I’m now on a quest to read all her books. Enough said!
It promised twists and it delivered, big time. Right up to the last page. A dozen times I told myself I knew how it would end, and I still was surprised at the end. I immediately bought several more of her books and the next was the same quality, lots of twists, I knew how it would end, and it didn’t. My new FAVE author.
After just finishing The Darkest Lies, I feel as thought I’ve been through an emotional wringer! The story centres on a parent’s worst nightmare. Teen sneaks out and becomes a victim of a brutal attack.
I loved how Beth, the teenage daughter’s story was written alongside her mother, Mel’s story. The first person POV made it all feel so real as she investigated her daughter’s steps. I definitely felt her pain. A whole town comes under suspicion before Mel closes in on the attacker, keeping the tension up.
A thoroughly enjoyable, atmospheric, psychological thriller that will make you check where your teens are more often than usual. I’d definitely recommend it. And wow – what an ending!
The Darkest Lies by Barbara Copperthwaithe was an interesting read.
The Plot flowed brilliantly and some things that you were certain you had guessed were turned completely on their head.
I loved the way the story jumped from the mother then to daughter, unfolding the story perfectly through Beth’s eyes gave us such a profound insight into the inner workings of Beth’s teenage thought process.
The characters were extremely diverse and thought provoking and I found myself thinking what if? what if this was my daughter? what would I do faced with an identical situation?
I wasn’t overly fond of the mother, I found her to be quite selfish and single minded, but saying that none of us knows exactly how we would behave in this scenario. This sort of plight can bring out the best and the worst in us.
I didn’t guess the end and was rubbing my hands together in glee over the sweet poetic justice it brought.
So overall this was a very enthralling read that I enjoyed very much. I received a free e-copy of The Darkest Lies from NetGalley and this is my own honest opinion.

Well written, but the plot was unrealistic and predictable. “Twist” was underwhelming.
I understood very well the fear the mother felt when her young daughter went missing. My own little boy was missing for a few hours but happily he was found at a friends house. This story is about a daughter who died and how her mother found the killer and got her revenge. Great story.
I liked this book and it certainly kept my focus wanting to read it almost entirely in one sitting. I enjoy books that I cannot figure out the who-done-it and this one kept me guessing until the very end.
Very realisti.
difficult to stay engaged
Loved it!
Oi, this book! It began with a great premise and great promise, only to devolve into WAY too much chattiness and a blithe acceptance of ridiculous, illogical actions on the part of the characters. I read 75 % of the story, then gave up trying to suspend my disbelief. My newest quibble: if a book must advertise its “shocking and twisted” ending, it’s going to be a disappointment. That is a carrot that the author dangles to entice the reader to finish the book. Rarely have I found it worth the read.
I couldn’t put this one down…very surprising ending.
Great!
A book of suspicion , tragedy, and justice in the end. A good mystery, keeps you reading right to the end. Hard to put the book down.
