From Attica Locke, a writer and producer of FOX’s Empire:
“The Cutting Season is a rare murder mystery with heft, a historical novel that thrills, a page-turner that makes you think. Attica Locke is a dazzling writer with a conscience.”—Dolen Perkins-Valdez, New York Times bestselling author of Wench
After her breathtaking debut novel, Black Water Rising, won acclaim from major publications and … novel, Black Water Rising, won acclaim from major publications and respected crime fiction masters like James Ellroy and George Pelecanos, Locke returns with The Cutting Season, a second novel easily as gripping and powerful as her first—a heart-pounding thriller that interweaves two murder mysteries, one on Belle Vie, a historic landmark in the middle of Lousiana’s Sugar Cane country, and one involving a slave gone missing more than one hundred years earlier. Black Water Rising was nominated for a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an Edgar® Award, and an NAACP Image Award, and was short-listed for the Orange Prize in the U.K.

I listened to the audiobook.
Very timely in reflecting the complicated tapestry of racism and immigration that still exists in this country. There are also threads of family, friendship, tradition, loyalty and when is it time to let go of something or someone. The plot moves along with some twists and turns to keep up the suspense. The ending is both bittersweet and uplifting.
I really enjoyed this book The setting was on an old Louisiana plantation, but at the current time period. There was murder, both past and present The main character lived on the plantation as a child, but came back as an adult to manage the tours and day to day operations. One if the murders happened to her distant grandfather who was a …
This is a complex mystery which tells another side of the impact of the Civil War on contemporary characters. It is filled with realistic historical information as well as realistic conflicts and racial intones which continue to affect its characters and their lives. It takes place on a sugar cane plantation in Louisiana which has been turned into …
One becomes enf grossed in the characters however, I felt there was more to the story. Perhaps delving into the history and finding the main character fights for her inheritance; were the remains identified; did her daughter’s father marry or were the two reunited? So much left unsaid.
Locke captured the Louisiana culture in that area perfectly.
He is a great writer and his mysteries keep you guessing.
A must-read for current times, The Cutting Season will bring you into a story but make you re-examine your world.
I like Cutting Season so much I went back and found this writer’s debut novel. It is a wonderful read that evokes a difficult transitional time in American history. Well done indeed!!
It was slow to start but then picked up. It made me sad and made me think about all the things that happen in that post civil war era. Hard to stomach.
I am a long-time resident of Houston, Texas, and find the history in Ms. Locke’s books fascinating. Thanks to her in several of her books, I am now aware of my City/County’s history. I assume (?) that many of her characters are either real of based on real characters. I am more than impressed with her research.
I bought this book because I read some of her other work several years ago and I was so impressed, I went to the Library and checked out one of her other books. Sadly, when I ordered this, I didn’t realize it was one I had already read….but what the heck? I read it again and it brings back a LOT of memories of my time in the south. You can …
Historically informative
A sugar cane plantation not far from New Orleans, restored to it’s original splendor and open for tours starting with a staged play featuring the old plantation owners and slaves in an historic rendition of pre-civil war life. A resplendent great house and stark slave quarters which can be booked for weddings and other events and a staff of both …
A combination of suspense and mystery with a setting that is unusual. A great mix of story lines capturing the spirit of the old South with modern day realities.
Great read!
This book takes you back into history. I loved the story. Definitely read this if you enjoy books about southern history
Great writing, love her books!
I recently did a plantation tour of the River Road in Louisiana and the fictional plantation reminded me very much of them. It was an easy read and very hard to put down. And although easy to read it provides thought provoking issues related to plantation history. Well written with good character development.
Kept my interest throughout. Loved the historical background since I live in Louisiana. Ending was a surprise and the book was really good.
