Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City to investigate a triple murder and confront a killer terrorizing couples at their happiest–and most vulnerable in this explosive New York Times bestseller. In the early hours of a quiet, weekend morning in Manhattan’s Diamond District, a brutal triple murder shocks the city. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs quickly take the case. Curiously, … take the case. Curiously, the killer has left behind a half-million dollars’ worth of gems at the murder scene, a jewelry store on 47th street. As more crimes follow, it becomes clear that the killer’s target is not gems, but engaged couples themselves.
The Promisor vows to take the lives of men and women during their most precious moments–midway through the purchase of an engagement ring, after a meeting with a wedding planner, trying on the perfect gown for a day that will never come. The Promisor arrives silently, armed with knife or gun, and a time of bliss is transformed, in an instant, to one of horror.
Soon the Promiser makes a dangerous mistake: leaving behind an innocent witness, Vimal Lahori, a talented young diamond cutter, who can help Rhyme and Sachs blow the lid off the case. They must track down Vimal before the killer can correct his fatal error. Then disaster strikes, threatening to tear apart the very fabric of the city–and providing the perfect cover for the killer to slip through the cracks.

The Cutting Edge (Lincoln Rhyme #14) by author Jeffrey Deaver is another fast-paced thriller featuring criminal consultants, Lincoln Rhymes and Amelia Sachs. In this book, the recent murders of engaged couples or the soon-to-be-brides may not be the underlying reason for the brutal killings and attempted murders. The serial killer, unsub 47 has been given the name of The Promisor because he seems to be targeting certain diamantaires and couples who have recently ordered or purchased specific diamonds for their engagement rings. One young woman is made to swallow her 5-carat diamond ring to avoid being murdered. So this proves the killer is not really interested in taking the diamonds. What is his motive for the brutality?
Vimal Lahori is a very talented apprentice diamond cutter who happened to see the first murdered couple as he entered the 47th street jewelry shop of his mentor, Mr. Jaten Patel. He discovers Mr. Patel is dead also, so Vimal flees the shop. He knows the killer will be looking for him for maybe more than one reason!
As I was reading the book I was worried Rhyme was making some uncharacteristic assumptions and mistakes. Amelia Sachs experiences a horrifying incident which does not stop her investigation of this case.
I won’t post spoilers, but there is more to the mystery than the diamonds. Also Lincoln accepts a challenging opportunity to look at the evidence of ‘El Halcon’ on trial for the paralyzing injuries of Barry Sales.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I love the Lincoln Rhyme series and while this one is still a good story, it’s not one of his best. Seems like there are more than the usual number of subplots and that keeps the tension and suspense from building up the way his novels usually do. It kept me entertained and interested but not on the edge of my seat.
Not up to Deaver’s usual intensity and page turning enjoyment.
Interesting story based on the subject. Lots of twists. Love it.
Perhaps Jeffrey Deaver’s best Lincoln Rhyme novel. Deaver is amazing in providing detail and is the master of crime fiction. Diamonds, spies, earthquakes, and complicated family relationships fill the story with twists and turns that will keep you reading till the very end.
Love the NYC locale and cultural authenticity of this Deaver classic. The guy can tell a friggin’ story.
I’ve read every one of Deaver’s Books and this one was different. It was like there were three or four books going on at once. It was a good plot and good characters but sometimes the story line seemed to go off off on another tangent. I had to follow closely to keep up with all of the characters and plots. The book was long but there wasn’t any useless filler. It was thought out as only Deaver can do. I can still see in my head the expressions and hear Lincoln’s voice from the movie roles, as well as Amelia’s. Overall I enjoyed the book I just had to focus more on each character especially towards the end.
Deaver’s pace keeps you breathlessly following the action in this fast moving thriller. It has fast turns and fast-paced action. Anyone who’s been waiting for the next Rhymes and Sachs novel should love it!
Almost everything you ever wanted to know about kitchen knives and perhaps a bit more
Interesting story, fast pace
I am actually listening to this book with Audible now. I only have 30 minutes left of the story and I am anxious to have the characters sorted out because I haven’t put it all together yet.
Just as you think the case has been solved, a new plot line pops up. Wonderful cast of characters developed over his series of Lincoln Rhyme books. Always looking for a new Deaver book.
Deaver always delivers and TheCutting Edge is no exception. Hard to put down. Something is always happening. The story takes place in the Diamond Industry world. An apprentice cutter falls into a complicated murder plot and thus ensues a chase for Rhyme & Amelia to find him before the killer does. Sub-plot makes his team question his decisions, but…..
If you are a fan of Jeffrey Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme, or nearly any Deaver book, you’ll love “Cutting Edge”. To the classic characters you love, and the scientific and forensic knowledge you learn, this new book adds interesting facts about the diamond trade and cutting of stones. In Deaver’s usual fast paced and twisting style, his villain eludes the police and Rhyme’s team….until he is caught. In classic Deaver style, he leaves the reader hanging at the end of a chapter, wondering how a central character saves herself from being buried by mud. WONDERFUL read!!
All my beloved characters back! I was so happy to find this new story! Dealers never disappoints!
Have read all of Deaver’s books and the characters never fail to grab one’s attention.
Excellent editing as well. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Great read
If you’ve read the rest of this series it follows the same path if you haven’t read the others you will really enjoy it
First off, I am a big fan of Jeffery Deaver and the whole crime scene investigation side of the story. So, of course I liked this book. As usual there are plot twists and near misses enough to keep you reading all night. And the characters very real and likeable, except for the killer. Deaver is a superb story-teller!
This is not your typical Lincoln Rhymes novel – the plot twists and turns will keep you turning pages all night!
