“A masterpiece of women’s wisdom.”—Christiane Northrup, M.D. “The journey to capture her feminine soul and live authentically . . . makes a fascinating, well-researched and well-written story.”—Publishers WeeklyIn celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its publication, a newly reissued edition of the bestselling author’s classic work of feminine spiritual discovery, with a new introduction … work of feminine spiritual discovery, with a new introduction by the author.
“I was amazed to find that I had no idea how to unfold my spiritual life in a feminine way. I was surprised, and, in fact, a little terrified, when I found myself in the middle of a feminist spiritual reawakening.”—Sue Monk Kidd
For years, Sue Monk Kidd was a conventionally religious woman. Then, in the late 1980s, she experienced an unexpected awakening, and began a journey toward a feminine spirituality. With the exceptional storytelling skills that have helped make her name, Kidd tells her very personal story of the fear, anger, healing, and freedom she experienced on the path toward the wholeness that many women have lost in the church.
From a jarring encounter with sexism in a suburban drugstore, to monastery retreats and to rituals in the caves of Crete, she reveals a new level of feminine spiritual consciousness for all women—one that retains a meaningful connection with the “deep song of Christianity,” embraces the sacredness of ordinary women’s experience, and has the power to transform in the most positive ways every fundamental relationship in a woman’s life—her marriage, her career, and her religion.

I felt Sue Monk Kidd wrote specifically for me about my own journey and wrestling with patriarchal Christianity to discovering the Divine Feminine and back to a renewed, richer, and deeper Christian faith.
A deeply spiritual, extremely well-written book that I loved, learned from and related to on so many levels.
Kidd’s message has never been more important.
There is an epidemic of loneliness and anxiety in America today. Who ever heard of an epidemic being something other than an illness? Still, research shows it’s true. And Kidd’s shining a …
I don’t know where I was 20 years ago when this book was first published, but I found it “better late than never.” A life changing book.
I truly enjoyed this enlightening book by Sue Monk Kidd. Told from her own perspective, it’s an honest and emotional look at a woman’s journey from crisis to awakening.
Fascinating story of a woman’s spiritual journey to find her feminine god-dess.
Sue M Kidd is one of my favorite authors. This book was so informative about our patriarchal culture and finding your feminine divinity.
Women as victims. Weary of privileged women bemoaning their state in life. Go to the middle-east and live in a burka for a while, then write a book. A Christian who decides that worshipping pagan female deities is preferrable? That’s a “no,” from me.
I was disappointed that this was just one short story. Would not have bought this ebook if I had known
Woman of all ages and religions should read this book.
I was disappointed in this book as it was not as I expected. I gave it two stars instead of one because I only read 1/4 of the book. It may have got better but just could not continue reading as I was not interested in her journey. However, her other books are two of my favorites.
It is our responsibility as mothers, to entrust this book to our daughters. In it’s refinement, the life door opens, bringing with it courage, anticipation and confidence to experience. The granting of permission to plunge, to leap, to dance in the rain is all we need to “live”.
It is a complex personal story of a seemingly unlikely awaking of a woman who would have described herself as a “good patriarchal daughter “. Insightful, informative and honest.
I should have read the description, I wasn’t planning to read a biographical account of religious feminist awakening.
This is an amazing story of a woman finding herself and her place in the world despite the confines of her church and her family. The author shows such courage by speaking out. I highly recommend it.
