An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post). Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody–“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”–discovers that a night watchman at the museum has … night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).
There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .
From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Another great adventure with Peabody and family.
wonderful book.. I have read all of the books in the series.
These books just make me happy. The whole series puts me in the historical settings that enable me to actively imagine being there
As usual another well written novel about Amelia and Emerson. Don’t know why a movie had not been made of any of her books. All are excellent.
Love historic novels
I love Amelia! I have completed the entire series several times over the years and have enjoyed watching Ramses grow up. The characters are entertaining, especially those in Egypt, and the plots are entertaining. Emerson is larger than life and he and Amelia have had quite a busy life over the course of the years. Having to try to keep up with the young Ramses makes it easy to understand why they only had one child!
I really wasn’t a fan of the Victorian literary devices or the Emerson’s. There were some interesting Egyptian facts included but the mystery was confusingly administered and so buried in the double entendres of the romantic liaisons on the protagonists that the book dragged on and on. I won’t be joining the Emerson’s on any other adventures.
I love this author. I miss her.
I love Elizabeth Peters’ “Amelia Peabody” books. Egyptology has always intrigued me, and her books feed my need.
Enjoyed the entire series. One of the best series Imhave read.
love all these books have read them all
Elizabeth Peters wrote great books! I love her Amanda Peabody series, as well as Vicky Bliss. But Amanda Peabody–you also get a chance to learn about some Egyptian history, plus the way of life at the turn of the century where these are based. So sorry she has passed away–she left some things undone!
I Annie hooked on Amelia Peabody!!
Elizabeth Peters is my favorite author. I loved all her mystery novels and her historical books on Egypt were great.
Entire series is well worth the time to read it.
I love Elizabeth Peter’s books. The characters are wonderful and the stories take place in the early part of the 1900s so the books are a little different from your modern day mysteries, not to mention the fact that both main characters Amelia and Emerson are archeologists and egyptologists. Would suggest one start the series with the first book and go from there. It is fun to watch their son Ramses grow from a precocious child to a pretty good sleuth in his own right.
Amalia Peabody is tons of fun, wish she was real
A fun read.
All books in this series are very good. Great characters.
This was a great book. I loved Emilia Peabody. She was so fun and her relationship with Emerson was so fun to read. I read this a second time because I have read the whole series and wanted to go back and enjoy them again. I highly recommend these books.
