: In this book we follow Amelia’s investigation revealing a series of abductions and murders are related, while she tries not letting her past get in the way.
I thought this was a fascinating debut. For a book coming in at 283 pages, this book packed a punch. There were some twists I saw coming, and a couple I did not see. The pacing in this book made it a joy to read. Her writing style is something I haven’t seen in the thriller world, which is very refreshing. I cannot wait to read more from this author. If you haven’t heard of Heather Wynter, look her up and purchase this book. She’s a new face in the thriller world with a unique writing style, and a damn good debut. I highly recommend everyone putting this book into your hands to read!!!!

I came by this book when I was on Booksprout, and after seeing its cover, I got intrigued. I cast an eye on the description, liked what I saw and requested an ARC edition of it. Not going to lie, but I think this book was one of the best mysteries and thrillers I have ever read.
The novel is about Amelia, who’s a cop. She has to do her job without letting her past get in the way, but is she able to? She is bright and only after a few days she sees the connection between her and the series of murders she has to investigate. Will that affect the course of the investigation? On top of everything, her mother died recently, and she left Amelia a flash drive with the secrets of a powerful man. As the secrets start to reveal and the number of bodies to grow, she sees that every victim is connected. A connection which shows how far people are going to go to protect their secrets.
As you might have already realized, Amelia is the main character. Her portrait is made with lights, as well as shadows which makes her a complex and round figure. Trent and Brenda are her mates, who stay by her side during the entire story, even if Amelia doubts their loyalty. When she was a child, she got kidnapped, and ever since, she had many difficulties in trusting the people around her. Everything changes when she meets Everett (her mother’s attorney). She opens up to him for a reason she doesn’t understand, and he listens to her every step of the way. Just like I said before, Trent is one of her best friends, and he is always by Amelia’s side (they work together). Maybe this is the reason why his story is well developed. On the other hand, Brenda is rarely present. It would’ve been better if her story had been more engaging and If she had been more active to the story. Emma was the other girl who got abducted with Amelia, and she plays an important role in the story.
Last but not least, writing quality and style. While reading, I didn’t feel the need to put the book down. Unlike other mysteries and thrillers, I wasn’t tedious in the beginning. It grabbed me like a shark, and I couldn’t let the book down until it finished. Although it was very engaging, I didn’t feel like I had a moral (it was something there, but the impact it had on me was pretty light). It would have been better if the author put more accent on it at the end of the story. To be honest, I haven’t read a story with such plot twists (all I can say is that they turned your whole world upside down).
This novel is a combination of thriller & mystery, comedy (a bit of) and romance, and it keeps you at the edge of your seat.
Overall, ‘The Darkest Secrets’ by Heather Wynter was a delightful read. If you are looking for an original, good written story about secrets and the troubles they come with, this is the story for you!
The Darkest Secrets, so dark and twisted, not possible to figure out.
This is the perfect read for die hard ‘who done it’ fans. It’s complicated, pages have to turn till secret reveals make them fly to an unbelievable end.
Don’t miss this one, see if you can figure it out!
Kind of sad in parts because of everything that happened in a prior time. I can’t say it was a page turner, but it still was really good. Great characters.
5 CRANKY STARS
This is a suspense crime novel that pulls you in from Chapter 1. I honestly did not understand what was happening in that first chapter, but it soon made more sense. The author managed to fool me for most of the book. I usually figure out who did what from the start but instead I remained just as confused as the characters in the book. The story revolves around Amelia, a detective in the Nashville police department. She and her partner are investigating a string of murders and she is convinced it is related to a traumatic event in her childhood. Her partner, Trent is not as sure. When the FBI sends an agent to help with the case, Amelia is furious. He happens to be the agent that took her job when she was asked to leave the Bureau. Of course, she hates him and does not trust him. When her mother died two years ago, she never closed the estate and now the lawyer is also on her case to close it out. She finally agrees to meet with him and a whole new level of stress is on her shoulders. This is a spellbinding, page turner that keeps one on the edge of their seat. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes this genre.
I enjoyed reading The Darkest Secrets and found it to be an interesting thriller. The characters are well developed and intelligent. The storyline is well written and kept me invested in the book with murder, intrigue, secrets, and twists and turns.
I would recommend this book.

This is an entertaining tail of Amelia who lost her job at the FBI and joined the police department where her friends Trent and Brenda also worked. Amelia had a traumatic experience as a young child along with another young lady and was dealing with her past traumas, along with trying to be a better person herself. One of her major flaws is being late to work on an almost daily basis much to Trent’s disapproval as he was one who helped her get her job and took the slack for her. They were working on a case that involved the murder of a young lady and the FBI was called in, in the form of Gabe. Gabe happened to be the FBI agent who took Amelia’s old job so there was resentment there. This tale intertwines the lives of Amelia and Trent, Emma and her dysfunctional family, Anna one of the murder victims, Isabella another murder victim, as well as past traumas suffered by Amelia and Emma. Another story intertwined in this tale are some issues Amelia had to work out concerning her mother. While Amelia and Trent were working to solve the Anna’s murder, Amelia uncovered some secrets about her mother she knew nothing about.
Ms. Wynter does a fascinating job intertwining all these twists and turns, all culminating together in the end for a well-told tale. There is just the right amount of murder, police investigation, some soul searching on the part of Amelia, and maybe even just a hint of romance. If you have never read Ms. Wynter’s book(s), give her a try. I am sure you won’t be disappointed!
Wow! This book was a slow start at first, but it kept me interested. I loved the dedication of Amelia and the characters were amazing. Never know what someone is going through and I liked that this touched on real life. HEA!!
