Jack Winchester was a notorious hitman for a ruthless New Jersey crime family until a job went wrong, and he wound up serving time. Four years later, Jack is free and he wants out of the game, but his boss won’t let him go. Forced to take on one last job to make amends for what landed him in prison, he travels to the small town of Rockland Cove, Maine. There, he not only discovers that the target … discovers that the target and money have disappeared; he finds himself falling for a damaged woman, and befriending an unruly son left behind.
Under mounting pressure from his boss and local police—as well as the ghosts of his past—he must unravel the mystery and decide where his loyalties lie…before it’s too late.
Note: Even though there is a book 2. This is a full standalone novel with a complete ending.

While this book is based on a standard premise: bad guy gets out of prison, wants to turn over a new leaf, but is dragged back into the criminal life; Jon Mills paints his lead character, Jack, as no saint, nor as a degenarate sinner. Jack, a mob collector/hitman, has always kept to one moral code: no women or children. As far as I am concerned, the author missed a prime opportunity in character exposition when Jack is confronted by a man who was a youngster when he witnessed Jack killing his father. His statement “…you took mine (life) the day you killed my father” I felt cheated when Mr. Mills only alloted one paragraph of 7 short sentences to Jack’s thoughts on the matter.
The plotline was interesting, the Maine locale well researched and the action scenes were well scripted. All-in-all a pleasant read!
I could not get into this book after reading 25%.
whens book 2?
Loved it
A bit drawn out but, still worth the read
Great characters
Not a bad plot, but terribly written and edited.
Excellent first book of a series. Jon Mills characters have depth and are extremely well developed. Could not put down and will read entire series of 10 books. I enjoy Clancy, Grisham, and good fiction with interesting, well developed characters and Mills is right up there with them. Highest recommendation!
Good book, but was disappointed in the ending
Jack the main character is realistic and well-developed, as are the struggling motel owner and her typically disagreeable teenage son.
Jack has the reader rooting for him as he faces problems from his past as he attempts to rebuild his life.
Good entertainment
Somewhat difficult in the beginning, given the past crimes involved, but after skimming a lot of the story, it did get better and more interesting. Fight scenes are much too long for my taste, but ending was okay. I would actually rate 3.5 stars if that were possible, because of these complaints.
Great series, can’t stop reading! Love the main character!
Too violent for me.
Loved the book!!
Good read, I liked the main character in this one.
I loved it!!its so much fun when you get a book that you can’t put down! I will get more of your books for sure!
It’s a fast read. A bit cliched and predictable, but a fun read that kills time.
Good read
Decent first book for interesting character. There were some rough patches but worth a read.
