3.75 stars– THE DARKNESS is the second instalment in Nina Croft’s contemporary, adult DAUGHTERS OF THE MORRIGAN paranormal, romance series. This is vampire Darius Cole, and witch Gina’s story line. THE DARKNESS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Gina and Darius) THE DARKNESS is a second chance romance between vampire Darius Cole, and witch Gina. Twenty-one years earlier Darius discovered he fathered a daughter named Raven whose birth and death were prophesized to achieve victory in a war between good and evil. To protect the child, Darius ran until he could run no more ending with his daughter missing, and our hero barely alive. Fast forward to present day wherein the darkness is about to take down our story line hero until a voice from the past brings with it too many memories, anger and pain of loss and betrayal. Enter witch Gina, a daughter of the Morrigan, and the woman Darius both hates and loves. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Gina and Darius, and the potential fall-out as Gina’s visit comes with an expiry date as does her life.
THE DARKNESS is a quick story of family, betrayal, lies and loss. The premise is fast paced and inviting; the romance is passionate; the characters struggle to move on from the past.
This is a second chance romance with amazing page turning adventure. Loved it!
This is a truly well written heart wrenching compelling book. Darius and Gina have a painful past and a child together. Saving their child calls for drastic measures. I read this book in a day because I had to find out what happens. I received an advanced copy of this book. I freely leave this honest review.
Short yet amazingly satisfying. Second story in the series, it follows cross-star lovers vampire Darius and witch Gina. Witches don’t trust many, let alone a cocky vampire like Darius, so they really had lots against them from the beginning. Because it’s a second-chance romance there wasn’t much backstory, we just get to follow them as they try to reconnect and find a happily ever after.
I loved that we have a wider glance of their world but at the same time it was frustrating that it was still just a glance! I wish these stories were longer because I think their world is worth stepping into much further. As it is, I still recommend it if you’re in the mood for a fast PNR read.
** I received this book at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher **
This one was a quick read into the paranormal with vampires and witches. This is also like a second chance in the world this is in. Darius is in need this time with Gina bringing them together. I would say stubborn would be in the way but the heart wants what the heart wants. But there will be some and elements that try to get in between with us seeing whom will be the overcomer. It has the suspense to hold you and the heat to sear.
This is the story of Gina, a witch, and Darius, her vampire lover. They are the parents of Raven who was featured in book one, The Prophecy. They were madly in love once but ended up apart through no fault of their own. They reunite briefly to save their daughter (The Prophecy) but no matter how much Gina wants to be with Darius, circumstances are once again forcing them apart. The difference this time is that Darius is going to fight for the woman he loves.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Gina and Darius have great chemistry and their love and desire for each other is evident. It’s a quick read and I couldn’t put it down. I like this series a lot and can’t wait to read the next book.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
This is second in the Daughters of Morrigan series by Nina Croft. Featuring the parents of Raven Cole from the first story of the series, this takes place weeks later from that one in which Darius Cole and Gina meet again, learn a lot of what kept them apart, and what the future holds for them. However, the future may be cut short for the two of them…
I liked the couple and their reconciliation. But I do feel like the story could have been expanded more to include flashbacks of their first meeting, their present interactions, and a glimpse of their first meeting with their daughter as a couple. I enjoyed the world created in this series by the author, and would definitely read more in the future.

The Darkness takes place almost immediately after the events of The Prophecy and involved the parents of that book’s heroine. Darius and Gina both played a part in the first book, but we see much more of them (in every sense 😉 ) here. I suppose this one could be read on its own–the important events from the first book are mostly explained–but I think you’d do much better following along if you’ve read Raven’s book first. Honestly, I’d really recommend binge reading them together–they’re pretty short, so it won’t take up too much of your time and I really think it would give you a much more complete experience. Even the mere week that was in between when I read them seemed too much–I felt like I spent more time getting up to speed than I would have liked (to be fair, though, I read a lot of other books in that week, which muddied the details a bit).
This book is really just Gina and Darius’s story–other characters play a very minor role and have minimum page time. The secondary characters with the biggest roles are two of Gina’s relatives–one because she has slightly more page time (but isn’t terribly sympathetic–I’m interested to see how/if Ms. Croft can make me like her more in future books) and the other because she pretty much gets our hero and heroine to their HEA. (Like in the first book, the revelation of how to get the characters there turns out to be amazingly simple–I am almost ashamed that I needed to be told what the solution was! But so did Darius, so there’s that…)
As much as I liked Darius and Gina here (and I did like them!) I would have liked to also have seen a bit more of their “before” story, since theirs is a second chance romance. With such a limited amount of pages, however, that’s not really feasible–Ms. Croft does a decent job of showing how and why they didn’t make it before through the characters’ revelations, though, and gives us hope for the future.
Fingers crossed that we don’t have to wait too long for a book 3!
(Once again, this is a re-issue of an earlier book. I didn’t read that version, though, so I can’t say what was different or how it compares.)

I really enjoyed reading The Darkness. The story, characters were great and the pace of the story was really good. I really enjoy this series and look forward to reading the rest.
I received this as an early release from the author and I love this series it keeps you eagerly involved from start to finish and now I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out so I can read that one. Nina is an author that I would readily follow and I love all of her books she weaves you into her stories and keeps you highly entertained while reading them.
