Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel’s suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today). After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his … a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry — known to her friends as the Cuckoo — famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.
Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.}]

too much profanity.
There were several instances where the pace was a little on the slow side, the investigation tedious. However it eventually picked up speed and became very entertaining. 3.5 stars seems a fair rating.
Love this author and the stories that surround this private investigator. A whole load of descriptive talent and complicated plot and well-developed characters.
AMAZING…love the Cormoran Strike series!!!
Great book series. Can’t wait for the 5th book to come out!
Loved the story and the writing style. Never heard of Robert Galbraith before. Loved it without knowing who really wrote it. Now that I do know it explains why I enjoyed it so much.
It was just okay. It did not hold my interest.
The Cuckoo’s Calling tells the story about the death of Lula Landry, one of England’s most famous supermodels. She fell from her high-rise loft in London and the police have ruled the death as a suicide. However, John Bristow, the deceased’s brother refuses to believe it was a suicide and hires private investigator Cormoran Strike to investigate …
Great mystery, intricate problem solving detective work
I can honestly say that the Cormoran Strike series, starting with this book of course, is my new favorite adult mystery series. JK Rowling does it again with superb character and world building. Just when I thought I knew where the mystery was heading and who was responsible, I was completely blindsided and had to grab the next book in the series …
Author Robert Galbraith did an amazing job creating unique and interesting characters. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was amazing. For those who might be sensitive to the F-word, this book might not be for you. However, I can’t imagine a couple of the characters speaking any differently. Their “F-talk” made them even more …
First book of this writer which I read ( I don’t count Harry Potter) and for sure not the last book I read of this writer.
A story which is well built.
Life isn’t easy on Strike and actually he can’t afford an secretary but he can’t say no to Robin.
But luckily he gets a case from Lula her brother. Lula has committed suicide, didn’t she?
Strike …
AWESOME! Have read everything in this series and they are fantastic!
Any liking whodunnit may like it-long back there was a board game called cluedo which I had sort of reminded of that
I want to be able to read the book before I buy it
Pretty good. Waiting for the bs series here in USA
Loved all the books in this series. Galbraith (Rowling) builds such rich characters as the mystery unfolds, and the ending is always a surprise.
Very good detective series.
This was a nice detective story that I felt didn’t follow the normal detective series. The characters are more believable and more realistic than the normal stories I’ve read. And I can never get the culprit! Maybe I’m just not good at it! I found this series very entertaining and couldn’t wait for the next in line to come out.
This is my second Cormoran read. (Read #2 first and then received #1, recently).
The characters are likable, especially Cormoran and Robin.
The murder is a good one.
How the murder is committed takes some thinking and plotting.
The murderer is not easily discovered by the reader and leaves the possibility of more than one suspect.
However, there …
