To touch a Dark One is death.
To talk to an immortal is suicide.
Yet, I’ve been marked by both.
A Vampire.
And the King of the immortals.
My life is no longer my own.
And now I know the truth, my life was never mine to begin with.
It was theirs.
It’s always been theirs.
I fucking loved this book! It was funny and sexy and I don’t know what to say about it that won’t give shit away but just read the description and go with it on this one. I don’t want to spoil any of the plot. Anyway, I’m downloading book 2 now. I mean I can say it’s a PNR. That’s about all I want to say. Just read the blurb and go with it.
“To touch a Dark One is death. To talk to an immortal is suicide. Yet, I’ve been marked by both. A Vampire. And the King of the immortals. My life is no longer my own.” OMG! This was amazing. Loved it. First time reading this Author. Certainly won’t be the last.
I’m gonna say it… I was extremely confused for a lot of this story. It was at once complex and simple. There were times where I felt I was being led somewhere and yet the thought or action wasn’t completed. I was left dangling, hoping for just a little more. When I finally got a good idea of what it was I was actually reading, I was glad to be both entertained and intrigued. Even though I was confused, I enjoyed reading about the journey Genesis went through, her transition from obtuse female protagonist to understanding heroine. Ethan grabbed my attention from the start and watching his every move, his every word, his every thought was a freaking thrill. I only wish the chemistry between the two main characters ran a bit hotter than illustrated. I don’t get why adult authors who write adult books for adults are so terrified of writing about a truly scorching connection between their characters. Give me heat!!
I’ve read quite a few books by RVD, but this one was far different from anything I’ve read before. I love when authors write in different genres. It gives me the chance to see how they speak in another voice, how adaptable they are to different scenery, how their writing can transcend me in a multitude of ways. In my humble opinion, with The Dark Ones, RVD tempted me just enough to see how the rest of this series measures up.
I adore this series. The characters are a new twist on paranormal tropes and I fell in love with them all right out of the gate. Start with this book and read them all. A great find for us paranormal fans. I wish there were more books in this series.
I don’t usually read paranormal but I do read Rachel VanDyken so…here we go! I really enjoyed The Dark Ones. It was full of mystery and sexiness! There are so many complex and amazing characters!
Vampires, werewolves, sirens, archangels, and “Dark Ones” who are immortals living in the world alongside humans. The plot lines are complex at times but still exciting and interesting. If you love PNL, you will LOVE the Dark Ones!
And even with all of that going on, there is angst, heartache and OMG moments!
4.5 Stars!

This book it the first book in The Dark Ones Saga and I really liked this introduction to this world. The book is told from dual POV and mainly follows Genesis and Ethan who is a vampire. The world building was a bit confusing at the beginning, but once the book really started to kick off, I did not want to stop reading. There were a lot op surprises a long the way, which I liked, because I was not expecting it! I think my favorite thing was the banter between all the characters, I liked their interactions a lot and it was fun to read about. The romance in this book is definitely adult and steamy. A important part of the book is mating and this also has to do a bit with instant love. It did not bother me in this book, but I know this might be an issue for some. Recommending this book to those looking for a steamy paranormal romance.

