322 years after the apocalypse, the world has changed, but her people have not. Secrets, lies, and … not. Secrets, lies, and manipulations endure among a small group of survivors taking refuge on an island in the Northern Pacific.
No one knows what claimed so many lives over three centuries ago, and no one asks, except Ashley Wortham. She can feel the secrets all around her, begging to be uncovered.
But the nine elders who govern the island guard their secrets jealously. They believe the islanders know what they need to, and they hide their secrets behind a ruse of peace. But when Ashley, and her best friend Mason, go down the rabbit hole, no one is prepared for the truths they uncover. What will they do when they discover the downfall of humanity lies within their own island, deep inside the dead room?

I always feel bad when I review a book and state that it is not written brilliantly. I do not mean any disrespect. I don’t think the “the Lord of the Rings” was written brilliantly. It is a heck of a story, though. So it is with this book. It is a pretty easy book to read, but that does not detract from it being a good story. The author gives us a story with a couple of curve balls that we don’t see coming, and leaves us with a cliffhanger that we absolutely can’t leave be. It probably rates a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my estimation, and I will be getting the follow up novel.
This was a very interesting book with a different take for a post apocalyptic way of life. There is a part of the story that is more of a mystery. What really happened? And asking questions does not seem to be very healthy, especially when one goes searching and gets caught.
The basis for the story is a good one and I did enjoy it. I can not say that I couldn’t put it down. I was engaged in the story but I was not pulled in so much that I was part of it more like just an observer.
The characters were developed where you knew more about them at least the main players but not enough that I really cared. I like to see the characters more fleshed out than just surface information. As I said before, I was more an observer than being a part of the story.
Overall it was an enjoyable book and will read the next mainly because I hate being left hanging. I can only hope the second will not leave me hanging as much as the first book did.
This is an interesting take on the apocalypse. I enjoyed reading the book and do recommend it. I may need to read the next installment of the series, though.
The ending was something I never expected. I will be purchasing book 2
If you enjoy post-apocalyptic stories, this is one that you may enjoy. What can be more interesting than nano-bots who take on a life of their own, with no technology to eradicate them?
Possible passive spoilers!
An interesting dystopian story. Reminded me a bit of M Night Shyamalan’s The Village at the beginning, but it quickly took an even stranger turn. Well told! My only issue was the use of the word pyre for the funerals. It’s not truly a pyre unless there’s burning involved. I don’t know if this was intentional since we learn the Elders have essentially redacted much of the historical reading materials.
Copied straight from Webster’s dictionary website:
Definition of pyre
: a combustible heap for burning a dead body as a funeral rite; broadly : a pile of material to be burned a pyre of dead leaves
Not a bad idea. It should have been written 100 later, say 2125.
I also read the second, also OK but stretching it. It should have been written 100 later, since right now we simply don’t have the capability to build such large vessels.
The third and last was awful – mainly because the science in it was absolutely ridiculous and not at all thought out. To begin with, NOBODY expects man-made machinery to actually RUN CONTINUALLY for 350 years!! Duh.
Sooo, why didn’t the ‘wise’ people in charge IMMEDIATELY begin working our how to reclaim the Earth? Why wait for 350 years before doing anything?
Foolish, and it ruined the story.
I knew when I started this book that it was Number 1 in a series and that it would never have an ending. However, it has a interesting premise and the characters and the story are captivating. I am hoping the next book in the series, Dead World is a good. If not I may never see the end of this series.
Good start on an interesting story. I already bought book 2!
This is a very easy book to read. Plot is unpredictable. I finished it in 2 days and bout the next 2nd book in the trilogy.
