Holy crow! What did I just read?! The Dark War by Angela Addams was simply a-maz-ing!!! All my happy buttons got pushed with this book and honestly, I didn’t expect it to happen. I’m not normally into witches but the blurb was interesting enough that I thought I’d give it a twirl. Sooooo glad I did!
A quick rundown – Kali is a witch. She’s not a great spellcaster but her tracking abilities are off the hook. After the death of her sisters and a bad break-up, she leaves home, her family and everything she knows. It’s been eight years and now she has a new life as a hunter…of witches. That pretty much makes her a traitor to her kind. However, she does only hunt bad witches. Her current bounty is to find the killer of a young witch. As Kali soon discovers, the killer is not a normal witch but a hybrid witch-vampire and battling her may be more than she can handle. During a brutal attack, Kali is rescued by none other the man who broke her heart. There are still heat between them but she still angry and hurt by his betrayal. Before she can send Wyatt packing, she finds out her mom has awakened from her coma and has voiced a new prophecy. A Dark War is coming and it will be a battle between humans and the supernatural…and the only one who can stop them is Kali. Expect quite a lot of exciting stuff to happen in this non-stop edge of your seat story but before I give any of it away, I’m going to stop right here.
I really liked Kali. She’s spunky, sassy and a tad (maybe more than a tad) bit stubborn. Learning her back-story made me want to hug her except I’m afraid she’d kick my ass. Wyatt = strong, tough and yummy. Okay, that said someone please punch him! Together they are volatile and combustible. That means when things are hot between them – Oh Baby! When they fight on the same side – booty-kicking action! Nevertheless, keep in mind he broke her heart and she left home for a reason. Hit him, hit him NOW! As hot and cold as things are between them, I found myself unable to stop cheering them on to be together. And then Wyatt goes and opens his big mouth again…
There are quite a few great characters in this series (Sam and Clive) and some that are just plain scary (Ivana) that keep everything fast-paced and interesting. A few are worth a individual mention. Drake…hmmm… I’m not 100% convinced he’s a good guy. He has these moments of me him. Then something comes out of his mouth and I find myself telling Kali to run far away from the creepy guy! I have quite a few opinions of where I think things may go and they all revolve around him. Billy, oh please don’t let this be the last time we see him (Pun intended!). He’s so badass and a lovable guy at the same time. The Curtises, I’m going to put a pin on that right there. Lastly is Rick who is a prepper. I took that to be coo-coo bananas conspiracy theory thinker. But now, I’m not so sure. Hmmm.
I’m trying really hard to not second guess where author Angela Addams is going to take this series. She’s left a bunch of clues like little breadcrumbs of possibilities and my brain is spinning a mile a minute trying to decide which way the story is going to go. At this point, my struggle is going to have to sit on the back burner because I’ve stalked her page and see no sign of the next book. *Heavy sigh* Whenever it comes out I will be all over it. For now, I’m giving The Dark War two big thumbs up and my stamp of recommendation.
Edited to add: I was devastated when the author’s publisher closed their doors and I lost all hope that there wouldn’t be a second book. I am so over the moon to see Ms. Addams has found a new publisher and is currently working on the next book. So excited in fact that, while I really didn’t need to re-read The Dark War again, I did it for the sheer pleasure. Second time around, two years later and I still am in the same amount of awe I was the first time around. Yup, this book is THAT GOOD!
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.
