An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post). Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody–“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”–discovers that a night watchman at the museum has … night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).
There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .
From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Always a bit sillym but entertaining
I love all of the Amelia Peabody mysteries. A great series and very tongue-in-cheek.
this is a great mystery as are all of Peters books. A stay up all night to finish book.
This is about an Egyptologist during the early 1900’s. Much information about Ancient Egypt and their beliefs.
It’s Amelia Peabody! What more need be said?
I’ve read the entire Amelia Peabody series. Elizabeth Peters is one of my favorite authors.
I Love, love, love!! this series. Amelia and her crew never disappoint… Start with book one and enjoy. Actress Barbara Rosenblatt does an outstanding job bringing the characters to life in the audio series.
A fun series with a woman protagonist
LOVE the series.
Love Amelia, could read her adventures every night.
I love Ancient Egypt and the Archeology of that period. I devour books written in or about that topic. I’ve even written my own stories!
I love the Amelia Peabody series written by Elizabeth Peters. So far I’ve read 12 and am reading #13.
I invite you to join me!
Loved it; anything about the Peabody clan!
Love love love Elizabeth Peters!
Anything by Elizabeth Peters is fabulous!
Ah, the world of Emily Peabody Emerson! 🙂 It is a truly wonderful place to visit. Egypt, pyramids, mummies, and mysteries. And a child prodigy I wish we learned more of.
Charging in with her trusty parasol after some serious ratiocination, Mrs. Emerson always saves the day, in the most roundabout ways and sometimes needing rescue.
A delightful series full of interesting information on ancient Egypt.
Her books are all wonderful! And I’ve read everyone I could, and sometimes twice!! If you’re interested in ancient Egypt you’ll love her books!
I love the Amelia Peabody Emerson series. This one takes place in England rather than Egypt. Different, but still very good.
All of her books are good reads.
It’s Amelia Peabody Emerson to the rescue again as she tracks down the killers of a guard at the British Museum. Filled with the wonderful Radcliffe (NEVER CALL HIM THAT) Emerson and the extremely precocious Ramses Emerson and a troop of other characters you will not soon forget. Insanely funny and like no other family ever conceived. One of the great ones.
Another great book in the Amelia Peabody series! Fun read, interesting backdrop of early 20th century Egypt, and characters that you’ll fall in love with (particularly Peabody!).
