Some books just come from the heart.
Ben is a little bunny whose Grandpa is not himself. Then Dr Bear tells him that Grandpa Bunny has Dementia and talks about it being a disease of the brain.
I work with people living with dementia and their families. This was a beautifully written and very honest discussion of dementia aimed at younger children. Dementia changes people and is extremely confusing and confronting disease for younger children to understand. Yet, Isla Wynter, handled this concept, in a way that allowed the changes be described but also acknowledged the feelings a child might face with having someone they love have dementia.
I think this book has the potential to not only increase children’s understanding but can also help those who struggle to understand the disease and the changes that come with loving someone living with dementia.
Thank you Isla for having the courage to approach such a sensitive topic with compassion and understanding.

This is a good way to explain dementia to young children in a way they will understand and it helps them to realise it is one of those things

This is a thoughtful and compassionate book about a little bunny and his beloved grandfather, who is developing dementia.
Aimed at young children, this book presents positive ways to deal with dementia issues.
“The Day Grandpa Bunny Forgot Ben’s Name: A picture book about dementia” has lovely illustrations to complement the story and is suitable to read to your child, or for them to read by themselves. This book opens a dialog with children about life altering situations and ongoing relationships.

This is the very best children’s book explaining dementia that their grandparents may be going through, that I have ever read. Great tips on how to help your grandparent, easy to understand explanations of what is happening without over-explaining or causing unnecessary concern in children. Cute pictures and the story is interestingly written. My only problem was, it made me cry (I am an adult – old) remembering my mom with her Alzheimers. Terrible to lose a loved one through these diseases. Thank you to this author for giving parents a tool to help.

This was a sweet, tragic, and hopefully helpful book about what happens when Ben’s grandpa gets dementia. The illustrations were absolutely adorable, but I think it would have been better if they hadn’t been recycled throughout the book.

Good book for kids with aging grandparents
This book is a cute way to introduce kids to the reality of aging and memory loss.
My daughter enjoyed the story. I remember when my own grandma didn’t recognize me. I think this book will be a good way to help kids understand what is happening.
