Destiny Ford is the pseudonym for USA Today best-selling author Angela Corbett. The Devil Drinks Coffee is the first book in Destiny Ford’s Kate Saxee Mystery series. I found it wonderfully entertaining. After 7 years Kate Saxee moves back to the small Utah town she grew up in. She’s a reporter and editor at the local paper. She reports on the drowning of a teenage girl that’s viewed as an accident. Kate has a different point of view starting with the grew was out swimming at 3:00 in the morning. I found this to be a fun read, very entertaining.
A charming and entertaining blend of mystery, suspense, and humor. Kate is quirky, funny, sassy and quite relatable. With more questions than answers about a dead girl, a problematic Mom, two eligible, attractive men trying to assist her, and being the talk of the town, she more than has her hands full. A fun and enjoyable read.
Wonderful! I laughed to tears but the intensity of the mystery and Kate’s investigation was great. I bought The Devil Drinks Coffee because it was highly recommended by friends on one of Shelly Fredman’s Facebook pages and we share a taste for well written none traditional amateur mysteries. The humor of the book balances the serious subject. Most of the humor of the novel comes from three things, what happen to Kate, the way the small town watches every move and gossip blows everything out of proportion, and what happens to Kate’s mother. I loved discovering that many of the implausible things that happened to Kate’s mother really happened to Angela Corbett’s (Destiny Ford) mother. Kate’s naivety is a little overdone but I know people like that so I can deal with it. For good or ill, the characters are wonderful! I haven’t explained this well, but this book belongs in the TBR of every reader of light or cozy suspense. Thanks for the recommendation guys! It was awesome.
Kate Saxee couldn’t wait to get out of her hometown when she was a teenager, but when she was offered the job as editor of the weekly newspaper, she couldn’t resist! She is drawn to investigate the “accidental” death of a high school senior who left town a few months ago. No one was aware that the girl was back until her body turned up in a nearby lake. When a gorgeous stranger helps get Kate into the crime scene and asks her to work with him, she can’t refuse; it is apparent he has resources the newspaper doesn’t have, as well as a body that won’t quit. Things get really tense when the governor’s name gets tossed into the mix.
This is a great book. Kate is an ideal sleuth and reporter. She is from the small town, but moved away for some time only to come back. After time away, she now sees through the polite veneer of the Mormon townspeople and their hypocritcal standards and values. The characters are compelling and very rounded. Dylan, the fascinating rich politician; Hawke, the bad boy superhero; and Spence, the boy next good boss/friend and all seem to be in some tangled form of love with Kate. There is also Officer Bobby, the overweight cop, unwilling to do his job. Taking up Officer Bobby’s slack on the job, Kate investigates the case of a murdered teenage girl as someone tries to stop her from discovering the truth. With the help of all the men protecting her and her crazy (and accident prone) mother defending her she might just figure out the case despite someone coming after her as well as all the saccharine society Mormon women trying to marry her off.
Janet Evanovich has met her match with Destiny Ford aka Angela Corbett. Hot men, triangle. murder and mayhem. Stephanie move over you have competition.
This was a fun, easy to read book.
Didn’t even finish it. Reads more like a high school homework project.
Enjoyed the first book in the series. Looking forward to reading the next!
Great story, very funny, kept your interest
Really liked this book. It was an interesting read. Characters are very likeable and fun. Would read next one
This was a fun read.
OK, as book one in this series – which ended up NOT a series – I was entertained enough by the characters and feisty female lead that I bought book 2. What’s wrong? There are overarching romantic elements that are unresolved and she stopped the series. You want to alienate me as a reader, that’s the second best way to do it. Clean, cozy mystery but don’t waste your time as the underlying character plot lines are left hanging. Regardless of what name the author uses I will never read another book by her.
