In THE DARK HORSE, widowed Chloe Brewton has made a life for herself in Christmas Town, Maine, teaching literature and being the drama coach at the high school. Although she’d loved her husband and their life in the army, she doesn’t really want to start over with someone else, but when she meets Major Row Welcome, in Christmas Town to spend the holiday month with relatives and decide about his … his future, she feels stirrings of old wishes for happily-ever-after. The attraction is mutual, although the last thing Row wants is to try marriage again, plus he’s about as interested in having a family as…well, he isn’t. But then there’s Connor Michaud and his three younger siblings. Oh, no. What now in Christmas Town?

Can Chloe love another military man?
The Dark Horse by Liz Flaherty is the tenth book in the 12 Days of Heartwarming Christmas pack of books, and I loved it. It was a nice contrast to the others so far, which is always good. The two main characters come together because they love each other; but also because they want to help one of their students and his siblings.
Chloe (Brewton) Welcome
Chloe (Brewton) Welcome started the book as Chloe Brewton the widower of an Army medic and knew that she didn’t want that life anymore. Though love doesn’t always listen. She loves the students she teaches and has always wanted to be a mom. In this book, she gets everything she’s ever wanted and more. Chloe is a fantastic character, and it surprised me when Chloe would do something that I wouldn’t think she would do. Her life it seemed was waiting for her new husband to come along and pick up the pieces of her heart giving her the family she’s always dreamed of having.
Rowan Welcome
Rowan Welcome is on his leave from Thanksgiving to until the New Year, and he’s spending it with his uncle and aunt in Christmas Town, Maine. It’s here that he finds his calling and maybe a life that he doesn’t want to leave. He has a heart murmur that he has to take into account, and Rowan’s a great person. Especially with taking care of the four kids that he and Chloe have decided to foster together. They got married so that they could do this and he is perfectly happy with where he is at in life. The ending was perfect for this happy little family of six.
Five Stars
The Dark Horse by Liz Flaherty is an excellent book that covers more than just Heartwarming Christmas. It includes a family that isn’t blood but one that they choose. Ms. Flaherty did an excellent job with this story. I am giving it five stars and recommending it to everyone that reads Romance.

I love second chance stories!
I just loved loved loved this book, Row and Chloe have both been married before and on the other side of the fence to each other with the military. Chloe’s husband lost his life while he was in service and Row lost his wife’s love while he was away in service. Neither think they will find love again but Christmas town has other ideas. Row instantly knows there is a sadness to Chloe when he meets her and Chloe thinks about getting close to someone fir the first time in years but they both have pain they need to work through from their loses which even though are at different ends of the spectrum still mean the loss of what could have been their lives. I just love how you not only to get to know then but also their friends and family too including those not present now, you feel the excitement of what you think might happen as well as the frustration of them dancing around their feelings and the love they feel for Connor and his brothers and sisters.
“The Dark Horse” is a beautiful story about heartbreak and hope, and finding family when you least expect it. A story about a place called Christmas Town, where Christmas magic reigns supreme, could come off as kitschy, but in Liz Flaherty’s capable hands, the story has just enough grit mixed with the magic to create the perfect balance. I loved Row and Chloe’s story, and I so enjoyed watching these two scarred people fall in love.
I love Christmas books!
The Dark Horse
I loved the story of Row and Chloe, so cute that Row last name is Welcome. Row comes to Christmas Town for a visit , he meets Chloe who is working with the kids doing a play. They are working on a musical. They are some kids there that is in foster care. What will happen to the children? Read and see.
This is part of a series called the 12 days of Heartwarming Christmas, they are all completely different stories set in Christmas Town. They are several others that sound very good like this one was. I really enjoyed the story. The author made the characters so real, unique names, the story really touched me. Brings out the struggles that kids face in foster care.
I was honored to receive an complementary copy of from the author. I was not required to write an positive review. This is my own opinion.
How lovely to be back in Christmas Town, Maine! I’ve loved everyone of Liz Flaherty’s Christmas Town books and this one was no exception.
Neither Row Welcome nor Chloe Brewton are looking for love. They’ve both been there and done that. Chloe loves her life teaching high school lit and helping out in the drama department. Row has come to Christmas Town to spend the holidays with family and to make a big life decision. But their attraction is immediate and undeniable and as Row becomes involved in the enchantment of the little Maine town, he’s also drawn to Chloe. Chloe has sworn off men, especially men in the military after she loses her husband, but Row makes her heart beat faster for the first time in a long time.
Ms. Flaherty spins her special brand of magic once again as Row and Chloe’s relationship grows to a family of foster children. I confess to tears, but then Ms. Flaherty’s books always make me cry, always in the very best way. Thanks for another wonderful holiday romance!
