When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: … worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her — East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

If you love dystopian novels with a touch of the paranormal, then you’ll want to grab The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. The story opens with a world in which children and teens have developed powered for reasons unknown and are being shipped to detention facilities billed to the public as rehabilitation camps. Ruby, the story’s heroine, is …
I loved reading the story of Ruby. I emerged myself in the “freak kid” world. I am too old to have been sorted but that didn’t stop my appreciation. So I decided to share Ruby’s misadventures with my children. They have been enthralled with the abilities of the kids. Young minds thinking of all the crazy awesome and not dwelling on the …
The darkest minds was a good read. It followed the “something is wrong with the teenager, now the teenagers must fight the government” storyline. I still found myself absorbed in this book and the sequels, despite the typical storyline. The characters were all well thought out and developed. I could’ve done without the back and forth relationship …
I’m kind of up and down on this book. On the one hand, I did enjoy it. On the other, there were parts where the story dragged. On the other other hand…well, I would have to say that, if you enjoy YA dystopian fiction, give it a shot. By the ending, you are ready to read book 2 which, thanfully, has been published.
The Darkest Minds is so unpredictable. I did not have so much faith, I admit, but after reading this book, I realize it’s really good.
I liked this book a lot. I recommend it for teens who like adventure and science fiction. If you read this book you should also read all the 4 books too.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
Today is the day that I have finished this book. It wasn’t that the book was bad, quite the opposite actually! I loved it a lot that I didn’t want to finish the the first book, because I don’t have the rest of them to read yet.
I loved how different this book was from any other I’ve read. The story was compelling and beautiful, but hurtful …
I gave this book four stars!
In this novel we are thrust into a dark world where children and adolescents have begun to develop abilities. The majority of them have been placed in internment camps and are subject to endless terrible conditions, physical labor, and sometimes even torture. Ruby was taken when she was ten and has lived at the …
Recommended to me by a friend who knows all the best books to read, I’m happy I jumped on the suggestion. From the start, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story each time I was forced to put it down. I equally loved Liam, Chubs, Zu and Ruby, and how strong and hopeful they continued to be even with the crazy evil government, the …
i first liked the movie. so than i read the book.
I love action, I love mutant characters with powers, and I love the main character especially.
Very hard to put this book down! Read it in two and a half days. The characters, the story, and the action kept me guessing. Loved it!
Honestly I’ve always been a big fan of dystopian books and this one hit the nail. The development of Ruby and Liams relationship was never a dull moment, full of heart wrenching bits and pieces that had me laughing hard and feeling the need to re-read the utter nonsense the two spewed. All the characters seem to have left a strong impression on me …
Alexandra has really built a wonderful world and I love this book. I also love how her book titles fit into a sentence (apart from the last one). So cool
this book was THE best
This was an amazing book that i honestly couldn’t get enough of read all book in a week !
I’ve been on the wait list to read this book from my library for what feels like forever. Finally, I got my hands on it and boy was it worth the wait. I’ve always been a fan of the dystopian genre and this first book in the Darkest Minds series did not disappoint.
I was intrigued right away with the idea of a “disease” spreading through …
This review MAY contain spoilers.
While there is a ton of hype about this book, I purposefully declined to read any reviews of this book so that my expectations wouldn’t skyrocket. That is a surefire way to pave the road to disappointment. I knew that I wanted to read this book before I saw the movie based on it. (That was just released!) I’m …
This is a wonderful book for those who like books like H2O by Virginia Bergin.
