There can only be one reason for the proud Duke of Alvan’s proposed visit to Audley Park. He means to offer for Lord Overton’s beautiful daughter, Thomasina, thus saving the family’s waning fortune. In the midst of the … waning fortune. In the midst of the hectic preparations for his arrival, Overton’s least marriageable daughter Charlotte remembers to collect her young brothers from school for the holidays.
When fog forces them to spend the night at the Hart Inn, they are astonished to find the house deserted, save for one other enigmatic traveler who deals most capably with armed intruders. Drawn to their unconventional new friend, Charlotte enlists his help to solve the mystery.
Amidst the upheaval of the duke’s visit, to say nothing of the chaos caused by Charlotte’s unmanageable pet terrier, the Hart becomes the focus of nefarious doings, kidnappings, and romantic entanglements. A DUKE FINDS LOVE
A neglected daughter on the shelf is ignored for her worth as nothing more than the reliable help. Then an adventure with a lonely Duke changes her life. Now he has to convince her she’s the one he wants and not her sister. An empty inn, kidnapping, thieves and a romantic wedding. I read this nonstop in one afternoon.
A charming Regency tale that sets the stage for marriage and hijinks in the English countryside. It was exactly the relaxing story I needed this weekend and, of course, there was the HEA the characters (and the reader) deserved.
Love this book and the whole series is excellent

My review :
When the unmarriageable sister meets her sibling’s potential groom and sparks fly …
Today is a great reading day as I managed to read two new-to-me authors, sure I have seen their books pass by but I was always already in another story.
This one is no new release but the cover and blurb caught, plus the bargain price.
And I am glad I strayed a bit from my reading list.
Mrs Mary Lancaster here delivers a wonderful story of two people overlooked by everyone and seen for only what the viewers want.
Charlotte is the middle daughter, the one dismissed from the marriage mart because of an illness as a child, a bit of stammer and a blunt propensity to openness.
She might not have the label of diamond of the first water, yet she is so much more, managing everything, even more talented than her sisters but having to hide it to not overshadow their own worth.
Still she is the liveliest, the funniest of the lot as she does not take herself seriously.
And after years to have been overlooked, it has become a second nature to bland with the background, until a man stirs feelings she never felt.
Alexander has lived his whole life with the weight of his title and wealth, always seen for it and not for the man he is.
Used to be used.
So when he decided he was time he did his duty for his legacy, he never expected to meet a less than perfect Miss, still so ideal from him because she makes him smile and like him she is not whom she appears to be.
I love a man when he recognizes his fault and tries to make up for them.
And despite his title, he knows he has too because it is not his rank in society which will win his lady back.
This tale was so very refreshing with a no-fear miss and an out-of-water peer, and full of life side characters. It is a story of a woman finding her voice after years of silence, she could have been a Cinderella but in some way she was compliant in her circumstances until a man shows her she was worth so much more than she expected for her.
5 stars

There’s a sincerity to the male point of view in this story that is a breath of fresh air. It’s a sweet Regency romance that feels fresh and new.
Of brooding duke and hidden gems
Mary Lancaster’s regency romance hits all the high points as Charlotte, the overlooked “ugly duckling” middle daughter crosses paths with the Duke of Alvan, who is visiting – and supposedly courting – Thomasina, the family’s prized princess. The whole mercenary marriage mart of English nobility is skewered in this romance complicated by frenemies, family foibles, and misunderstandings upon mistaken intentions, until nothing remains but to give in to HEA. Quite a satisfying read for Regency fans.
I loved how Charlotte was open to be herself. Alvan seems cold until he’s around Charlotte, she’s the only one who can see who he really is. I really enjoyed watching them fall in love in spite of themselves!
Another great series off to a good start. Ms Lancaster creates sympathetic characters with real personalities, and her plots avoid contrivance and excessive coincidence. Her characters actually talk to one another rather than leap to conclusions. Yay! There is charm, affection, humor, and genuine feeling in the stories.
