so needed someone like Charlotte, who saw him as a man and not a title. I loved that even when he was trying to be emotionally detached from her, his heart and his gazes kept traveling back to Charlotte. Aw man he was delicious!!
These two blossomed together and it was beautiful. Charlotte and Chatham are going on my “All Time Favorite Couples” list. They totally gave me all the feels. And they were pretty hot and steamy too!! The cellar scene had me fanning myself!!
This is book 4 in the Rescued from Ruin Series. I can not wait to read the rest of the stories. I absolutely love Elisa Braden. She is firmly on my keeper shelf. She writes so beautifully and I love getting lost in her world.
My star rating: 5 stars
Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were amazing. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!
fun to read and the characters actually grow with the story
Maybe 2.5 stars
I enjoy historical fictions but I had a hard time finishing this one. Actually I had a hard time starting it. I tried three different times.
It was your basic rich, unattractive heiress and a sexy scandalous rake. Misunderstandings and falling slowly in love with one another. And every thing working out perfectly. Maybe it was just me.
King of Smirks and Snarkiness!
Only In It For The Money?
Miss Charlotte Lancaster, is firmly a bluestocking, and after five seasons of lackluster looking for a ton husband, has given up. She’s too tall, too redheaded, too freckled, too clumsy, and much too opinionated, outspoken, and smart!
Her wealthy financier American father, coerces her to marry a peer in an arranged marriage, because he wants a title for his grandchildren.
Never mind that Dad must finance the whole thing because the man in question, Benedict Chatham, the New Marquess of Rutherford, is a debauched rakehell and womanizer of the worst kind, as well as an alcoholic. And dead broke.
For the kingly sum of 200,000 pounds sterling, he will toe the line for a year, and produce a male heir!
Thank goodness the man is handsome to a fault, and maybe underneath he’s really a decent guy, too. His smirks, snarkiness, and intelligence know no bounds, however, his male magnitude makes up for all of it!
An iron clad contract keeps the stud’s wandering libido in check. No drinking, no womanizing, and dad wants a grandchild, asap!
Loved this ADULT Romance! Many of the dialogue exchanges are hilarious!
Started with this book on Book Bub and am now going through the series. Love it! Really enjoy how the characters overlap in different books.
I loved this story. Charlotte on the shelf after 5th season. Chatham drunkard, sells his sexual favors to women. He Makes a marriage pack with Charlotte father for money. The Marquess has met his match in Charlotte who is horrified by the agreement. Tall redheaded and freckled she believes she’s unattractive but Chatham is oddly attracted to her. The Story Begins ENJOY
The main female character is quite an independent strong minded individual. The male character has a past history of parents who failed him when he was a child. Together they make for a very interesting couple.
Good read.
This was part of a stand-a-lone series that i have really enjoyed and look forward to reading, and even though they can be read on their own it is great to see previous characters mentioned, it’s like visiting old friends. There was some steamy scenes but not too over board. I would recommend.
Good romantic story
I’ve never read this author before but I loved it. I will definitely try a few more!
One of the best Regency romances I have read in a long time. Memorable characters that you care about as well as the most evil woman ever. I would enjoy reading this book again.
Total enjoyment!
Lovely story, It made me cry and laugh. A Lovely way to relax.