It’s no secret I’ve been a fan of Rachel Van Dyken for quite some time. She literally tops my list of 1-click authors right under Nora Roberts! When you are an avid reader, every once in a while, you are lucky enough to find someone who writes what resonates with you, and as I’ve said before, I hit the jackpot when I stumbled upon my first RVD book about six years ago. I’ve pretty much devoured everything she’s ever written since then.
NICUnurse’s Rating: I read this book when it was first published back in 2015, but I’ve never reviewed it. I wasn’t a reviewer at that time and had no idea how critical reviews were to authors. I’ve learned a lot since then. OK. The review. When I first read this book, I wasn’t a huge paranormal romance fan unless you’re Nora Roberts. But because I was already hooked on RVD’s writing, I gave it a shot. It’s now my second favorite book series of hers! It’s a bit dark, twisty, and suspense-y, but with some very amusing moments tossed in (part of why I love her books so much!). Hang on to your hats because this one will leave you ready to dive into the rest of The Dark Ones books ASAP!
I give The Dark Ones by Rachel Van Dyken 4.5 out of 5 stars!
Absolutely loved the chemistry between Genesis and all the other characters. I went in not know this was PNR and boy was I surprised. It was not what I expected since it was my first read for RVD, I guess you see a name enough you think you know what they are all about. Nope not this time. RVD captured me and although I read book one as part of an anthology, I will be going back to read the rest of the series. Her characters are interesting, her story line is intriguing and I need to know what’s going to happen to my man…Cassius.
Genesis has her number chosen and she is sent to the immortals. She quickly finds that everything she had been taught is false. Genesis finds herself marked by Ethan the vampire and Cassius the king of the immortals. Now she is in the middle of a battle for her life.
I am embarrassed to say that Rachel Van Dyken has been on my TBR list for a long time yet this is my first of her books. I had no idea she wrote PNR so nice finding this story as part of the Top Shelf Romance “A Kiss for You”. I loved that we got so many facets of paranormal with vampires, werewolves, sirens and angels. This story gives you some love, laughter, angst and lots of action. I am excited to check out the rest of this series as well as RVD’s other works.
This book was really good! I think it might be my new paranormal romance for the next couple of weeks at least. There was great world and character building as well as a plotline that wasn’t super obvious. Though I was a tad confused at moments I think it pulled together well and I cannot wait for a bit of time to read the next book!
How come I haven’t read this book earlier, even though it has been on my e-reader for ages?
This book is PERFECTION! From the first to the last page! Every twist, every turn … pure perfection!
The protagonists, aside from being immortal, feel so relatable. I love this story to pieces and can’t wait to binge-read the complete series!
The Dark Ones (The Dark Ones Saga #1) was a great read by Rachel Van Dyken. When you touch a dark one it means death. It is suicide to talk to an immortal. Genesis has been marked by both; the King of the immortals, and a vampire. The more that she knows, the more she realizes that her life was never truly her own. I really enjoyed reading Genesis, Ethan and Cassius’ story. I can’t wait to read more by Rachel Van Dyken.

I loved this first book of the dark ones series ! I devoured it ! I Fell in love with this fascinating world and all of the characters !
This story was about genesis and Ethan – a human called to serve the immortals and a vampire – one of the elders in the immortal world .
In this super natural world that includes vampires, werewolves, sirens , archangels , demons and the fallen angels too balance must be kept at all times but a long tome ago something caused an imbalance .
The question everyone is asking is ‘could genesis be the one the restore the balance ?’
I am totally hooked and can’t wait to find out what happens next . There is no cliff hanger by the way this book could easily be read in its own if you want but the connected books follow the other characters journeys and really they are all enticing and interesting and even funny at times and like a great big family … I can’t help but want to read more !!
My second time reading this series and I fell in love all over again.
I love when an author creates a world with werewolves, vampires and other paranormal beings but adds their own elements to the world to make these beings their own. That is what Rachel Van Dyken has done in The Dark Ones world she has created an addictive story with compelling characters in a world that is completely her own.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I enjoyed reading it. She is a skilled writer. The beginning, especially, sucked me in and kept me reading. The characters were fairly well developed and interesting. I gave it 4 stars because I wished I saw more evidence of what made Genesis so special. The last third of the book dragged a bit for me.
5 stars for The Dark Ones by Rachel Van Dyken . This is book one in The Dark Ones Saga. This is Genesis and Ethan’s story. I have to say this was a fast read and it was different from anything else I have read in this genre. We have the Dark Ones, the Immortals, and the humans. It had this suspense about it because we didn’t know what Genesis’ number being called meant. I love how strong Genesis’ character is even though she is a human surrounded by Immortals. Also, after everything she has been taught is wrong, she is still strong. Ethan is yummy and I want some of this vampire. The best part is that all these strong immortals seem to be afraid of love and what comes with it. “Love, in all my experience , was just that-selfishness wrapped up in a pretty bow.”I can not wait to read more about this series.
I have no words because this book was that good. I love me my pnr books first and foremost before every other genre. I inhaled every word on one sitting.
I really like this author and most of the books I’ve read from her I devoured. This one was a struggle for me to get through. I’m not sure if I just couldn’t connect to the story or if it just wasn’t that great. Would def read more by her but I think I will sit out any other of this series.