Miss Charlotte Maybury loves to organise and look after her family. She knows she is the one who will never marry because her sisters are so much more beautiful than her. Her parents need the money a good match will bring. Luckily her eldest sister has attracted the attention of a Duke.
Alexander Moore, Duke of Alvan knows it’s time he married. He just needs the woman to be tolerable enough to live with. That is why he is going to visit the family home of a young lady he met in London.
A mystery on a foggy night will bring danger and excitement. The lives of those involved will never be quite the same again.
The families of both of our lead characters play very important roles in this story.
Lots of fun and a sweet romance.
I loved it.
A wonderful story of two people who were not supposed to meet, at least not as they did. Alvan and Charlotte, a young duke and a lady who is the “less than” middle sister in a large family, meet over a mystery. It is during this unsolved situation while traveling, that Charlotte and her entertaining younger brothers, along with their rambunctious dog, begin their acquaintance with a helpful stranger.
Upon their return home, Charlotte and siblings are introduced to a visitor who has arrived to meet her older sister for negotiations in an arranged marriage. Their ‘helpful stranger’ is a duke. While the older sister may be a diamond of the first water, it is Charlotte that has Alvan’s attention.
The plot thickens as there are past conflicts in Alvin’s life and current villains who wish to harm those around him. Charlotte is an adventurous sort, and becomes embroiled in the intrigue all the while falling for the duke. But is she willing to go after her sister’s intended? Will they survive their travails?
Terrific story from beginning to end, and I really hope this is the start of a long series as the cast of supporting characters were entertaining as well. I highly recommend it!
Let me just start by saying, I loved the 1st book in the new Unmarriageable Series and what a way to start!!I I was sad when the Blackhaven Brides Series came to an end because I loved them all (we do get to revisit people/places from previous books) but this is going to be another one of Mary Lancaster’s wonderful group of stories. Charlotte “Charlie” Maybury and Alexander Moore, the 7th Duke of Alvan are perfect together – their love of adventure, their special connection and the witty bantering makes them so lovable as a couple. I am already chomping at the bit for the 2nd book in the series and am thinking about who will be the main characters. I highly recommend this series to all historical romance readers – I hope you will love it as much as I did!
Charlotte the plain and practical daughter was all but passed over for her sisters, which her parents were trying to marry off to avoided financial troubles. When Charlotte meets Mr. Alexander at an inn she is quite taken with him not knowing that this is the Duke of Alvin whole is supposed to ask for her sisters hand in marriage. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. I loved all the characters and especially Spring. This story had a little bit of everything, mystery, romance, laughter. It was fun to read this new series and even some characters from the Blackhaven series. I definitely recommend this one and can’t wait fir the next in the series!
A consummate storyteller, Mary Lancaster begins a new series, which if this book is any indication, will be as wonderful as the Blackhaven books!! Alexander, the Duke of Alvan is on his way to visit Audley Park and Charlotte just knows it is because of her beautiful sister Thomasina. I mean, she is overshadowed by her sisters and it seems her family is only focused on marriage for them and leaving her out!
But fate steps in and Charlotte has to go pick her brothers up from school and ends up at the Hart Inn, due to the foggy weather. But what do they find? Only one other traveler and otherwise the Inn is deserted!! She enlists help from the stranger to figure out were everyone else is and combined with the antics of her adorable dog Spring, a romance begins to form between them.
Of course the stranger is the aforementioned Duke. But she does not realize that until later when he arrives at her home!!
I loved these two and could not turn the pages fast enough. It left me with a sign and warmed my heart. Prepare to be enchanted and I cannot wait for the next book in this series!!
What a wonderful adventure, along with mystery, a wonderful family in search of marriage for their two most attractive daughters, a house full of sons and an overlooked dutiful daughter that takes on the responsibility of running the family. Little does it seem that Charlotte is given any chance of finding love for herself, as her two sisters are given every opportunity at finding a titled husband. Mary Lancaster has provided a wonderful journey that will make you want to cheer for the Duke and Charlotte at every turn. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
