An Egyptologist investigates a death at the British Museum in this “charming” historical mystery by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Painted Queen (The Denver Post). Back in London after an archaeological dig, adventurous sleuth Amelia Peabody–“rather like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple all rolled into one”–discovers that a night watchman at the museum has … night watchman at the museum has perished in the shadow of a mummy case (The Washington Post Book World).
There are murmurings about an ancient curse, but a skeptical Amelia is determined to find an all-too-human killer. Soon, she’s balancing family demands, including the troubles of her precocious son, Ramses (aka Walter), with not just one unsolved crime, but two . . .
From a recipient of multiple honors including the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award, this murder mystery set in Victorian-era England is a witty, rollicking, and “deeply satisfying” romp (Entertainment Weekly) in a “jewel of a series” (The New York Times Book Review).

Love the whole series!!!
A solid english mystery, set in Egypt. Elizabeth Peters never disapoints. Amliea, Emerson and the “Children” are off on anther adventure.
I read this series beginning in the ’90s… you will get hooked! Love to see a strong woman in that setting and time.
The Peabody series of books are great. I love the character of Amelia Peabody and her entire family. The only one I wouldn’t recommend is the one that was not finished by Elizabeth Peters (finished by another author after her death).
Love the Amelia Peobody books and her tongue in cheek humor.
The flow of the writing was awkward and hard to read.
This series is worthwhile reading.
The Amelia Peabody series is a wonderfully entertaining set of books, I have read them all and some more than once. She wrote funny mysteries around a set of characters that seem like they were real people, I will miss there being any future books by this author, RIP Ms Mertz
Such a wonderful writer!
Fun, quirky characters. Read this author for years. Always go back and read again later.
The conclusion was not predictable, great for a mystery novel. The author is definitely fond of words using many one does not normally use. Fortunately I read it on the Kindle version and was easily able to get the meaning clarified. Great for building your vocabulary.
Too predictable and somewhat silly
Solid fun, old time character. Good mystery story, Noble protagonist’s, evil villains, history and atmosphere. Enjoy.
Love these books, start with the first one in the series. Crocodiles on the Sandbank. So much fun!
You will want to read everything by Peters. I promise!
Without a doubt, one of the best writers next to Agatha Christie! I’ve read everything Elizabeth Peters has written and I wish she was still here to write some more!
I loved reading all the adventures of the intrepid Amelia Peabody. Highly recommend them.
This book, like the entire Amelia Peabody series, whisks you away to a bygone time of dressing for dinner, ladies with parasols, British colonialism, and of course murder amongst the pyramids. These books are easy to read murder mysteries and closet bodice rippers. They are such fun.
I love her books. So sorry she is no longer with us.
I have enjoyed this and many of her other books in the Peabody series.
