Aliens took over the Earth, and only small portion of the humanity could stay free. Is it better to be free and fight, hardly being able to stay alive, or serve the alien overlords and have a higher standard of living?
Jet is used to being in control, living as a refugee in an occupied ruined city. Her abduction is just the beginning of a spiral of deceit and lies and confusion that keeps her guessing. The Culling’ is the first installment in the Alien Apocalypse series, a dystopian saga for new adults. This story was pretty short and was a quick read. I finished it in one sitting.
I’d definitely recommend this especially to those looking for a New Adult title in the scifi genre. This first book in the Slave Girl Chronicles series is really more of a novella than a full length book. But 5 Stars!!!!
This is book one of the Alien Apocalypse series and the main character is Jet Tetsuo, a nineteen year old skag, one of the few humans still alive on earth, after it was invaded by creatures called Nirreth. People are constantly being taken away on alien ships, never to return, so nobody knows what happens to any of them. She lives in the ruins of Vancouver with her family, hiding underground from the culler ships and fighting off other human raiding groups. Earth had been destroyed by humans long before the Nirreth arrived and killed off large swathes of mankind. Most animals are extinct, the atmosphere has been ruined by pollution and radiation, and things like food and especially water are in short supply. It is a struggle to survive and Jet is on her way to make a trade for much needed supplies. She is in a part of town she is unfamiliar with and is above ground, which is far more dangerous. She is also alone, refusing to allow her best friend Anaze come with her. She is distracted thinking about her young brother Biggs, and him possible joining up with the rebels near the docks. A culler hovercraft is above her, almost before she even realises and she ends up captured and believes she will either be eaten or killed by these alien creatures, from the stories she was told growing up.
She is taken by a human captain called Richter, who she thought was the leader of the rebellion against the Nirreth, and his crew of Nirreth, to the infamous Green Zone, to be sold off to the highest bidder. Richter is holding out, to sell her to the Royal family as a personal guard for their children, as well as a fighter in the Rings! She has a sword made for her by an expert, that she calls Black, and has been taught how to use it. The Nirreth are too big and have a stinger on their tails, which can inject some sort of substance into her bloodstream, which allows them to control her easily. She tries to fight, but is quickly overwhelmed. She is now nothing more than a slave and a plaything for the Nirreth Royal family, given the role of protecting their eldest son, along with Richter’s right hand man or should I say Nirreth, Laksri. She is now in a more brutal environment, where refusal to do as ordered could mean her immediate death, but someone has specifically picked her for this role. She is now living in a world she had only ever seen in books or old movies, with no end of food, water, plants and even animals everywhere. The Nirreth are repairing parts of the planet, wanting to inhabit it for themselves, after the death of their own, but not all apparently are happy with the way the Royal family rules! Now Jet is being used as a pawn by humans and as a pet by aliens, where she still needs to fight for her very survival. Who the real enemy is, is not as clear as first thought and there is so much more to come for Jet. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
this is an exciting book. There is action going all through it. I liked the characters very much. It is post apocalyptic, alien invasion, and thrilling. I enjoyed the book very much and would recommend it.

The Culling: Alien Apocalypse Part #I
This has the makings of the start to really good series. I did struggle a bit to get engaged initially but a few chapters in & that changed. Jet, the female lead, is a tough young woman that’s grown entirely as a Skag. That’s what ‘free’ humans are known as since they were invaded & taken over by the Nirreth, an Alien race! They barely survive in underground cave systems trying to grow crops, all of the plants water is toxic, the air polluted & most of that happened before the Nirreth.
She is on a mission to try & trade goods when she’s culled. She’s shocked by what she then learns on the ship & in the Green Zone she’s taken to but especially by what she’s told by a friend!! Nothing can be taken at face value it seems. I’m intrigued to learn more & what other bombshells Jet will get dropped on her.

