From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.
It was the summer of my life.
I’d met the guy of my dreams.
Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer¿and very much off-limits.
But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful.
He never treated me as his mother did-like hired … did-like hired help.
Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.
What a summer it was.
Until it all ended-badly.
I was never supposed to see Gavin again.
That didn’t stop me from thinking about him every day for ten years.
I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.
When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier, I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.
But I wasn’t prepared.
What if he hated me?
What if he loved someone else now?
I wasn’t prepared for all the unknowns.
And most of all, I wasn¿t prepared for today to be the day he came back.

Penelope Ward never disappoints, and this second chance romance was fantastic! The first half of the book tells us the backstory for Gavin and Raven when they met and dated in secret 10 years before. In the second half we are brought back to the present where they reconnect. This book was filled with emotion and heat and I truly liked both main characters. Penelope Ware is a master at taking her readers on an emotional roller coaster, and The Day He Came Back is a satisfying ride.
Give me angst! Penelope Ward always delivers, and she knows just how to make your heart ache. Plus, The Day He Came Back is a modern twist on Cinderella! (Standalone)
Penelope Ward has been one of my top authors to read. I don’t even read her synopsis because I already know I’m going to read the book and I know she’s going to shatter my heart somewhere down the line and make my heart beat double the rate and shatter it all in one gulp.
I loved how she started the book with the prologue because I knew I was going to be intrigued with how Gavin and Raven’s story would have started and once we started chapter one it all began. We get the first 10 years of when they first met and how everything went down to ten years later and if truths and lies will be clarified.
This book was all kinds of angsty, emotional and downright exhilarating!
Gavin is definitely a book boyfriend that any woman would love to have because of the way he was, he had a great heart and his love for Raven was so pure and real.
Raven, even though she didn’t come from a high class family, she was innocent, smart and beautiful who fell in love with Gavin since the first moment they spoke to each other.
5 Stars
Not my first read by author, I don’t know a lot of people actually anyone who hasn’t read a Penelope Ward book, I mean HELLOO!! I was preparing because of the Blurb that got me!
Right away my heart was hurting, but the back-story of Gavin & Raven…oh be still my heart. To come to an understand of the HOW was beautifully broken. THIS STORY WILL TEAR YOU DOWN & THEN BUILT YOU BACK UP!
O.M.G. Part one was a killer, and i mean that in every emotional feelings type of way. The whole back-story of them was very informative and heartbreaking on a lot of way. All the side characters, Raven’s mother and Gavin’s family, all had a backstory and some connection in a way. So to say that I disliked a character is hard, except except except Gavin’s mother, WOW she was a kicker!! It’s hard to say much because I don’t want to ruin it for you, but there was so much I just want to spill it all! Oh, and you will love Marina, HA! I want to be best friends with her and have her on my side of the ring!
Gavin: as a young man he was level headed, gorgeous and fun.
Raven: as a young woman she was strong, already grown up and eventful.
Gavin: As a man he is a knock out drop dead gorgeous and still his old self just more responsibilities as it seem.
Raven: As a woman she is broken, marked and still the honest beautiful girl she was.
This is a story of a boy and girl that fell in love so much that nothing could tare them apart, until one day something did, or did it in the first place at all? One summer proved that LOVE exists but did it still exist? It’s heartbreaking of the events that occur down to the last %. It’s a book that I couldn’t put down and reading it made me feel as if i was living it. I laughed, cried, got angry and loved with Gavin & Raven. A contrast story!
Penelope really is a magician!

AMAZING Read!! Loved Raven and Gavin’s story! Their story certainly wasn’t an easy one and I LOVED how well written their story was. It took me on an emotional journey in the best possible way! I loved Gavin’s brother Weldon! I don’t want to give anything away so all I will say is this is a MUST READ!!
I totally loved Raven and Gavin in this story! It was so refreshing to see that Gavin wasn’t a spoiled rich kid like his brother Weldon. And I loved that Raven was a strong heroine with a solid head on her shoulders. Penelope does a great job of showing how these two kids from opposite sides of the track were so deeply connected to each other.
I have a love/hate relationship with second chance romances, because for me, the reason for the separation of the two characters has to really be believable, and Penelope really crafted this one well with Gavin’s despicable mother. Ugh, I hated that woman. The grown up me had to really step back and remember that Raven was just a 20 year old girl from the wrong side of the tracks that had everything to lose, so the decisions she made were what SHE needed to do. Again, I hate that evil witch, Ruth!
