An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post). Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody–“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”–discovers that a night watchman at the museum has … night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).
There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .
From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Strayed far away from the mystery with a lot of nonsense about family life. Disa ppointing.
Amelia Peabody never disappoints.
I have enjoyed every book I’ve read in this series!
Love this entire series. Great characters, great stories, well written, humorous, and very informative about early archialogical in Egypt. Though certainly fiction, the series enriched my subsequent visit to Egypt with knowledge of the culture, people, customs, etc.
Tedious and boring
Written on a higher level – fiction based on true historical information.
Amelia Peabody is one of my all-time favorite characters. The entire series is 5-star.
Peters is the BEST.
I enjoy the whole series with Amelia and her family.
The continuing Saga of Amelia and Emerson. If you love egyptology, even if you don’t.
There are the mysteries, bad guys, good guys and so much more.
Doesn’t matter if you read them in order, but it does help. You will enjoy the fun and adventure. Cheers
A typical Ellis Peters with a very strong female character who would have been as good today as she was back then! Love her odd husband and even odder son, Ramses. Makes one wish for a trip to the pyramids!
The narrative just grabs your attention and tickles the funny bone. Simultaneously you experience Amelia’s quaint Victorian attitude and her nontraditional education superemposed on the “real” world and it is hilarious. An excellent read from beginning to end.
Amelia is so spunky. This series of books brings a long ago Egypt alive and makes me want to walk into the book to see the sights in person and to join the adventures!
Every book in this series (Amelia Peabody) is awesome – mystery, funny, amazing characters and story plot
The Amelia Peabody series instantly became an all time favorite when I got this book. I have since read the entire series as well as starting other series by Elizabeth Peters. She is inventive, intelligent, and laugh out loud funny.
I love the heroine she is Mrs Piboby a English lady from her parasol to her walking boots but very independent feminist literate erudite she is after all a Egyptology and linguistic and now how to defend her self and her wonderful husband Emerson
Fun plot, but the writing is pretentious.
The entire Amelia Peabody series is great fun and one of my favorites. Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Michaels) was a wonderful writer and I highly recommend any/all of her books.
Very repetitious, characters not interesting, book meandered and went nowhere.
Love the characters!