“The Culling” marks the star of the “Alien Apocalypse” series by J.C. Andrijeski, a NA dystopian sci-fi/fantasy series set in futuristic version of Earth in the brink of environmental breakdown. Jet Tetsuo (FMC) is an older teen trying to survive in the ruins of Vancouver, after the invasion of the Nirreth, an alien race of bipedal blue lizards, that use humans as pet, food, and entertainment. Before further continuing, let me point out again, this is sci-fi/fantasy, no hard-core trek, thus any criticism about “the science and purpose” of the plot is just out of place. This is sci-fi/fantasy at its best, a blend of post-apocalyptic dystopian Earth society and lizard-like alien invaders, to show day-to-day survival struggle into an environment that is both, familiar (because futuristic dystopian Earth and its inhabitants, are based on our own experience) and utterly ‘alien’, not only because the invaders are aliens, but precisely because they are ‘lizard-like’ and as foreign to our perspective as humanly possible. In this context, the following plot makes very much sense, it’s just a question of suspending scientific belief and immerse yourself into the action by asking “what if”… from them onward everything makes perfect sense. The Nirreth invade Earth, ‘nirrethforming’ it in the process, to increase the temperature of the planet to suit their needs, and they use the humans as they see fit, which also includes food and entertainment, they even keep some of them as pets, while let others fight in the Rings for mere amusement.
Jet Tetsuo has been hiding from the ‘culler’ ships, all her life, after all, everyone knows those who are culled would never return. Eventually, she gets caught and end up in the feared “Green Zone” only to realize that there is more about the aliens and their invasion than what meets the eye, and that danger comes in different forms and shapes, even human ones. Jet is a capable heroine, trained in sword-fight and also a teenager (even if already nineteen), who is still trying to make sense of her own existence in a world that doesn’t let any margin for error. But as this is also fantasy, Jet eventually manages to overcome the situation to fight another day, or more accurate in next book . While the beginning of the story can feel a little slow to develop, Jet is not exactly love at first sight, as Quentin or Dags (MC of two other Andrijeski series) are, but Jet evolves throughout the series, learning hard lessons in the process, and becoming a very interesting character in the process.
“The Culling” is a great introduction to post-Nirreth Vancouver (and any series set in any version of Canada is a plus in my book). The blend of human and lizard, in all ways and facets, is both alien (pun very much intended) and interesting, with the addition of T-Rexes as a logical twist, because if you were a blue lizard alien, you also would like to have your own T-Rex
As this is a NA aimed series, mature depictions are rather implied as shown, but some questions on dominance, consent, and power abuse arise, as usually do in sci-fi/fantasy, is part of the verse. And just be warned there is a cliff-ahead, but also three further books already waiting to be read
Jet is 19 and a skag – one of the free humans living on Earth after aliens called the Nirreth have invaded. She is one of the humans squatting in what is left of Vancouver in Canada where both Jet and her family are some of the many who eke out some kind of existence underground. It is common to hear or encounter so-called culler ships where they take people that they find and they never return. So when a culler finds Jet she is facing finding out the truth about the entire situation the hard way. Will she survive?
I really enjoyed this dystopian story and the world that the author has conjured up. Jet was definitely a woman with an attitude which she definitely needed as she encountered situation after situation that meant that she had to roll with the punches and think on her feet. I loved some of the descriptions of the locations, situations and her thoughts and emotions so that I felt that I knew exactly how she felt and what was happening to her. Well written and easy to read. I can’t wait to find out what happens next now!
Ok, quite frankly I’m not a big fan of apocalypse themed stories, but I’ve read and very much enjoyed other books by JC Andrijeski so I figured it was worth trying her new series as it’s on KU so was low risk. I’m really glad I did as this was fantastically addictive wonderful stuff. Now available in a single bookset, The Complete Alien Apocalypse Series (Parts I-IV Plus Bonus Novella), and I’d highly recommend that as, please trust me, you’ll not be able to stop until reaching the end. This crazy mashup “Apocalyptic, Romantic, Science Fiction, Alien Invasion Adventure” somehow works perfectly. I loved the plot line in each darn book, all of which flowed into a great story line filled with a perfectly crafted cast of lead and supporting characters, and all tied up with a bow of superb writing. Really fantastic stuff and I very much highly recommend each book and (for anyone coming to this fir the first time) the boxset.
I really enjoyed The Culling book– in fact, I wish it had been longer than a novella and I’ve added the next one to my wishlist so I can slide it in when I have an opening on my TBR. Good pacing, likable (and unlikable) characters, and an interesting plot. Keep me intrigued and hungry for the next book. Good job.
An engrossing tale that grabs you and doesn’t let go until you get to the last page. i was unable to go to bed until i finished the book and it left me wanting more.
