Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel’s suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today). After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his … a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry — known to her friends as the Cuckoo — famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.
Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.}]

I had to go through this book twice. I listened to it. English accent hard to get around. But it was a good story once I got into it.
Overall, a very sophomoric mystery novel. Author lacks the ability to do anything other than tell the reader what is going on. It’s all description.
Pure detective fun
I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
The book is huge but the story rolls through the pages with no let up in it’s intensity or grab factor at any point. The characters are well planned out and grow into the story as each page turns through every location in London.
Without giving any of the story up to rapturous praise I can only highly recommend …
It’d recommend everything this author writes because she weaves her storylines so well. The characters are flawed yet so like people we all know. The story moves so well I force myself to slow down reading so it doesn’t end so quickly. I am always so impressed with how well this author writes and am looking forward to reading more from her (um …
I never read the Harry Potter books, so I didn’t know what to expect from this book. I was disappointed in the ending. I had hoped it would be clever, but it was expected. The characters are damaged and at times self pitying. Though I never connected with Cormoran, I did like Robin and wished she’d had a bigger role. The book is entertaining, but …
Started watching on HBO. Loved it, bought the four books.
This one follows the show really closely, or the show follows the book?
Like the characters. Like the plot. Definitely not Harry Potter.
This delightful book is the first in the Coromandel Strike series. It has been a long time since I’ve found a series I can’t wait to get back to. If you love Gamache, Inspector Lynsey, Alex Delaware, Bosch then you will love this. It is masterful in the development of relationships. I won’t give spoilers but it is GOOD! I will just say that …
Robert Galbraith’s debut introduces the reader to an unbeatable detective team of two where each partner is equally important. Far from hero confusion, however, I relished each richly developed character as they pursue their separate lives as well as their joint investigation. J.K. Rowling (Galbraith’s alter ego) dazzles the reader with …
Excellent reading. NEVER get’s boring. NEVER has parts I just skip over.
Excellent book, if you’re not too skirmish. Grabs your attention and never let’s go!
It’s a fun easy come easy go type of series. Meaning easy to read, easily forgotten. The characters are great! Well written when you consider others in the genre, but I’d expect that from a master like J.K. Rowling. Overall I’d recommend the series on a cold winter’s night or a day at the beach.
Who knew “Robert Galbraith” could write such a good story? From Harry Potter to this. Really enjoyed reading this book. Forget about what she probably should have not said. This was a good book. The tension between the two main characters is playing out in about four books (?) so far. I enjoyed each of them and am looking forward to the next …
Love the characters in this series. The flawed detective with an interesting past is wonderful. Read them all.
Cormoran Strike is a PI who lost his leg in the Afghanistan war. He has demons that he often chases down with alcohol John Bristow shows up in his office wanting Strike to investigate the death of model Lula Landry, his adopted sister. Although Lulu’s death was ruled a suicide and Strike doubts there is anything to investigate he agrees. …
Within a case that was already ruled as a homicide, the story allows you to divulge into the main character’s (Comoran Strike) blinded search for a homicide. With a strong character driven plot and hidden clues throughout the book, you find yourself turning each page to figure out an ending you never seem coming. A great read!
Couldn’t finish this book I was so bored. Author tried to impress with more “educated” vocabulary after writing down to younger readers in the “Potter” series.
Original characters.
Fabulous…i couldn’t wait to read the next one
I enjoyed the e-book , but the audio version really ticks all my boxes–great accents and timbre for the interesting dialog. A solid mystery interspersed with relationship difficulties, new and old friends, and, of course, family. Love Strike’s gruffness and Robyn is a good sidekick. There is some rude language.
