Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba “An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King’s greatest literary achievement” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series. A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful … to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.
Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).

King at his best
Impressed does not begin to describe my reaction to this book. I’ve heard of the Dark Tower series for a long time, and had been meaning to pick it up just as long, but only the other day managed to finally start it. On a whim I picked it up one morning at around 6am when I couldn’t sleep. . . and found myself devouring it word for word. Fully …
This is one of my favorite series. It starts. with a perfect sentence and just soars from there.
The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed………
Great start to an 8 book series!
Stephen King is truly the King of Kings. Masterfully written book, plot keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a great read and you’ll get off on it
Totally hooked!
The beginning of what I think is the greatest story ever told.
Fantastic read !!
If you read and like this book, you MUST read the whole series. Typically Steven King good vs evil but taken to a whole new level. Wonderful fantasy, and characters I could identify with. I highly recommend this, and the whole series.
I’ve read this book before, but let me tell you. It’s got the right stuff!
This book is a series starter with great re-readability. It’s not the best of The Dark Tower series, but it is the best to reread. It’s short, fast-paced, and has an insane world with some genuine scares.
In 1970, a twenty-three Stephen King (who was but only a peasant …
Sorry, series ending sucks. I recommend a rewrite.
This book begins a journey to the Dark Tower. I waited literally years between books. You have the privilege of not having to wait any longer than it takes you to read them. I fell in love with characters. I highly recommend this series!
I’m a Stephen King fan, but I read the first 2 books and couldn’t go any further. I know the series has many devoted followers. I am not among them.
This is the 1st of 7 in the Dark Tower series.
Definitely a great starting place for the journey that spans multiple books. The characters really grow on you and come alive, especially once you dive into the second of these, The Drawing of the Three. A must read for any King fan.
Loved this series
I was hooked at the great opening line! I’d been thinking about reading this series for quite some time and finally got the first book or two. I really need to go back and read them in succession.
What a treat, Stephen King just sucks you in from the first word, you don’t want it to end and never ever disappoints you. He takes you on one hellacious read, one that will haunt you, leave you begging for more offerings from him and arguably the greatest wordsmith of them all.
Read the wholeepic adventure could understand half of it. Couldn’t quit till I was done. Lost a job and a marriage
This was the most difficult read of The Dark Tower books. Just really difficult to get in to, and I didn’t get much of a sense of Roland as a character. But it’s a short read, and the other books are so worth it.