Fast forward 10 years and Raven and Gavin are brought back together, and the sparks fly immediately. This part of the book was so angsty for me with what these character’s present situations are. Gavin’s present situation mostly is what caused this stress for me. Even though it caused me stomach aches, I couldn’t read fast enough to see what was going to happen with Raven and Gavin.
I absolutely loved the secondary characters! Gunther, Marni, and yes, even Weldon. Fans of high angst second chance romances are going to eat this book up!
An amazing second chance story! I absolutely loved Gavin and Raven. Their chemistry is electric from the start. You won’t be able to put this down. This storyline is filled with first love, angst and sacrifice. A definite must read!
Penelope Ward is one of my favorite authors. I am always excited when she has a new book coming out. The Day He Came Back was a one sitting read for me that I devoured. I loved second chance romances and this one was the full package.
Raven and Gavin’s story was perfection, they were bother willing to do anything for the people they love. It’s been 10 years since Raven has been back in the house her mom use to work at as a housekeeper. They had a summer together that was something you never forget, something happens that forces them apart.
Raven is a private nurse and working for Gavin’s father. She never expected she would see Gavin again. You could feel the chemistry and the pull between these two.
I loved everything about this book and highly recommend it! It’s a must read!
I absolutely loved this story. This is a typical lost love – second chances story. They meet, outside forces interfere and years later they reconnect. I fell so hard for Gavin. The first half of the story is told in the past. During the second half I felt all the feels. The pain, the joy, the tears.
I couldn’t give this 5-stars. I just felt like this wasn’t Penelope’s best work. I felt like I was getting short changed on the emotion descriptors throughout the story. Normally an amazing picture is painted that cues the reader to the tone of the dialogue that’s coming. In this story I felt like it was just dialogue. Like me friend was telling me a recount of a conversation between two people.
Still, I couldn’t stop reading it. I read the last three charters to my husband and he disagreed with me. He loved it. Im sorry. It pains me to 3-star this one because I love Penelope’s work and I loved this story!
I was provided an advanced reader copy of this book and I am voluntarily providing an honest review no matter how hard it is.
I’ve read lots of Penelope Ward’s books, but this is my all time favorite at this point! I loved it. Gavin is wealthy and handsome. Raven is hired help for Gavin’s family. He doesn’t see anything but how amazing she is. His mother on the other hand disagrees. Ten years later……will they still love each other or will each have moved on? You’ll love Ravin (Gavin + Raven). I loved every word of this book. I’m only sad because it’s over!
I was really excited to get the chance to review this book, it sounded so good. Penelope always writes great stories that are tough to put down. Unfortunately this time, although it was well written and absorbing, I just didn’t get as much out of it as I usually do with her books because it was a similar story to one I read earlier this year.
I love the rich guy falls in love with the poor girl/wrong side of town girl story and this one did not disappoint. Realistic and strong characters, especially Gavin, you could really feel his love and his anguish (and I fell in love with the model on the cover)! However, I felt that Raven could have been a bit more of a fighter but that was the way the story went.
This book will remind you how precious first love can be, and how easily it can be over. Gavin and Raven are torn apart by his Mother as she makes Raven choose between Gavin or money to pay for her mother’s cancer treatment. Ten years later they meet again as Gavin returns home to find that Raven is a nurse caring for his father. They have never stopped loving each other but their lives have moved on. Is their love strong enough to bridge time and distance?
All in all an easy to read love story great for the patio or the beach! but make sure you have tons of tissues with you because it does make you a bit teary eyed.
The Day He Came Back was a great second chance read. I loved it. I loved Gavin and Raven. I thought Gavin was really sweet and a great guy. I loved Gavin and Raven’s chemistry and connection.
Wow!
Where do I even begin??!!
This book was so incredibly beautiful! So many emotions were brought out as I read Gavin and Raven’s story!!
Undeniable chemistry and such great banter with a love that could possibly stand the test of time?! Swoonworthy and emotionally gripping with characters that you cant help Falling in love with!
I loved everything about this book. It just struck my heart, it was well written and at certain moments I just wanted to give the characters a big hug…
I was hooked from start to finish and I just didn’t want it to end! This was one of my best reads of 2019 and an absolute pleasure to read!
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again–when Penelope’s next book lands on your kindle, you better stop what you’re doing, and dive right in. And this blogger is SO GLAD I DID JUST THAT!
