Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel’s suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today). After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his … a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry — known to her friends as the Cuckoo — famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.
Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.}]

I’ve had this book on my reading list for a long time but kept putting it off. Robert Galbraith is also J.K. Rowling. I loved the Harry Potter books – what if I was disappointed with her new novels? Well, I’ve just closed the final page of The Cuckoo’s Calling, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. J.K. Rowling is a great storyteller.
The hero is a …
This was a highly anticipated book for me and I was not disappointed. I can understand and appreciate that J.K. Rowling wrote this book under a pen name, because it is so far from Harry Potter (which I love) and yet it also keeps you engaged throughout the novel. The characters are raw and a little twisted at times. The story is unique and gritty, …
The first two books in the Cormoran Strike series, The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm, are $2.99 on a bunch of retailers!
As you most likely know, Robert Galbraith is J.K. Rowling. I really enjoyed The Cuckoo’s Calling, but haven’t picked up the second book yet. I would definitely recommend the Cormoran Strike books to anyone looking for a …
I did not enjoy it at all. I thought it contrived and worked out who’d done it in the first chapter. However, I can see that she would appeal to her fans and therefore I can only express my findings and opinion.
I’m shocked by how many people haven’t given Robert Galbraith a shot. By now, most people know it’s J. K. Rowling under a pen name, and still, that move to pick up the book doesn’t happen.
Make it happen, is what I have to say. This series is so fantastic. If you want to see how mystery is done without scrimping on character building, here you …
Great story telling, and the description that could have been tedious were not. Good mystery, love the main character. Soon to be a TV series.
Started watching on HBO. Loved it, bought the four books.
This one follows the show really closely, or the show follows the book?
Like the characters. Like the plot. Definitely not Harry Potter.
I liked this…mostly. The murderer did seem a little bit obvious, but there were enough hints of other suspects that kept me intrigued. The main drawback is the length; I felt liked it could have been honed to a slightly tighter pace because Strike’s interviews to gain information got a bit tedious. Many of them seemed like the same questions and …
I recently did a binge read of the first four Cormoran Strike titles and loved them all. The Cuckoo’s Calling is the first in the series. The flawed, multilayered characters, the suspense, and the world Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) has created are addictive. I can’t wait for the next Cormoran Strike novel. Big thumbs up.
Smart storytelling! A great read for anyone who likes crime novels.
I put this book off for a long time for no other reason than I knew the author was really JK Rowling. It isn’t that I disliked her other stories, not in the least. In fact, I’m one of the few that’s never even read Harry Potter. I remember when people figured out this pen name and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Some loved it. Some hated it. And …
It was a good detective story. I wasn’t sure what to expect after the wonderful Harry Potter stories, but the author transitioned well. Definitely worth your time.
A wonderful story with a great mix of sleuths who fight in London’s underground crime arena.
This is a strong beginning for a series with lots of potential. Corm Strike is just the right amount of PI bravado and human vulnerability and the characters he surrounds himself with make reading this story more than easy. There is a great balance of mystery and story and though I had accidentally guessed the killer the first time they appeared …
love the sleuth and his assistant! Well done!
What can you say JK Rowling has found a new hero. This time an adult. Love the series.
Strike is an amazing character I LOVE these books (there are 3!). Great great proceedural with unforgettable characters wound around a great story
New author for me and loved this series and how the author writes. Read all three of the books and can’t wait for the 4th one. I recommend reading this series in order for a better read.
I particularly enjoy books set in England and this is no exception. Well written, great characters and intriguing storyline. I loved the whole series and hope to read more about Cormoran Strike soon.
I loved this book and have read the next two as well. Actually, I’ve listened to them on Audible and CD, and the narrations/performers only enhance the story. A new angle on crime solving and wonderful characters. As soon as I finish one I’m chomping at the bit for the next one.
