A homeless man. Violently strangled. No leads. Except his past.#5 Amazon bestseller Contemporary British Fiction #26 bestseller crime fiction #26 bestseller mystery action fiction (6/26/20)An outsider himself, DS George Cross is drawn to this case. The discovery of the dead man’s connection to an old cold case then pulls Cross in further. Convinced this is where the answer to the murder lies, he … where the answer to the murder lies, he sets about solving another that someone has spent the past fifteen years thinking they’ve got away with.
Cross’ relentless obsession with logic, detail and patterns is what makes him so irritatingly brilliant. It doesn’t exactly make him popular with colleagues or his superiors, though. He has numerous enemies in the force wanting to see him fail.
Red flags are soon raised as suspicious inconsistencies and errors in the original detective’s investigation come to light. Now retired, this ex-cop has powerful friends in the force and a long-standing dislike of Cross.
Set in picturesque Bristol in the Southwest of England, it’s not long before the city reveals its dark underbelly, in a case of intriguing twists and turns whose result astonishes even those involved.
Difficult and awkward, maybe. But Cross has the best conviction rate in Avon & Somerset Police. By far. Will this case put an end to that?

Enjoyed very much. Went thru various characters as the murderer before I could see who actually did it.
Intriguing police procedural with a fascinating detective.
Looking forward to his new book
A lovely detective story with good plotting and the detective with aspergers has the perfectionism to avoid every imperfect solution.
Very entertaining read.
The protagonist appears to be on the autism spectrum and the book spends a lot of time explaining his behavior.
Easy to read and the characters are well sketched. I enjoyed the mystery and how the story was told.
Very convoluted story line. All questions answered by the end of the book. Highly recommend
DS Cross is a British Colombo with some added issues as a result of Asperger’s Syndrome. Along with his unwilling sidekick, a young, ambitious black woman who wants to become a star in police work, their breaking a difficult case wide open based upon Cross’ lack of empathy is an entertaining and even at times funny read. Not a page turner, but you stay with it to see what happens next. Thoroughly, entertaining1
The book was easy to read and engaging. The plot and characters were well developed. A surprise ending!
This book is about a detective with Aspbergers Syndrome. He is very methodical but his odd habits drive others to distraction. He is able to link 2 separate crimes because they happened in one family. The wife dies by homicide 15 years prior. The husband becomes homeless several years after his wife dies because he is unable to cope with her death. The detective discovers the original detective on the case never followed up on several leads and the case went cold. He discovers the old detective has a connection to the suspect. He is the adopted son of the old detective. He is an orphan who is the only survivor of a car accident the dentist wife was in. When the husband finds new evidence, he confronts the old detective. The son kills the husband.
I loved It!! It’s one of those books that keep you wanting to know what”s going to happen next.
Monk in England. If you are a fan of Monk you will be amused to find he has an English counterpart. The book gets leggy and could have wrapped up a few chapters earlier. But it does have a real surprising ending. Going to try the author’s next book to see how the character win another one
Not your average mystery novel. Looking forward to the sequel.
Interesting main character and the slow, deliberate pace of the writing fit the essence of this British mystery.
For those who love police procedural whodunits-add this one to your repertoire
Cross is unique as an investigator- dogmatic-not easily or more accurately never swayed by feelings or gut instinct. He’s got Aspergers -and his talent for unraveling sequences is presented in a matter of fact and logical way -He is an original character.-and an enigma to his colleagues. Enjoy-
Really enjoyed this book had some twists
Very weird.
Det. Cross is a most unusual detective. The Asperger’s symptoms, those very personality traits that make him extremely annoying, are they very qualities that make him a terrific detective. Lots of twists and turns, and some humor in his very literal interpretations of day to day conversations.
Different and original. Enjoyed it very much!