I always say that Pen’s next book is always better than the last, and The Day He Came Back is no exception to the rule! An unfortunate event leads Gavin back to his home to tend to his ailing father. What Gavin doesn’t anticipate is seeing the one girl who ran away and broke his heart.
Raven knows it’s only a matter of time before Gavin returns home to see his ailing father. What she doesn’t anticipate is the long-buried feelings she has for Gavin resurface faster than she can blink when she comes face-to-face with him again in his father’s home.
Penelope does an amazing job of bringing together two character’s past love into the present, reminding us that you can truly never forget the one person that got away from you. And what a treasure it is when that person manages to come back into your life, and only this time, they find a way to place themselves in your heart, forever.
4 stars for this heartfelt and beautiful second chance romance.
I’ve read a few books by Penelope Ward and to be honest this book didn’t catch my attention the same way the others did. It was good but I just liked her other books better. For me the whole storyline just started too fast and it was kind of a little bit over the top. There was just a little bit too much too fast – especially when they were teenagers. But then the book got better and I fell totally in love with Gavin and Raven. I liked the characters and their story much better when they were adults. I really enjoyed reading Gavin and Raven’s reunion. It was sweet and funny and definitely a great book. I wouldn’t expect anything else from Penelope Ward.
I absolutely loved this book, i know i could name a few of Penelope Wards as my favourite but this one just went straight to the tops. I loved Gavin and Ravens story.
I loved both Raven and Gavin’s character both of them were so lovable and there was never a point in this story where you disliked one more than the other these were just two characters trying to find their meaning in life and in a way try not fall to fast.
This was an emotional book that had you hanging on to each word, you knew that there was going to certain things that would play into this story that would make it hard for Gavin and Raven to be happy. What these two go through made it such a sad but beautiful story.
I don’t want to say to much to give it all away but this was such an amazing story and if your fan of Penelope Ward you won’t be disappointed and if you have never read her before not sure what your waiting for.
Absolutely loved this book and would love to give it more than 5 stars this deserves all the stars in the world loved loved loved it.
Whoa, I’m not normally a fan of second chance romances but this one totally blew me away! I couldn’t put it down. I loved the story, the emotion and the characters and loved the way they grew and evolved. Definitely another hit!
Omg!!! I could not put this book down!! Gavin and Raven’s story is heartbreaking because of their desire to be together but circumstances keep them apart. After years of being separated from each other’s lives, they are suddenly facing difficult circumstances and are forced back into each other’s world. And one of the last people you’d expect to show them the truth of their past, is exactly the person who does just that. Absolutely a great book that I loved so much!
This book is perfection a great read that addresses a fear that every women faces. Penelope has a way of writing a story that immediately leaves you wanting more and this wickedly awesome story did not disappoint. Gavin is a handsome son of a prominent Florida family who becomes infatuated with the daughter of the housekeeper, the beautiful Raven. Ruth his mother doesn’t approve and goes to great lengths to break them apart. When Raven’s mother finds she has breast cancer and no insurance Gavin’s Dad agrees to pay for the treatments behind Ruth’s back when Ruth learns of Gavin’s involvement with Raven and the fact her husband is paying for treatments she forces Raven to make an impossible decision. It’s here the story truly begins. This is a story of forced decisions, family betrayal, true all encompassing love, selflessness, fate, and true devotion. You are guaranteed to laugh, cry, and love as the story develops a five plus plus plus read that pulls every heartstring. A book that leaves you full of hope and craving more. If you have never read Penelope Ward make this your first….Bravo Penelope.
I was provided an ARC for an honest review.
I love this heartbreaking second chance romance. Penelope Ward is easily one of my favorite authors as her writing is always exceptional. It’s captivating, she seamlessly brings you into the world of her characters and falling in love with Gavin & Raven is so easy. The relationship between Gavin & Raven at age 20 and 21 is fresh and so genuine and although forbidden because of his mother, their connection becomes soul deep. Due to an impossible situation, Raven is forced to break both Gavin’s & her own heart. Is it fate that brings them back together 10 years later? Raven continues to keep her secret and Gavin has his own. As the two try to navigate whether they can find their way to having friendship again, they also struggle with feelings left unresolved. I loved everything about this book. Gavin is so kind, compassionate, and completely swoony. Raven is funny, strong, also compassionate and so loyal. There is so much love in this story. Get comfy and fall in love with Gavin & Raven.
