An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post). Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody–“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”–discovers that a night watchman at the museum has … night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).
There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .
From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

All of the books in the Amelia Peabody series are fantastic. Have read the entire series several times!
Favorite author, love anything she writes. Has mystery, humor, humor, archeology
Not my favorite Amelia Peabody mystery but if you’re a fan, you should read it.
I’ve read the entire series of Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters… and they are all exceptional. She is a cross between Miss Marple and Lara Croft… funny, pushy, stubborn and insightful (except about herself)…. and she’s in love. But, her love interest is worse than she is… so tho they are together for many, many years working as archaeologists ….together and apart… their life is never smooth sailing….and the bumps are what make these books so wonderful!
I love all of the Amelia Peabody Emerson mysteries. This is a truly talented author who makes a time, a place, and wonderful characters come alive.
It was more of a chore reading to get to the plot, not sure I’ll finish it.
I enjoyed the relationships between characters a lot, Ramses is a hoot.
The characters are fun and the storylines entertaining.
Elizabeth Peters was a wonderful writer. always featured strong women characters in unusual circumstances i.e. an archeologist or a museum curator, etc.
Elizabeth Peters never disappoints.
I read this book in hardcover years ago when I read the whole series. Loved all the characters and laughed my way through them. Got this version to reread.
The author’s excellent background in Egyptology makes this read both informative and fascinating and the story line is so compelling that you just have to go on and read the successive books that take the archeologists’ family through the Second World War! I highly recommend this book!
Peabody and Emerson are a formidable yet adorable pair, and Ramses their improbably precocious son is hilarious! This is a great mystery with a completely surprising ending. Loved it! Elizabeth Peters has done it again!!
I love the whole Amelia Peabody series. She is funny and clever. Very entertaining!
After the first 30 pages I was totally bored. The author gets an A for creative writing and a D for holding the reader’s attention.
I have read all the Egyptian mysteries by Elizabeth Peters over the years. I can read them over and over. The characters are larger than life, especially Emerson. Emelia and Ramses are wonderful. I highly recommend this and all Elizabeth Peters mysteries to all.
Well written, fun and funny!
This whole series is just great and as you move through the series thebwriting becomes more detailed. Loved the character development. Read it all
