“When I was born, I was unwanted. When I married Charles, I was unwanted. When I joined the Royal Family, I was unwanted. I want to be wanted.” –Diana, Princess of WalesWhere were you the day Diana died? Like the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the tragic death of the Princess of Wales on August 31, 1997 is one of the defining benchmarks in history – an event that touched each of us so … so profoundly we will never forget the moment we heard the news.
Twenty years after the Paris car crash that ended Diana’s life at age thirty-six, the story of her remarkable life and tragic death still have the power to mesmerize. Following her storybook wedding to Prince Charles, she had evolved from “Shy Di” into the planet’s most photographed, written-about, and talked-about woman – indeed, the most famous person in the world.
For all Diana’s global fame, much of the human drama that swirled around her death remained veiled in mystery and intrigue. Here, in the manner of his other 17 New York Times bestsellers, Christopher Andersen draws upon important sources – many of whom are agreeing to speak for the first time – to re-create in vivid and often startling detail the events leading up to that fateful night in Paris. Among the many revelations:
*Important information about Diana’s final moments alive, the accident itself–and her last words
*Prince Charles’s surprising reaction to the news of Diana’s death–including his shock the first time he saw her body–the
Queen’s bizarre request, and a riveting account of how Prince William and Prince Harry coped with their shock and grief
*The broken romance that pushed Diana into the arms of Dodi Fayed, their curious relationship, and whether or not she
truly planned to marry him.
*A behind-the-scenes account of the battle royal that raged between the Queen and Prince Charles in the days leadingup
to the funeral.
*Diana’s spiritual quest, and the warnings that might have saved her.
*Final answers to persistent rumors that Diana was pregnant at the time of the accident–and that she was the victim of a
murder plot.
*At the end, what Diana wanted for her sons, her vision of a future King William–and the American icon she most wanted
him to emulate.
Diana was, in every sense of the word, larger than life – a force of nature that, as the Royal Family learned, could be neither dismissed nor ignored. A bittersweet saga of triumph, love, and loss, The Day Diana Died captures those last days when Diana’s star never shone brighter–and evokes the beauty, grace, heartache, and compassion that made Diana one of the most compelling figures of our time.

Good to know the story of what actually happened but I was sad that they didn’t save her! They did so many things wrong!
I find Diana and her life so fascinating so it was a great read with many details that were unknown to me.
Not a “Tell All”, but good understanding of Diana and her relationship with her boys, as well as the Royal Family.
I thought we knew all there was to know about our beloved Queen of Hearts but this book gave amazing insight and little known details and a timeline of the days and moments up to Diana’s tragic death and the days after. It was an unexpected great read
Gives all the details leading up to the tragedy
I’ve read this a few times. It’s almost as if I’m still trying to make sense of what happened. I enjoy reading it every time. Maybe enjoy isn’t the right word, but reading it is comforting and informative. It’s not sensational, its empathetic.
Interesting book with new information not contained in other books I have read about Princess Diana.
Riveting…..the facts are presented with precision. You can’t put it down!
Easy reading but very enlightening about a historical event.
I do
Idi’d’care for it very
Describes the drama of the Royal Family very well, placing Diana against the complex tapestry of the court. A careful analysis of the tragic car crash, which I never really understood. The scope of her death……personally, politically…….is explored. Highly informative.
This book was a well-written account of events that lead to a tragic historic day. Poignant in the recounting of unintended occurrences, the author clearly shows how the ending could have and should have been avoided. While we all know what happened, the book reads like a page turning thriller. It is a simple yet very authentic read.
Well written and it shed light on some misconceptions about the actions of the Royal Family. I’m very glad I read it.
The book covers a lot of details I previously learned from living through the actual events and then sources covering the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death. Nevertheless, I learned some very interesting, informative and moving details. It is a worthwhile read.
He’s a good author. Stuff I hadn’t seen before. A decent read.
Too many rumors floated around when this happened. It was nice to have them cleared up.
It was well done.
I did not finish the book, was looking for less fluff
I don’t have more than a passing curiosity about Diana, but I thought this was a good overview. It gave me some sense of who she was (conflicting sides) and what happened that lead up to her death and the day she died. I felt that it gave me a sense of the royal family, their feelings and participation in her life and death. I greatly dislike negative books that judge other people, and for the most part this book was positive without appearing to merely slanted. I felt it was adequate for a casual read, and I felt the author did the best she could to only use reliable, first hand, or at least public sources.
A lot of her life was rehashed when I thought more would be about the accident and afterwards. It was still interesting.
